Al Caponey New guys fresh out of Basic Training or "Boot camp" hence the name Boot. It's like that for every branch. *Cough Coast Guard isn't a branch Cough* P. S We still love you guys lmao
oh wow, I clicked on this waiting to see a confrontation. But all I see is my tax dollars at work and a law abiding citizen being courteous. Respect flowing both ways. Amazing, God bless!
@@Myemnhk I'm betting half those people, have never taken a boating safety course, and don't know the rules and regulations, long before you put a boat in the water
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Back in the day, the normal boat crew was 3. When LE is the plan of the day, 4 or more. If you think about it, 1 boat driver, another to stay on the boat and "observe" and provide a backup. 2 to board you where one watches the boaters while the other goes over the paperwork and/or searches the vessel. In your case, it appears they acted as "fenders" LOL. Can't have too many fenders.
I think it's a pain in the ass. They sit at the mouth of the channel where I'm at. Also if you anchor a lot like me then they will come over and inspect you.
I dont know why people give coast guard such a hard time, they do THEIR job to keep us SAFE, and, their MILITARY, keeping the country safe, most people that give them hell, have not served for the country and have no respect for them
@@avasdad3029 Up till 1979, they didn't carry guns on boardings. But remember what is todays Coast Guard's first mission was when it was founded in 1790? Law Enforcement. The Life Saving service, Light House service, etc showed up later on.
@Nick Fletcher. your an idiot and ignorant. Use that propaganda to control people. I dont need the coast guard to bored or searching my boat without getting a warrant. Just want to have the laws of the ocean updated.
For those complaining about CG checks, they did one on me when I first got my inflatable pontoon boat. On the ramp the first time i went to put it in the water. They said I needed a whistle or other audible distress signal. OK, got one from my backpacking gear in the car and was good to go. Thanked them for their concern. Three hours later, with a crab pot over the side (and in use as an anchor) and a crab ring over the other side, a 42 ft sail made a turn about 100 feet from me. And headed directly towards me.... with no forward watch or anyone looking. I was yelling (as were several other people in small boats crabbing around me), one guy was blowing his air horn... And their was no way I was getting the pot and ring trap up to get out of the way. I guess the idiots heard my whistle and they looked up just in time to cut away. His bow pushed my stern under as he went by. It knocked the sonar unit, both oars, two fishing rods, and the motor over board. But that whistle was what he heard. Thank you CG for reminding me to have one. Five minute safety check? MAY have saved my life. (PS, thank you to REAL boaters and fishermen who dropped everything they were doing to help me get my boat back in order and back to the launch. Also thank you to the CG who responded to the accident. I guess they have the authority to remove an operator's license and they got his right away. And someone in a very nice Boston Whaler pulled my boat up onto his and put me on the boat ramp. Real people doing what they have to to help out. And that is the way we all should be out on the water).
nope, freedom can not be allowed IF you want everybody and everything to be safe. Freedom carries risk, but guaranteed safety carries a much greater risk (Lack of freedom)
There are completely lawless places in the world, so you could have your freedom if you moved to one of them. You'd also have a shitty life. But hey, as long as you're "free", right.
Some kind words and being nice will always win. Great video I`ll see a video with some very unsavory people and things will go south really quick. Be safe and happy fishing.
Love the Coast Guard I wish they were out more often. I work on an Inspected tow vessel and have been boarded a few times and had a good experience and they often do more educating to the crew than inspecting the vessel for subchapter M compliance
John: Thanks for posting this video. It is reminder to all of us to double check our safety gear before we go out on the water. I have no problem with the Coast Guard as they are trying to ensure our safety. If we get into an emergency we need the stuff they are checking to ensure we have!
You believe the safety BS? Really...are you that naive? You are a grown adult...you are responsible for your own safety. This nanny state mentality is destroying this great country that was founded upon independence and self sufficiency. They are trying to 1. revenue generate 2. look for drugs and other illegal activity. 3. control people's movements 4. safety..if and only if it is self serving for the coast guard . Pull you head out of your a**
Well, Jimmyjack, if you are not equipped to handle an emergency you are a hazard to everyone on the water; including the Coast Guard. I had this shit squared away by the time I was 6, have been boarded more times than I can count, and have never had a negative experience with the Coast Guard or water patrol. I have also conducted two rescues on my own because I was first on the scene. And? I have never tossed myself or a passenger in the water because safety was drilled into me before I was allowed to set foot on Dad's vessel. Heck! Even when I go to a fishing dock on a local lake the first thing I do is try to track down a throwable life ring and I carry 50 feet of rope in my pack along with a first aid kit and flares. I have used the first aid kit for a few minor injuries but I haven't needed either of the others but I did haul one kid out of the water after he went over the rail. Maybe, if his mother had spent a little quality time with the U.S.C.G. she would have pulled her boy out herself instead of standing there and screaming? Cheers!
I have a 12 ft folding boat, and I got a summons for not having a fire extinguisher on my boat. I also needed a flag and they even checked the dates on my flares to see if they were expired. I think they let you slide because they knew you from your videos.
I think they were hard on you! I've googled and believe that < 26 feet without a fixed gas tank or enclosed area the fire extinguisher is not required. West Marine has a nice section on requirements that was updated last month. If anyone knows different, please share!
Flares are only good for 3 1/2years from when they're made (not from date when you buy them), which is why they check them. Most people probably don't realize their flares are expired.
Andrew Saliba - Yep! It all depends on their mood and vibe they get from you... they will do everything from reading the tags on life preservers to ensure USCG type rating, to check flare markings for USCG approval and expiration, to checking the pressure levels and dates on fire extinguisher, etc. They can get super picky if they want to.
That is the problem, they need to be consistent and professional. When they let one person slide and come down on another regardless of the attitude of either they are wrong. Government should never use their power to humiliate a person. Getting even is never professional.
Because they know you, they're probably giving rookies a training session. In other cases, however, they'll often investigate fishing boats because some have 'connections' that allow smugglers to avoid making landfall.
John, if I were you I'd get a 10# fire extinguisher just to have it. I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I'd hate to see that classic boat go up in flames.
Great video. Always glad to see the Coast Guard even if they are inspecting my boat. They will go through hell to try to help you if you need it. Thank you Coastie’s, you guys rock.
The point for older adults is that this just would never happen for no reason. There were very few park police or Coast Guard even around in the 60's to be on patrol. These were open areas free for recreation and free from interference. The vast majority of us were responsible boaters and campers and considered innocent until proven guilty. Just not used to being "checked up on." These things were done at the boat ramp. Great respect for new park police and CG, but they were much more in the background and had other duties. A shift in society that's hard to explain to a suspicious mind. I kept safety and all other necessary equipment because it could save our lives.
cr4zyj4ck This comment is ignorant because the other branches aren’t meant to provide “service to the citizens of the country”. How do you think the Air Force is supposed to help citizens, they’re part is to go out and protect or attack. Not aid citizens.
land of the free.i just got my boat registered in texas.title boat motor and hull and trailer. it cost so much i was tempted to just say forget it and sell the boat and fish the pier.
That is the waste of time and taxpayers money that they inspect just to have some documentation that they did some work. Obviously they know both the boat and the person.
@Myballsitchsomethingfierce it's an inspection dipshit. It's for his safety and the safety of other boaters. They weren't going out there seeking to cause him trouble, they were trying to prevent it. Quit being such a cynical douche.
@@matthewmorrison8303 I'm with you. Plus, I'm not taking anything someone says too seriously when they go around announcing to whoever will listen that their balls itch something fierce. I think that explains it all....
Seeing the USCG out on the water is always a welcome sight, I'm more than happy to have them inspect any boat I'm on to double check that it is up to par and safe! Thanks so much USCG for all you do to keep us safe and free!
If ever in doubt, you can call your local coast guard auxiliary and schedule an inspection. Its completely free and they go over whats required by law (federal) and whats recommended. They even do them for paddle craft.
The Government has the right to board without probable cause. The fishing license gives them cause to board. This is harassment and invasion of privacy. Ten Twenty something’s with the only job that has a pension can board your vessel anytime with black soled shoes and guns... I walked away from over fifty years of pleasure boating because this military prevailing attitude under the guise of homeland security. Defying the basic liberties the country was founded on. A working man gets a day off and the coast guard, harbor master, canal police, environmental police and state police can board and harass with no probable cause.. Making sure we are safe ...all a bunch of bullshit.. Have fun boating and paying for these morons...
well done.... guys just doing their jobs... you could have made it a lot harder.. amazing number of 10 year olds commenting on this video having no idea why the CG may have had extra guys on board.. never mind....just send the new guys out without any training?
I usually get boarded once a season by Coast Guard Station Manasquan. The guys and girls are always very professional and just do a quick standard check. Most of the time they allow you to continue towards your marina while they perform their business. I’m glad to know they’re around if I ever had an emergency.
I'm a former merchant marine. The coast guard would board the ferry boat I worked on, to do an inspection of everything, including all of our log books.
I wish they had this in the UK. I've seen some woefully unprepared boaters in the English Channel, one of the busiest seaways on the planet. No lifejackets, no radio, no effin compass even. In fog! I once had to leave my wreck fishing spot to lead some of these ***** back to harbour because, out of sight of land, they didn't even know what direction to steer. The way they were going, in 20 minutes or less, they could have ended up in France, of all places!
Before I joined the Coast Guard I never really understood why we did these kind of checks/boarding but for all the people that don’t know, we do these for the Mariners safety. The whole point is (and god forbid) something does go wrong they are at least half way prepared to survive so we can go out and bring them back alive. Boardings are never malicious, we’re not money grabbing, at the end of the day we want for whoever it is to be safe and get back to dry land with their families.
That's fine and I am thankful for yours and their service. But getting ID from citizens is 4th amendment violation when there's no crime being committed. Plain and simple. I could have sworn that we have the right, as citizens, to travel freely unmolested. No?
@@truthspeaks3147 But I see almost everyone in this situation just roll over for these tyrants and give up their rights without so much as a whimper. It's sad and pathetic but 'Merica!!!
I flew airplanes all over the world and regularly was boarded by officials looking at our "safety equipment" and required items. It GREATLY helped me to have a checklist of exactly what was needed so there was no question about it. The officer seems a little confused about whether you needed a fire extinguisher. NY vessels are required to have a Type B fire extinguisher(s) on board except: Outboard vessels less than 26 feet in length and of open construction (construction that does not permit the entrapment of flammable vapors or gases). I would have this information available, (perhaps in a folder) so there is NO QUESTION. Therefore there is NO SWEAT when out there having a great time and guys show up who might not be as friendly as this group. By having a checklist, doctors in hospital have cut infections, reduced mistakes and my experience as a retired pilot is it makes me have a better quality of day, no question about my legal status . Also, the checklist can include: Gas in the boat, "check", engine oil "check", boat plug "check"....potato chips..."check"...it MAY sound silly but its vital for me and allows my mind to CONFIDENTLY and peacefully stay on the important thing at hand...FISHING and as others have said on posts here..there comes a day you might NEED those things. I am proud of our Coast Guard, they handled themselves well. Nice boat you've got...what is it?
I boat in Maryland and each year get a safety check from the coast guard at the beginning of the season. They issue you a sticker that goes on the left side of the windscreen and the police, coast guard, and DNR rarely bother you because the sticker is visible and they know you are in compliance. They are always polite and professional. Things can go bad fast on a boat, better to be overprepared. The fire extinguisher is important, it might be for another boater in need.
Good morning Scott. That was the Coast Guard Auxiliary that performed the Voluntary Safety Check (VSC). Yes, they still do it, and yes it is at no cost to the boater. The VSC decal tells the Active Duty that you have been inspected and your vessel and its equipment complies with all applicable federal and state law. The sticker is not a guarantee that you won't be boarded, but when the CG is out doing random boardings, chances are that they will skip you in favor of a vessel that does not display the sticker. Want a free VSC? Click here wow.uscgaux.info/content.php?unit=V-DEPT&category=i-want-a-vsc
Really thought they would give you crap about not having a fire extenguisher. I believe in Florida if you have any type of fuel tank it would be required. Just checked. If its a built in tank or the tank is in an enclosed compartment you have to carry a fire extenguiser in Florida. So what you said is correct!
I heard of a group of people who sailed from Europe to north America in a primitive sailboat that didn't meet coast guard rules and the did just fine and they did it to escape government tyranny. Yep they landed at Plymouth rock
One of the reasons I subscribed is the honesty and respect shown when you were approached by the coast guard or law enforcement. This is the kind of thing that young people need to see. Thank You!
I know they are doing their job, but as an American I hate these stops. I have been stopped coming in from fishing and needing to get to work. I also got stopped one time when I was going out to film something time sensitive. It's a pain, but I guess you gotta take the good with the bad.
Had many safety checks in my 30+ years on the water and only ever ran into one prick Coast Guard officer (and he was a newbie besides, classic power trip). All the others I've encountered were nothing but total professionals.
For those who keep asking about showing your I.D., Most states require you to have a Marine Operators Permit which is usually on your state drivers permit along with your Motorcycle Operators permit like mine.
You know....if you ask HYDE I bet they would give you a free inflatable PFD if you asked them! Just would have to make a video on it and it may just save your life. Sits flat on your chest like a vest.
Thank you for videotaping this. As a retired Coast Guardsman, I'm very proud of our Coasties out there doing their job - particularly in the area of boating safety. This is what really helps in curbing disastrous events in the future! Greatly appreciate your sharing this bit of education on how our boardings are done.
Yes. Thank goodness for the coast guard. My stepson is in it are Cortez FL and we just visited them. Very professional and great group of people. They are also our first line of Homeland security. Very important mission. Also keep illegals from entering our country. Great video.
Oh the reserves are on the job. And what pretty new uniforms we all have. Not a paint spot on them. And apparently no one did the boat checks this morning because we don’t have any mooring lines. 🤣🤣🤣 Even money they run aground at least once before they make it back to the station. I was in. I could tell you stories all day.
@@Philitron128 wasted tax dollars. My wife and I are middle class working poor! Because of being over taxed so a whole crew of Coast Guard sailors can do a so called safety check. Let people take care of there own personal safety and not at my expense.
@@Philitron128 So far I have not heard of fire departments showing up at peoples houses unannounced asking for papers and demanding to inspect the inside of your house and issuing fines for violations, at least not yet but iam sure it will be here someday. Sounds like you like the police state and don't want to take responsibility for own safety and like the government holding your hand through life while tax payers foot the bill. You would probably enjoy living in China.
Most respectful and polite guy ever. First time watching your vids but that's an instant subscribe from a fellow fisherman! Great vid and love your attitude towards them
Required or not, a fire extinguisher is a really good idea on a motor boat of any type. Things go to hell real quickly with even a small fire on board.
It's kind of messed up that the coast guard can guard your vessel while the cops can't enter your can without probable cause or a warrant. Same with your home.
No offense to the coast guard guys, I am sure they are just doing what they are told. But wtf.. why is the government coming out to check and see if you have a whistle..
You tell them nothing and if they ask tell them you don’t know them and it is for your safety. That’s what they would say to you. Remain silent and only give them what is required.
Connor Nielsen never said to be a dick, however i also think that informing a public official in the course of their public duties is not necessary. Transparency is key in this day and age. We need to keep all public officials accountable to the people that pay them.
I don't downplay the risks taken by the CG and the lives they held save when things go wrong . Getting stopped randomly while under no suspicion or breaking no laws is just police state tactics IMO. I grew up on the water, I understand that reasons for engagement on the water are different than it would be on the road, but I still look at these encounters as the CG being the ones "fishing".
Nothing different from a server making small talk while talking your order... It's a job they're doing it well. To be honest it's simple regulations that when registering your boat are made very clear to you.
And the extra personnel who were there getting trained, got to see a fine example of a citizen getting stopped for a routine safety inspection and _not_ being a douche about it. So, IMO, worth it!
