K9OJ here, this is a quick demo of the SunSDR2 Pro software defined transceiver and its software EpertSDR2. The SunSDR2 Pro is in my attic and attached to my network via an Ethernet router. I use it remotely through several computers in the house and it can be accessed over the internet from anywhere in the world. I use a mid-level USB gaming headset to listen and transmit so its easy to move the headset from computer to computer. The SunSDR2 Pro puts out around 20 watts on HF and 6 meters and around 10 watts on 2 meters. The SunSDR2 Pro is connected to an attic G5RV dipole for HF and a copper pipe slim jim for 2 meters. I really love this little $1500 radio.

Great video Rob. How do you handle PTT with your USB gaming headset?
@robrobinette

I just use the mouse to click the transmit button on and off.

Can you configure a “hot botton” - such as the keyboard space bar or mouse middle button to trigger PTT ?

Good question but I don't know.

Is the power output variable? Also, I've got the SPE 1K experts amplifier. I'm assuming that I would have to use an ALC between the amplifier and the transmitter? Is this just a cable?

Yes, the "RF" slider at the top center of the video above varies the output power. The radio does have an ALC output that I believe is a standard RCA type connector (my unit is in the attic so I can't verify that).

This is exactly what I'm looking for, something that I can access from my bedroom computer without having to have all the radios and antenna cable running in. You said you're using a gaming headset? Does the headset have to be a good quality one or will most microphone sound good?

I bought a generic Chinese made gaming headset for about $20 and it works fine. I do have to set the mic gain to max in Windows though.

Hi, Thanks for the video. Do you know how it compares with IC-7300 or others SDRs in the market (e.g. Airspy Discovery) ?
@robrobinette
@robrobinette 2 года назад
I have an IC-7300 and they are very similar in performance but the 7300 puts out 100w compared to the SDR2 Pro's 20. The IC-7300 cannot be used remotely without adding software and remote performance is weak in the panadapter output. The SDR2 Pro's panadapter display and operating software is fantastic and upgrades continue to flow from Sun.

@@robrobinette Many thanks for the detailed reply. Since I care more about remote operation I guess probably the best is to save some money and invest in the SunSDR2 Pro. I have a Airspy Discovery but seems that the SunSDR2 Pro RX and software itself will worth the investment.

no a lot of software recognizes the sunsdr2 radios, what cat protocol does it use?
@robrobinette
@robrobinette 5 лет назад
The SDR2 emulates the Kenwood TS-480 for its CAT protocol so a lot of software works with it.

Does this have diversity reception? The ability to listen to one band in the left ear and another band on the right?

I don't believe so.

How would this compare to something like a Flex?
@robrobinette

I'm sorry, I'm not that familiar with the Flex radios.

It's about $5000 cheaper. But it only has 15W out on HF and 7W on VHF.

Sounds noisy. Does it AGC T like the flex?
@robrobinette

Most of the noise comes from the antenna being in my attic.
