INGREDIENTS used in this video:
• Fluke 381 remote clamp meter (999.9A DC / 2500A AC): goo.gl/ef73GX
• Sunkko 709AD spot welder (better) select 110v or 220v: goo.gl/nDpGqD
• Sunkoo 787A+ spot welder (cheaper) select 110v or 220v: goo.gl/MozkZc
• Pen for Sunkko Welder HB-70B: goo.gl/UKCwXA
• 18650 cell holder: goo.gl/EUC7sH
• 18650 paper washer ring insulator: goo.gl/HFWm3A
• Heat resistant polyamide Kapton tape: goo.gl/qdTfHb
This is a comparison between two very popular eBay / Aliexpress spot welder models, Sunkko 787A+ (cheaper entry level) and the 709AD (more powerful) which is also very similar to the 709A (fanless) and 709AD+ models.
The video starts with a tutorial / introduction to battery spot welding, showing some settings and how to avoid problems. Talked about the different nickel tabs and how to detect if is fake nickel (steel core nickel plated tab), differences in nickel tab design (single strip vs stamped nickel tape).
Peter and I pulled the welders apart to inspect & compare inside and measure the inrush current with my Fluke 381 clamp meter. We were able to see how much surge current both welders pull from the mains and after the transformer (welding current). You will be surprised how much current these little welders are pumping, worth watching!!

Who is Peter?
Peter started recycling laptop cells 2 years ago after watching Jehugarcia making batteries for his Electric VW Kombi on his RU-vid channel. Peter loved the idea so much that he decided to scale it up and put his own twist connecting these homemade recycled batteries to his existing solar system instead. Peter started his project calling it "Homebrew powerwall" which was a budget / homemade version of the Tesla Powerwall.
Today Peter has a massive 60kWh battery bank that is much much bigger than the original Tesla Powerwall with 6720 recycled laptop cells, tested one by one and selected meeting his minimum capacity requirements.
Peter's videos ended up inspiring thousands of people all over the world what inspired him to create www.diypowerwalls.com forum and DIY POWERWALLS group on Facebook where his followers could share their own projects and inspire even more people out there!!

Just an idea for you, because the lower amp unit has such loose connectors a lot of the current may not be transferred down the cable. maybe not making a good circuit. You could test it using the direct contact points and may get different results.
@BrunoPOWEEER
@BrunoPOWEEER 6 лет назад
Yeah, if I ditch the long extension (pen) and just use the little welding head that comes with the 787 it should improve the performance, but still, there's a massive difference in performance and settings/controls. Also I know so many people who bought the cheap models like 787 or 788H and they either failed or didn't do a good job. Then they bought the 709A or 709AD and are suuuuper happy, completely different machines. I still want to do more tests maybe using my scope and understand exactly why both models are so different.

Hi, buddy, the current value of the clamp meter is not exact, this is a delay value (the peak current only lasts 5 ms). When you weld, the peak of the current can approach to 800 amp.

I'm starting to play around with this stuff and in the process of trying to make something I can use for a small pack with a 12VDC car battery as a source controlling the pulse with an Arduino and a relay. The information and data you provide here is truly wonderful. Thanks so much ! We can get batteries that range between the two current extremes you measured. Also your explanation of current flow effects with Cu v Ni was very useful to me as I've been wondering about why Cu isn't used. However, if one wanted to solder and could manage to tin case surfaces without too much heat transfer, maybe solar bus ribbon (dead soft Cu solder coated) could be viable with low enough energy. All I can find in small quantities is Ni plated Fe (Ni 40% higher in DC conductivity than Fe), so we'll see how that goes. I've done some research on the internet, but your video has given me new data and ideas. One caution -- the maximum recommended daily dose of caffeine is only 400 mg. I myself consume 600 mg every morning, but it has been estimated that for the average weight male, 5,000 gm would be on the verge of lethal -- kind of the human equivalent of burning a big hole in the anode cap of am 18650: It could ruin your day. Just sayin'.... :D

One very important factor for welders is the way the cables connect to the welder. If there is a high resistance connection you can easily lose half of your power.

The (pen) tips on my 709A have worn out. Can't see any way of changing them. They do provide new tips but they're for the welder itself, not the pen and a new pen on the bay of E's is a moronic price ! Do I risk buying one of those "el cheapo" versions ?
@BrunoPOWEEER

Yeah I know what you’re saying... maybe just make your own tips, they’re just copper and copper is soft and easy to shape. Buying anything will take weeks or over a month to arrive. Maybe take to any local metal fabrication or engineering or electrical shop and ask them for help they may have something there that perfectly fits your pen

The AD+ has an automatic function that senses when you touched the nickel and weld after one second, so you don’t have to use the pedal. May be handy for some people, I think I’m old school cause I still like the pedal... it all depends on the person

@BrunoPOWEEER
@BrunoPOWEEER 6 лет назад
The 709AD has an additional temperature sensor that makes the fan only turn on above a set temperature. You could get a 110v or 220v regular fan and just hook up directly to the AC power cable inside the welder and put a latching on/off switch somewhere (ideally use the front panel ON/OFF switch) so when you turn the welder on the fan is always on =]

Good vid guys, thanks for the share. Q,1, I wonder if you did just get a dodgy unit, or if all the 787s will give similar poor comparitable output specs. 2. The loose connections, perhaps firm them up somehow for better current transfer, and recheck output. One comment/criticism is that I notice so many YT's only showing volts or amps in their experiments, not both, ultimately at the same time, so as to be able to make a more accurate, definable and repeatable conclusion of results. As you know, so many things can be happening in an electrical circuit at the same time that a small change in resistance of a part such as your connections or a contactors or relays points having a small imperfection, burn, point, dag, dry joint, etc, + loose connections could possibly yield big changes and unstable or inconsistent readings also, and this is why I like to take both measurements simultaneously where I can (volt and amps) to verify my findings with another factor, power or watts total and this may help to diagnose some of the issues here. Also, I guess the timing of the burst is critical in how long it sustains the blast of current in whatever time variable to do the job in a specified amount of time using 'x' amount of joules or energy to do the task. I'm certainly no expert, just a bit ADHD with this stuff at times and would like to see a few more experimenters using both volts and amps to help make a more educated result or finding. Thanks for your vid, it was very informative as I have looked at these units myself and gives me more things to consider if I should buy one. Keep them coming!

Thanks for your very constructive comment, I like when I get helpful comments like that =] I made this video while I was traveling to a different state and I quickly stopped at Peter’s house just to say “hi”. I didn’t have any other specialised gear but my Fluke with inrush function. I didn’t have any portable oscilloscope with me (I only have bench ones) we tried to use his multimeter to measure the voltage but the pulse is just too fast so all we could use was the Fluke clamp meter. It wasn’t a scientific test or anything but a good exercise to compare and understand why the more expensive model welder was so superior + we had some fun opening and checking inside both welders =] Here is a video showing my workshop with all my oscilloscopes and a proper professional/industrial production spot welder, you’ll have fun watching, it’s a proper battery building workshop for electric vehicles ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pbg--F-43K8.html

Trying to decide getting a 220v spot welder and install a plug to run off of my stove's 220v outlet (live in apt), or try a 110v version of spot welder and risk tripping my breakers. I have several 110v 20 amp breakers and a set of 2 40 amp breakers for the stove. Some of the 110v welders say they need 30 to 60 amp power source to operate while others say they only draw 15 amps, very difficult to decide which route to take.
@BrunoPOWEEER
@BrunoPOWEEER 5 лет назад
Definitely go 220v, I never heard about anyone having breakers dropping in 110 or 220v but EVERYONE who owns 110v complains that the welder is rubbish... then they return their 110 and swap for the 220v and they go like WOOWWWW the difference in welding is so ridiculous. Don’t waste time and money (and bad welds) trying the 110v version... if you google you’ll find many people (mostly Americans) describing their frustrations and always end up swapping to 220v.

It’s likely they operate at very similar voltage. These tests were just vari basic comparison not using proper scientific tools. We didn’t have advanced tools at Peter’s workshop, I do have in my workshop but I don’t have the welders. It’s just weird these two welders perform so differently in real life!

Your running your units on 220 current. Here in America we have 120 volt of the same model and they barley weld the the tabs to the battery. Here in the U.S. the curent is about half that you have to run these welders and most need to be modified with twice as many HV windings.

Looking for 3s and 7s bms to put between a UPS and batteries! Any recommendations?
@BrunoPOWEEER
@BrunoPOWEEER 6 лет назад
Ohhh it all depends on your amperage/current levels and cell capacity. Too small and the BMS will get too hot or not be able to balance the series at all. I work for www.batrium.com we do make 7s and up to 400v or higher... check it out. For UPS you may be better using LiFePo4 chemistry which replaces Lead Acid batteries to the exact same voltage whereas Lithium has a different voltage and can be a problem in some cases.

The Unit Pack Power are an “okay” “battery factory” (factory = they just assemble things together). There are endless problems with the Hailong cases, they’re HORRIBLE and start falling apart, cracking everything everywhere, drop from the bike and crash on the road. Lots of ebike sellers refuse to work with Hailong cause all the warranty problems. Reention battery case is a much better option in every single way (plastic, connectors, mount/base, locking mechanism, weight distribution, easier to install). Go Reention instead of Hailong

I own the cheap one. The other day I made a discovery. The knob for turning up the charging current also turns up the welding current. I discovered this by blowing a hole in a battery. I don't know whether I have a faulty one, or it's meant to be that way but I am taking advantage of it to get higher currents in the pen. (When I finally get round to making the pack)

@@GreenMountainDIYGuy I saw an American buy a 220v one and get better results. I guess for a given wattage if you use 110 on an appliance that needs 220 that a) you won't over-volt it, and b) you'll draw twice the current. VI= W, ignoring power factor for simplicity. I can see how a 220v one might work better in America. I wonder if I use a 220-110 trafo if my 220v welder will work better. I think I can lay my hands on one.

Hahahaaa yeaaaaahh man... thanks for watching the madness!! Sunkko 709Ad or Ad+ are both good, the only difference is that the + model can be used without the pedal, sensing when the probes touch the nickel and automatically fire the welder, some people love some people only like the pedal. Most importantly, these welders are only good in 220/240volts, the 110/120volts are rubbish and people always return then and get the 220v version
@JamiePineappleWyatt
@JamiePineappleWyatt 4 года назад
BrunoPOWEEER I ended up getting a 709AD, I didn’t want to have the auto welding, too likely to make a poor weld in my opinion, I like the peddle :) Wouldn’t mind cutting the cables off the probes though, they’re pretty 👎🏻 swap them out with some good silicone wire instead. I will also say, make sure the seller knows which plug to put on the end, they sent me a European plug and it drove me mental 🤣 I’ll be putting double gauge wires for the plug too, it gets a lot of voltage drop over those tiny ones from the factory ;) I only have 240v here in Aus so it’s a non issue, we Aussies like volts and the only time I’d bother with 110v is if I was doing solar and even then I’d still prefer 240v ✌️ Always man, I love keeping up with your content, it’s really entertaining and I always walk away knowing something I didn’t before ✌🏻

Whats the differnce between 709a 709ad and 709ad+
@BrunoPOWEEER
@BrunoPOWEEER 6 лет назад
Great question mate... 709a is the basic mode but good 709ad has an internal fan for cooling the big transformer (very important when welding battery packs, things get hot after a few minutes of use) 709ad+ looks a bit different but is the 709ad with automatic trigger function, rather than use a foot pedal it welds a second after you touch the probes on the nickel. Personally, I like to have a control on the pedal.

@@BrunoPOWEEER 😃😃😃😃 Bruno I wanted to order 709AD but ended up ordering 709AD+. If I had watched this video before making the order, I won't have sacrifice about 60 USD difference for just an auto weld 😃😃😃😃😃. I thought their are other differences.

@@BrunoPOWEEER Living once is boring, there is no reason to think your life ends, what purpose has that, have fun and be optimistic that you can have another go when it sags too far past your knob :-) I like giant boomboxes. 0.09 mm ?? YOU MEAN 0.9 MM
@BrunoPOWEEER
@BrunoPOWEEER 6 лет назад
Noooo... 0.9mm is way too thick to spot weld to an 18650 cell, it requires so much energy that it damages the cell body and too much heat may damage internally. I normally use 0.17mm and 0.2mm for most builds, the maximum I heard one guy testing was 0.35mm but it requires a lot of energy/heat. Watch my latest video showing the professional industrial pneumatic spot welder at 6 minutes ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pbg--F-43K8.html
