Thank you for this great video. I was able to fix the problem because of it. I'm also not going to use my sunroof any more. The fact that BMW included that tool with its toolkit suggests that they anticipated this problem. I've had several cars of different makes with sunroofs. This is the first one with this problem. I've had other problems with this, my second BMW, that I never had with other brands. This is my last BMW.

This is a sign that your rails are dirty and need to be lubricated. While your sunroof is open, apply a penetrating lube or silicone lube spray into the outside of the rails and inside. It'll save you a lot of time later because this ends up seizing the mechanism if not lubed.

thank you so much my sunroof got stuck open and it started raining and I got home in time to see your video and you just saved my butt in not getting the inside of my car flooded... I live in florida and when it rains here it pours... thanks for the video I never even knew you could manually override the system like that on this car...I have a 2002 BMW 745 li there is so much about this car I don't know... but I will keep watching your vids... thanks again

This just saved me to much money and grief! Thank you so much! I closed it as far as I could get it, then reset the sunroof (holding down the button until it stopped it's cycle) Still isn't working right, but it's closed!!!! I'll deal with fixing it when my funds are right. Thank you!!!!!!!! (Edit: mine is a 2002 BMW 525i... E39 and it worked on mine. I also know little to nothing about cars, so this really helped me)
