I own a almost pristine 240d with a automatic transmission. it keeps up with traffic on the highways, a bit slow going uphill... but it is my baby. Never will get rid of it seeing that my dad use to love riding with me in it in his late years and it was the car I gave him his final ride before he passed last year. Dang thing has never left me stranded and is built like a tank despite being hit around three times... and never been to the body shop.

I knew the automatic 240D would be included in this list. Is a shame most people disregard them because “they aren’t turbodiesels” and they are “dangerously slow” for modern traffic. Depending on where you live, even a 200D can keep up to modern traffic because modern traffic is mostly traffic jams, so is not like you will miss having more power.

I own a 200D in the Canary Islands and it can perfectly keep up with modern traffic. Just don't try to race any car... or bycicle... 😂

The 280E is a great machine. All the robustness and smoothness of the W123 line but with enough power to almost never leave you wanting. I think the "so slow" comments about non turbo diesel cars mostly concern very specific driving conditions. For example merging onto a freeway where everyone is doing 80, as you also try to sprint past that semi bearing down on you from the inside lane; or maintaining freeway speed up an incline, where in non turbo diesels sometimes the speed starts scrubbing off. With the 280E, and almost to the same extent with the 230E you never have to worry about any of these situations. The 280E has a gorgeous engine/exhaust note (if you like your women a bit trashy) and will glide around at 10mph or 110mph with equal aplomb and allure.

Just bought a 240D manual getting a wee bit of bodywork sorted and thoroughly enjoying the simplicity of the vehicle. Climate control ? Not a problem the heater works perfectly .

I grew up with a 1977 230 4 speed as our family car, and my uncle had a w114 230.6 also stick in 1980s Africa. Super reliable cars that could go just about anywhere including on mild 4x4 bush trails. Now I’ve got an auto 240d and a w116 300sd. As Pierre says, the 240d is no slouch. Great videos and thank you for your passion!

If you want 0 to 60 times , buy an electric car . These Mercedeses are all about buildquality , style , chroomwork , good allaround vision thanks to slim pillars , and above all .....near indestructable engines . Even a perfect 200 , body and interior , is more worth to me than acceleration , only to break harder for the next red light .

I drive a w123 230 M115 engine and from my diving into the technical aspects of that engine I found that there is an uncanny similarity of that engine to the OM615 and 616. Like even the crankshaft on the 220d has exactly the same technical specs as the gas 220 (the M115 came in three displacements, the 200, 220, and 230) even down the exact part number between the two and you can swap between them all you want. This makes me believe that the M115 engine is either based of or is actually a gas version of the OM615 and 616, which explains why the M115 is such a bulletproof engine

The first year I owned my 77 280E I replaced the entire automatic HVAC with a manual from a 240D rather than mess with that "evil servo" and the rest of that mess. I've had the car now for 33 years and it still treats me well as I treat it well - whatever it needs. And even on the 280E, replacing that $2 bushing on the shift sensor rod makes a huge difference. And I agree with Pierre that a well maintained 240D automatic isn't such a dog - you just have to maintain it properly.

The 230 models are my favorites. In total we had three 230E, and two 230 in the family when I grew up. I am pretty sure my grandad also had a 280E back in the day. There was also a 280CE with us for a brief period. Now we have a 230 with manual transmission and almost no options. No vacuum system, no AC and no sunroof. That is just how I like it. Less equipment means that there are less things that can go wrong. The very best deals for these cars in our country seems to be the smaller gas engines. I particularly like the M115. It is very solid and easy to work on. And it keeps up with modern traffic very good.

A short story, I lend my free time to the auto hobby Pierre and these w123 s with the 617 motors are perfect for just that tradition . My father and I grouped around one little car when I was a youth , this endeavor I later found later in life which became something of a rebirth of who I was from him .The 82-85 turbo have The good bits , the downtube turbo housing is by far the best at keeping any moisture out of the block . This is a large part of WHY these actually preserve very well over any other car . If it’s a low rust area like Houston here , it all pays forward into finding that next knew project . Houston is another reason of it being on my target list solely, the abundance is clearly due to the market here , Mercedes must have sold thousands in its span across this city . The variety of condition varies but 9 out of 10 times I can get it to start and run , to follow is the question of interior and body if a purchase goes through . I’m holding 8 currently , the resale market on them is slowly leaning out . Another 10 years it will be a different conversation .

My first car, 25 years ago now, was a 1977 230, and that was the car that started my life long passion for these cars. I grew up with my parents having BMW’s all through the 80’s and 90’s while my uncles had Mercedes. But I mainly bought it for two reasons. I wanted automatic, and a larger car than the Ford Escort XR3i that one of my friends crashed, and it was basically a tin can. So I thought I would probably crash as well, and wanted something larger. As it turned out, I never crashed it, or any of my other Benzes. I have had two 230’s, and. C123 230CE, a car I really regret selling, and one W124 and still have C124 230CE. Six cylinder cars are much rarer due to crazy prices in Norway when new. My no leather 1987 230CE was still around $100.000 back then over here. Also have a S124. And am looking for a C123 as we speak. And I was surprised about that 4th car. A 280E for me is much more of a dream car than any diesel. As is the 230E, in my book.

280E is the flagship 123 and used the M110 engine Which was almost as powerful as the V8 350SE . Bosch K Jetronic needs careful maintenance by a good mechanic

An Automatic 240D is going to replace my Prius 4 Speed not an option for LA traffic. 280e is a terrific performer similar to 300D Turbo with poorer mpg.

Dear Pierre, being a longtime owner of an 82 230te I would love to hear more about your optimization tips. The 230e is very common in northern Europe, here the turbo diesels are unfortunately a rarity :( I am sure you would make your fans from “across the pond” very happy if you ever were to go in to details on setting up the m102 engine. I'm from South Africa where we had almost the entire 123 range including those like the 200 and 250 that never came to the states. I had a 200 manual and my brother had a 200 auto. They were great cars and frankly I'd love anohter one with an auto transmission. My brother moved to England where they drive on the wrong side of the road, just like in South Africa and he's been looking at trying to import one from there which is a fairly common practice as you can find rust free examples from some parts of SA with a very favourable exchange rate. I'm in Phoenix AZ and there is a nice 80 or 81 280E in my area. I spoke to the owner some years ago and she said it was her Grandfathers car. Can't remember if she was thinking about selling or not but it wouldn't matter as I didn't have the money. Incredibly enough I just saw her driving it again today so evidently it's still going strong. Maybe if I see it again I can try my luck...

Interesting different markets, the W123 230E and 280E were the top sellers In New Zealand, The diesels were never marketed here, we are a mountainous country and as Mercedes cars had high import duty and were expensive, buyers did not want to pay a lot of money for a car that was slow going up hills and sounded like a tractor! There were a small number of diesels imported on special order but the buyers had to accept there would be poor resale value.

Let's be fair the 240D is also just slow. I had a 4 speed manual and I HD a 240D that got a brand new benz crate engine installed and they were both slow. In Michigan there is a lot of elevation as you head north and the highway is a 70mph so people go nearly 80. The 240D will loose speed with the pedal to the floor and cannot hold 70 up hill. That's an issue in the modern world. 300CD non turbo has that issue too won't hold speed up hill pedal down and you're above the top shift mark on the speedo so you cannot bump down a gear.

in my country, Indonesia 230 is less interested. I bought 1978 w123 230 last year for 29 million rupiah (only 1800 usd). maybe because here most of the 230 (as far as I know) have a vibrating idle problem maybe because valve adjusting knowladge that I didnt know till now

If you're going for a W123, you have to get a 300D or a W115 240D manual - Anything else is a step down in the ownership experience.

The gasoline models are quieter to drive. And quicker. Especially the 230E with 136hp and 5 speed. Lighter engines also.

​@@martinsvensson6884 Quieter yes, but the 230E isn't particularly quick or efficient. It's a blended average choice. The motors to enshrine Mercedes W123 in the history books weren't the petrols. The motors used in the most hostile environments for any vehicle weren't the petrols. The OM61X motors are still regarded as legendary!

@@avivscrewvalla Compared to the diesels its very quick. And quiet. Also lighter. What enshrined the w123 into history books was the whole car. Not the engines specifically. Since it in all practice was pretty much just as reliable with a 200/230 carb engine. Most sold was 240D. Due to Taxi market. Second 230E.

And yes, the W123 chassis was remarkable but the trouble free nature of the diesel motors was previously unseen and arguably yet to be bested. To claim that a carbureted petrol motor was as problem free or frugal as the diesels is simply incorrect.

@@singlendhot8628 A 200/230 was pretty much just as problem free as the diesels. Never anything wrong with those engines. My parents had a 200 since new. Kept it for 25-30 years. Only thing that was ever replaced in that engine was the carb membrane in late years. Think it cost about $20. Today diesel is more expensive than petrol here so youre not going to save on fuel now.
