Jeremy, another great SunJoe dethatcher video! I purchased one of these 2 years ago after watching your previous video and the Ginja's comparison video with the SunJoe and another manufacturer. Thanks to both of you for your advice in the videos. I have 19,000sqft of lawn divided up into approximately five 3,800sqft sections and this dethatcher/scarifier has performed flawlessly. (Of course you also need to purchase the proper length and gauge extension cord to protect the motor from burning out.) I'll work on a section at a time for several weekends in a row and the lawn looks terrific. I highly recommend this product!

@TheGreenerLawn 3 года назад
I will agree, 1/2” or less is normal and healthy. But, the stress is easy to recover from and If you take the thatch early in the season (even the good layer) as the lawn wakes up, it will breathe a lot better, green up quicker and build a healthy layer back before the heat of the summer. Kinda...... if you are seeding, yes, it will give you great seed to solid contact to use the scarifier and allow the seed a nice tilled medium. If you're using it to help with compaction, no it will not replace the aerator. As it doesn't get deep enough.

Question: If I have some raised roots in the lawn, will they destroy the tines? I would do my best to avoid them, obviously, but there are spots I can’t necessarily tell the root is just below the surface. Managed to pick one up late summer last year when it was back in stock, but didn’t end up having an opportunity to use it. Planning to hit up the lawn in the next couple weeks.
@TheGreenerLawn
@TheGreenerLawn 3 года назад
Dethatcher will miss subsurface roots, the Scarifier could hit them but I would imagine it would “kick” the machine as its super light, causing no or minimal damage. I know people who use skill saws and cut out the surface roots (not me, I don’t have any). It is a pretty resilient machine for as “cheap” as it is.

So, lol coming in hot with an acre plot (sooo close), here is how people do it. Generator: do as far as your cord will reach and move. For me on the 13” model; I go 5000 sqft in 15 min… not ideal but you could break it into chunks, and make it work. After the first time, you will just have to pay attention to thatch and spot hit. Two: Rent a large machine doe the first hit, then go with spot hits from then on out for continued use of the sunjoe. 3: Use a dethatch queued product in the summer months to break it down naturally (not quick, but it works over time). 4: purchase a couple machines, this makes the time go quick. I have two for my 8k and we knock it out quickly. 5: pay your kiddos to do it 😅

What’s the difference between dethatcher vs aerator?
@TheGreenerLawn
@TheGreenerLawn 3 года назад
Good question: Areation, is the process of poking holes in the ground, to allow water and nutrients in, allow more root growth and helps with compaction. Dethatching: the removal of abundant thatch layer ( more then 1/2”)to allow the grass and soil to breath, get airflow and allow nutrients, and water to reach the soil. Both obviously serve different purposes, but the areation can be a bit of a crossover as it lets nutrients and air in as well, but not all over like the Dethatching. Make sense?

What time of the year to sdetacher your lawn
@TheGreenerLawn
@TheGreenerLawn 3 года назад
Couple schools of thought here. Spring, so your lawn can breathe during the summer. Summer, if the thatch is outta control, and you need immediate help (this will super stress the lawn, but doing nothing and it suffocating will kill it) Fall: during an over seeding. It opens up the soil, to make it so you get good Seed to soil contact with your over seeding. More questions, let me clarify!

No, not exactly. If your trying to cure compaction issues of soil, areation machines will assist with this as they poke a 2-4” hole removing soil and alleviating tension of the soil. Scarifying will break up the top 1/4” of the soil, removing excess roots, but not a compaction solution.
