Mason Kimball has created a sunroof mounted ram-air scoop for the Mercedes Benz W123 series of automobiles. It might fit chassis series W116, W124, and W126 cars as well. This video shows it mounted to my 1984 300 Turbo Diesel, demonstrates its functioning, and describes some suggestions on how to make it better. So was there a decrease in noise with the scoops, compared with having the sunroof open the same amount without the scoops, and did you feel an increase in ventilation with the scoops compared with the sunroof in same position without the scoops? Thanks.

Thanks for watching. Yes, the scoops made more noise than just the sunroof opened that much. Yes, the increase in airflow was significant with windows open or closed. With the sunroof opened just that little bit there was insignificant air flow. However, at 50 MPH and higher I could close all windows and just have the scoops and the noise was less than with sunroof opened all the way and windows opened slightly. I was trying them out, and I'm not sure I would use them as an everyday convenience as nothing beats a functioning AC.

Just got my scoop today. It brings in a surprisingly large amount of air, almost too much at high speeds. I would be interested to see a full length scoop, say 32 inches, with three built-in air channels that could be regulated with a flap.

So there were options for electric sunroof, and no AC? My 1984 has AC and manual sunroof, but i removed the AC for simplicity in the engine bay

Good question. This product I tested is targeted for those with non-working AC and those with a sunroof and no AC as it will fit all W123 models. I think that by 1984 the W123 300D Turbo Diesel sold in the USA were all optioned to the max. They all came with AC, electric sunroof was optional, and electric windows in the USA. Thank you for watching.

@@kensshowtellgood to know! I do have a German import 230te though

@@VeryMuchSaab I see. that is the difference. The Germans ordering their cars back in the day were more frugal with the "extras." I have a 1971 280 SE that is a USA car but ordered as if the original owner was German. It has AC.; however, the windows are manual, and the transmission is a four-speed manual on the floor. So interesting.
