I found a graphic score this week that I really loved and thought it would go well with a reading from H P Lovecraft.
This time, the video diary follows the intro and the two pieces.

Love it! When I was a kid I remember getting my first cassette tape recorder. I used to walk around with it outside, late at night with the microphone pointed towards my back yard lawn, recording all sorts of unusual sounds. My family thought I was nuts and a waste since they thought I would use the tape recorder to improve my French. I used to listed to those sounds and imagine how they could be used in a movie of some sort. I recently bought a new recorder with the intention of recording the owls and night life I hear around my home at night (I have since forgotten how to speak French). let's hope my neighbors don't call the police on me. Very well done and very interesting. Cheers!!

Thank you very much! I remember my first cassette recorder too. I don't remember recording sounds from nature but I did write and perform some sketches that I can vaguely remember. I hope you enjoy recording sounds whether for a movie or just to enjoy for its own sake.

I'm so pleased that you've seen this and that you're a fellow Lovecraft fan. It's not the most accessible stuff, but really rewards effort. I don't know how many times I've heard this story in its entirety but after working on this part, I understand it better now.

Pea, you have SO got to get these to movie and game soundtrack agents. In all the years I’ve known you, you have turned your hand to so many things and totally ruled them all, but this has to be my favourite. Before your old friend dies, I want to see you collect a best soundtrack Oscar. ❤

I hope my old friend has a lot of life left in his old frettin' fingers yet. Even if I had the talent that you credit me with, I don't think that (as you do) I could do something creative at someone else's bidding. Someone else's brief, the pressure of a deadline and a blank sheet of paper? I'm enjoying this very much, probably because I'm not answerable to anyone else.

It kinda startled me when that first loud noise happened during the Anna from Barcelona part. 😂 I liked your hand motions during the Lovecraft reading. It was almost like you were acting it out. I think that's just a visceral involvement in what you're reading. It's great to watch. I liked the red scratches on your neck too. That was a nice detail. There's something so raw and truthful about spoken word. Seeing how you created the sound effects was a cool little easter egg.

Thanks so much for watching. I'm not really a believer in jumpscares, so that wasn't intentional, I just needed the clatter to be noticeable because it's brief but an important part of the score. I'm really glad you spotted the scratches. I did seriously think about doing the performance in a white nightie against a padded wall backdrop. I think that might have been too much but I still enjoy being a little bit theatrical. The hand movements just happen, that's not conscious at all but I think it really helps me to get the expression into the voice. I enjoy keeping the video diary too. Still wondering whether to split that out into a separate video.

@@midi_in For what its worth, I thought the flow was really good. I like going from the story to the performance to the process. I love the theatrics so voluntary or not, they add to the video.

I had to learn Gaelic when I stated to learn pibroch on the bagpipes. I'd say you did a pretty good job, it helps a great deal to have a few drams inside you. This was great Sheila, I was riveted all the way through.

Thanks for watching, I'm really glad you enjoyed it. I think I enjoyed making this one, possibly more than anything I've done before. I'm sure a dram would have helped! Shame I didn't think of that!

Have you considered Daphne Oram's 'Oramics'? She used graphic markings on moving celluloid strips, to be directly read by optical sensors - direct translation of graphics to sound.

I woudn't have heard of her, but my friend Mitch has built something along the same lines, I had a play with it last year. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nZ8-vmFa1Oo.html I've been experimenting with 'drawing' a waveform on a touch-screen and hearing the sound, but that's still a breadboard prototype.

@@midi_in She was a significant British electronic music pioneer. A few years ago the Science Museum had a reconstruction of her studio.
