I had a love/hate relationship with this movie. Yes it was long and slow paced at times but the actors were ALL brilliant and the music and cinematography were breathtaking.

I've read the books and they really capture what was going on in this quiet corner of Scotland at the time. My Grandparents are from this area. The accents in the movie make it less authentic than the actual language/dialect really used.

David Fraser This movie was tragic. It definitely doesn’t leave you feeling happy at the end, but that’s how life is isn’t it? It really was beautifully done. The acting superb. What an honor for you to have family from this part of the world ❤️

Who here has seen it and would you recommend it? Other people in the comments have said its kind of boring. If it's still good, I'll end up enjoying it. After all I sat through 4 hours of Lawrence of Arabia and I though that could've been half as long.

As someone from the area, this book is still taught in schools, and I have to say most were incredibly disappointed with the accents, the lack of accurate locations and the general missed sense and atmosphere the novel conveys. Kevin Guthrie is one of the only redeeming features of the whole film. Worth a watch but take it with a pinch of salt.

Fit like quine?......and authentic Howe of Mearns accents....from about 1900 would be understood by who exactly? Authentic is all very well but it has to be understood. Mitchell understood that, and that is why he did not use the authentic accent in his books as even then it would only be understood by locals! I love this adaptation, and I am glad you do think it is worth a watch despite your disappointment.

@@allybally0021 The books were written in English to reach a wider readership. Accents are accents, I think you are confusing them with dialects which are still spoken there, not so much maybe. My Grandparents were from that area , I had no problem understanding or speaking to them and they were born at the beginning of the 20th century. What annoys me is Glasgow accents being used , they might as well use cockney accents.

@@DavidFraser007 Its great that you fully understand the Doric dialect AND accent. Good for you. I must say most Scots struggle with that one if they are not from there. I know what you mean about Glasgow accents (perhaps you should also say dialect) but there are a limited number of actors from North-East Scotland. I loved this film....and the 70s version.

Excited but I'm not. Watching Terrence Davies adapt a novel is like watching Michael Jordan play baseball: he's probably going to bring his A game but it feels like so much is being wasted. Like seriously, *The House of Meh* and *Distant Voices Still Lives* came out of the same head?

Leteca Tiina I had a female friend who was 6 feet tall and she would hold her hand up to the top of her forehead and say, you have to be this tall to ride this ride! Lol I know he was a little shorter than her and it bothered me too. There’s nothing wrong with it, but you rarely ever see that in movies.

while brave women who wanted to fight were not allowed and only had the option of being a nurse... taking care of and serving men as per usual. not to mention, did you miss the part where her father acted as if she were his property? but yes, men are so put upon. If men were ever oppressed, if was at the hands of another man.

This film really had a lot of amateur aspects. It was a real clunker, with some poor acting and direction, and a ridiculous wig on the main character. Tons of bathos, if you're looking for cheap catharsis.
