Native fish aren’t boring. They just don’t look colorful most of the time. Keeping a fish you caught gives you almost a euphoric feeling because of the fact that you yourself caught it. And yes if you keep them as cichlids and feed them pellets everyday they would be as boring as a dull cichlids. But you have to do stuff with the,, like feeding them worms, and insects. And starting feeding frenzies. That’s where they shine the most. Not being fed pellets. Shrimp can be used for feeding frenzies, they don’t have to eat live food. And get longear and red breast if you want something colorful
Agreed but keeping native fish in most places is illegal… besides that I’ve done it and it’s wonderful. Stupid laws that make no sense.. government for you
Bluegills are really cute and get a lot of personality. Also they stay lighter and have more iridescence when they are not picked on. I got an unknown fry from a pet store once that turned into a bluegill. He knew who was going to feed him and seemed smarter than my other fish. He grew pretty fast in just a couple years. He went from a 10 to a 30 to a 55. We eventually put a kiddie pool in a guest bedroom and he was very happy. He ate lots of guppies and pellets and cubes and anything you wanted to slip him that you were eating. He was a good little fish, maybe the best of em.
Reading this was like watching an episode of Little House on the Prairie, only of the fish keeping world. Such amazing fish and their keepers. This young man in the video over crowds them in too small of a tank though, and doesn't provide them nearly enough plants to hide in 🙁
I have a pumpkinseed and a bluegill I caught when they were about 2”. These dudes are awesome and we’ve made friends. I’m thinking about teaching them to do tricks but idk how that’s gonna go yet. They’re really active and pretty smart. One will gather pieces of worms and horde them in his nest lmao. He saves them for when I go to bed before he eats them.
@@ribeyerare8971I want a redbreast sunfish as a pet. Anything I need to know about keeping. Like number of fish, size of tank, feeding (can they eat worms, I have a worm farm)
Bro that was AWESOME. How you spoke the truth to “power”..... you just helped many people with you opening up about your drinking and being honest about that,,, just as you’ve helped many in the industry better their aquariums ! Peace and great fortune to you!
Hey Chris: Life has it’s ebb and flow just like aquariums. Glad to hear you are doing better. Most don’t know it, but all of us could benefit from some head shrinking from time to time. I have a 55 with three bluegill raised from fry. Its not my favorite tank, but I still really enjoy it. It’s decorated with an old rod and reel, beer bottle, coke can, and a boat propeller. These guys are super aggressive and have a lot of personality. Robert in San Francisco
I keep a large tank with a green sunfish, rock bass, and black crappie. If you don't care for bluegill, a green sunfish is surprisingly entertaining and tame up easily if wild caught. It's by far the most 'friendly' of the three. I kept a largemouth bass before that. It was the most engaging fish I've ever had. It remember things, recognized people, and tamed up well to the point that I could pet him in the tank. Downside was food demands and aggression. Could not keep anything else in the tank without it being eaten or bullied to death. But I think a green sunfish is a nice all-around 'starter' fish if you want to keep native. They're very colorful, tame easy, and easy to care for.
Not boring...your blue gill isn't happy. It is dark and unhappy. When they are happy their colors come out. Just like any fish. I have two and omg awesome!! So much personality! Don't get me started on the tricks for food lol! Just the best! They are like two puppies! I will take yours lol!
I have kept all sorts of tropical fresh and saltwater fish in my day. I currently run a 125 planted native with a couple bluegill and 3 longear sunfish. Its my favorite tank Ive ever had. I tried to make it look like a natural lake bottom. I love it but it's all subjective.
My favourite fish in my over 100+ fish collection of tropical fish and rare plecos; My single sunfish that I caught in a pond and raised is my FAVOURITE! He’s the puppy I never had 🤣 if he’s hungry in the middle of the night he’ll lift his lid until I feed him. If I forget to close the lid he’ll spit at the top and won’t dare jump out all though he very well could. He even flashes sand at me when I feed him too much spirulina and not enough protein like a child afraid of medicine. 13 tanks and I honestly think about one of them more than the rest! 🐠
Just found out about your channel today and because of you I'm wanting to get back into keeping fish again thank you for sharing your knowledge in your content on fish keeping😊
Our green sunfish are freaking immortal! We had a huge freeze about a week ago and we have an outdoor trough pond with sunfish in it,it froze almost completely, but after it thawed out,the fish were still in there as if nothing happened, all these fancy chiclids and Oscar’s would’ve been frozen over, not the sunfish.
From my experience fishing for these little guys, I know they can be voracious eaters. I never kept any in an aquarium, but when I've chummed the water while fishing they will swarm around and even break the surface of the water. I wanted to see how close they'd come to the shore, so I placed raw chicken in the water right next to the bank. The bluegills would swim up so close I could see their dorsal fins and eyes poking out of the water. They practically Beached themselves. They are definitely fun little creatures.
Recovery comes first! Self care!! Also, I just caught a tiny bluegill and added it to my 40 gallon hex tank. I feel like some have very vibrant colors on them, at least the ones in Illinois/Wisconsin that I’ve seen.
A few years back I was pretty much micro fishing in this little stream by my house lol and I caught some of the most beautiful sunfish I’ve ever seen imo they even blew that jaguar cichlid out the water they where so vibrant it was unreal the green was so bright and the orange was bright orange and the blue was really teal colored I wish I still had a picture cause no one believes me when I tell them these fish were just that pretty
I’ve got a 2000 gallon backyard pond with a half dozen bluegill. If you’re around the pnw I’ll take the lil bastard! They’re pretty interactive. Mine have let me touch them and will take worms from my hands.
Personally, I love not only cichlids, but also sunfishes, gouramis, and catfishes. I think they’re all really cool, with fascinating colors, patterns, behaviors, and personalities. On the sunfish end, I’ve kept bluegill, spotted sunfish, and green sunfish. They were all so cool, especially the green sunfish! Greenies are aggressive, territorial, and predatory, and they make great aquarium fish. Behaviorally they are a lot like the cichlids of Central America and West Africa, eg - like Jack Dempsey and Salvini, or like jewel fish and five star generals, respectively. An interesting difference is that when it comes to spawning and digging, cichlids use their mouths to move gravel, while sunfishes use their tails to sweep it away. I’ve never kept long ear sunfish, but from what I’ve seen they’re some of the most beautiful aquarium fish in the world, and every bit as interesting in their behaviors as cichlids. That’s why I’m a fan of both families. Don’t knock ‘em till you really try ‘em!
If you have ever seen longear sunfish, they can be awesome looking... not sure how many could go in a 75 gallon, maybe 3, but they are a beautiful sunfish species. 🤙🦀🌴
Hey Palmer it's been a while. I moved a while back and have no tanks up at the moment. The pond behind my house is full of warmouth and was thinking of setting a tank up for one
Green sunfish are my favorite. Very aggressive and will eat almost anything. They look like a bluegill and largemouth hybrid. They can also live in the worst aquatic conditions so they won’t die if you neglect your tank.
If you want sunfish to be more colorful, you must get them as they're young and load up on the beta carotene. To trigger those awesome colors you see everywhere, you'll need to trigger breeding condition in the male.

Do people keep northern North American fish in other parts of the world like we keep their fish
@@michaeldougherty6532 You've never seen Nebraska blue gills and sun fish. Irridescent blue line all over with greens and oranges and blues. This guys blue gill is ugly as sin.
Actually yes, mainly longnose gars and certain sunfish species, many countries have outlawed them because they have the potential for being very invasive since they can thrive in many different temperatures and water qualities and actually have become a problem in some European countries because of people letting them go when tired of them or can just no longer keep them for some reason.
The bluegill would be extremely vibrant and colorful if he wasnt bullied. I have a bluegill, green sunfish, and a rock bass. They all have insane colors. All about having the right tank mates. They really shine when you feed them
The ones we have around here I'm in Arizona they are greenish with stripes. The ones I have caught were bigger about one pound they grow fast probably get eaten by largemouth bass or catfish.
It's because the goldfish was too big to actually swallow, as in make it to the pharynx. It likely tried it a few times when you werent looking, then gave up and just tolerates the goldfish now.
Don’t know where you live but I have a blue Gill in my gar tank and he’s caught from a stream near me in the northeast absolutely beautiful colors not bland at all
Hello friend I so enjot your videos I have learned so much from you.I know what it's like to get down sometimes.I wish the best for you You are always non my mind and in my heart Take care I love you
i like them a lot they are an amazing predator... hit prey off top water hard just like bass and other fish do... thats why i like them. They eat other fish just not as often. So if u like to see a fish showing its wild side...i think they are great and very similar to bass which im obsessed with.
I wanna see more renovation honestly. I know you need a break bro but im in the middle of a remodel myself and i love watching your stuff come together.
Chris can you please do a video on keeping Central and South Americans together? There are barely any videos out there on this topic. You would know better than anyone else.
I too keep central american cichlids, like for 8-9 years but sunfishes (notably the longears, pumpkinseeds, redbreasts) are a lot more beautiful and feasable to keep in a standard home aquaria where an average fishkeeper would be having not more than a 75G, than the species from the parachromis genus (mainly the dovii and the managuensis) that needs a 125G+ at the very least.
Idk why but Oscar is very aggressive only at night time to my green terror. It’s strange but only at night if I turn on the lamp. If it’s dark and I turn on the living room lamp he will start to attack him. But during the day they ignore each other. So I just throw towels over the tank so no light gets in and they just sleep.
Nice video :D. Any stocking options for a 38 gallon. I thinked of three options, betta with other fish or 1 bloodparrot. The tank is 90 cm long, 32 cm wide and 52 cm tall.
I think you set up this fish to fail. I can’t believe you’re keeping it in with those other fish when it’s so stressed out. Please move him to where he doesn’t end up dead.
Have you ever bread pike cichlids ive been hunting for good information on it but was unable to find any and just got 5 crenicichla .sp ventuari from my lfs and wanted to see if you had any experience keeping them as i found some info conflicting and your Chanel is a good place to find solid info on most south and central American cichlids
I think putting them with aggressive amazon species isn't very wise. Also I wouldn't heat the tank. Long eared and pumpkin seed sunfish are great. You seem to have a penchant for aggressive species. I would put sunfish in the medium category. Like a severum.
I'm not a fan of people taking Bluegill, Bass, or whatever out of their natural environment and sticking them in a glass box. My honest opinion. Sorry about all your crappy circumstances lately, but glad things are getting better.
Hi man.Can you please do an episode of monster fish fight series incl. Aba knife fish which is ferocious monster and somehow remained not mentioned?Regards.
