Emma you wonderful person, you spoil us too much but I am never going to complain. I just absolutely love the pastel medium and when I watch wonderful pastel artists such as your self, I am always inspired to get my pastels out and work so hard in refining my own abilities. Thank you so much Emma you really truly are an inspiration.

I really loved this ! What a challenge, I watched the entire video and now I"m going to come back and try to do this along with you. That is NOT an easy painting to do in my opinion because there is little detail to follow, due to the sunlight and shadows, and yet you did it beautifully. Thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful lesson with us. xx

Brilliant tutorial Emma. I'm going to recommend this to my students at Lisburn Arts. I can't teach at this level in a two hour class as everyone is working on their own painting projects and time per student id limited..but this is something they can have a good go at..so thankyou! Xx

Thanks for the recommendations Dawn. I know it's always difficult teaching an actual class. Hard to get their attention from their own pieces. Such is the nature of getting absorbed in your art :-)

Emma, I have only just found you on youtube and am thoroughly enjoying your color theory playlist. I started dabbling into art as an anxiety therapy and started with coloring books and colored pencils. I have zero prior training, but have found I have the aptitude for learning. That said, it wasn't long after the coloring books that I found Pastels and now I'm hooked. I even have a nice little collection going...and I too, love the Unison brand. I enjoy painting landscapes the most, but I see a lot of the pastel artists that do landscapes prefer impressionistic paintings. I'm finding I prefer a more realistic painting. That said, your work is exactly what I am wanting to learn. This piece here is fantastic! I will certainly be giving it a go!! I've done several paint alongs and have learned some skills, but not enough to go it alone.....Where to start?? 🌻🎨😁

I'm glad you've found my videos helpful. I think art as a type of therapy is a great thing. Even though it's work for me I still find the actual process of painting therapeutic. Enjoy those Unisons and keep doing tutorials until you find an image of your own that really inspires you. Good luck!

Try not to be hard on yourself. Everyone's first attempts are always difficult. Try to experiment with some different papers and styles to find your preferences :)

Emma Colbert Art .... thank you. I went to the art supply store and got about 4 kinds of paper and so far, Pastel Mat seems to work for me but I haven’t tried that velour paper yet. I only have 14 basic colors in soft pastels to experiment with. I do have some pastel pencils as well. I look forward to learning more with your tutorials. I wanted a pure pigment experience after 19 months of watercolors. Thank you so much. Your work is beautiful.

I love your technique - I have never used velour paper and never rub in the pastel like you do - I also end up with pastel dust everywhere - thank you so much for this tutorial - would you rub in the pastel like you have here if using Pastelmat?
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 4 года назад
Hi Kathy, yes I do tend to rub in my lower layers on most papers to get the pigment blending. It depends on the subject matter, if it's smooth sky gradient then lots of rubbing regardless of the paper. But yes, there is more rubbing on velour to ensure all my lower layers really stick to the fibres. I apply the pastel in thin layers also so it doesn't create much dust.

I love landscapes. I’ve never used velour paper. Do you always blend in all your layers? Do you blend pastelmat also.?
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 5 месяцев назад
I do blend quite a lot generally although since painting this I have experimented a lot more with landscapes on Pastelmat. I'm blending less and using the sticks differently. Check out one of my recent ones at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ywx5OL5B1Yc.html

Hi Emma. Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I am a beginner to art and plan to attempt pastels soon. I note you use Unison soft pastels which seem quite expensive. From your experiences can you recommend another brand which might be a little cheaper but still beginner friendly. Thanks x
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 4 года назад
Hi Deborah, I know there is quite a price difference between some of the brands of pastel. You can of course get started with some of the cheaper brands, like Jacksons own brand of pastels for example which you can see at www.jacksonsart.com/search/?q=jacksons%2Bpastels&___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=087408522c31eeb1f982bc0eaf81d35f. But having said that, pastels are a great medium to invest in, they last a long time and the better quality materials are always better to work with. But certainly, get whatever you can afford and make a start. If you like it you can always add quality later.

What do you put on when finished to stop pastels smudging a lacquer maybe?
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 3 года назад
I don't spray anything on the work, just frame behind glass to protect. Pastels need a frame with glass usually. If I'm just storing it I'll put it between sheets of paper or glassine and store it flat.

What is the size of the velour paper you are using? It looks about 12in x 6in, but I may be wrong. Can never tell on video. If you said it in the beginning, I'm sorry. I guess I missed it. Can't wait to give this a go.
@EmmaColbertArt

I did it 13" x 6.5" but you can work bigger or smaller. Info is at 0:48 in the video. I'll always include that at the start of the demos.

Thank you Emma. I didn't mean the colors just the make. Cos I have jo clue if you can use any type of a pencil or there's a particular ones that work good with pastel. Thank you so much.
