Come ride the Star Train on the Nevada Northern Railway. SD-9 locomotive 204 takes us up the old "high line" to the mill site at Mc Gill as the shadows fall and the stars come out.
Track for the Nevada Northern Railway was laid over a century ago, connecting one of the largest copper mines in North America to the Transcontinental routes to the North. Today, several of the original coal-fired standard-gauge steam locomotives that were ordered and delivered new to the railroad over a century ago are still in operation! The Nevada Northern Railway is the best-preserved example of a standard-gauge short-line left in North America.
From their web site:
For those of you who aren't fortunate enough to live up here in the Rural Inter-Mountain West, you are missing our breathtakingly beautiful sunsets and night skies. For those of you who live in these parts, you may not have taken the time lately to stop and gaze at the Heavens. Either way, plan a special evening out admiring the sunset as it sinks over the Steptoe Valley, and witness the stars of ours. This area has one of the darkest skies in the lower 48 states which provides the setting for our wonderful night skies.
Experience a marvelous western sunset and watch the stars come out, while enjoying a relaxing train ride in Nevada's high desert country. The train takes you out into the desert, above Steptoe Valley, giving you a wonderful panoramic view of the sunset. On the return trip, enjoy looking up at the stars, as they come out in the heavens above. Weather permitting, you should be able to clearly see the heavens with your naked eye. Bring your smartphone to help orient you to the night sky.
During the trip, enjoy a sparkly glass of champagne, included with your ticket fare. Please note, we do not bring telescopes on this train. This is a celestial tour of the constellations while enjoying the night skies.

I really miss seeing the black night sky dotted by a zillion diamond-like stars! I have lived most of my life where the night sky was like this. So, I have a tendency to take it for granted! In fact, I could actually see the glow all the way from Salt Lake City in the northern sky from my back porch over 100 miles away! The lights from the city make star-gazing rather difficult. I was amazed by the positive reaction from the other train riders when they observed the stars as seen from between the area of Ely and Mc Gill. I was reminded of my previous residence... Street lights from the tiny towns, and the ability to see the headlights from moving vehicles traveling along the local roads. The velvety black sky bejeweled with more stars than the eye can comprehend. The glow of the Milkyway high in the sky overhead. I couldn't help but feeling a bit "home-sick" and missing my old neighborhood. As I listened to the excited comments from the others, I realized how lucky I have been... and that there are so many people who have never witnessed this before! Exciting!

When I was in Afghanistan back in 02, the night sky was incredible, the Ort Cloud was very visible and amazing that one could see it just with the naked eye without help from a telescope. But today one barely gets to see about a couple of stars with all of the light pollution from the city lights.

I happened to be at the Nevada Northern this weekend. I was told that I would be driving #40 as a rental engineer but when I got there found out they would be running #93. I was told #40 was so short of run time hours that they needed to save her for the big finaly at the beginning of October.

Well 93 doesn’t suck either! 40 is still a 3 foot locomotive, I think it’s many peoples favorite locomotive on any railroad. Had a chance to watch the restoration of 93 up close and personal. It to is an amazing locomotive

As a kid when I was in northeastern Missouri way out in the sticks the only street light was 2 miles away in town and there's one single street light at the Town square which didn't Mount to just a gazebo in the middle of town square. We would lay out in the pasture and see who could count the most s stars... That was some 50+ years ago.... But then my dad brought us to Southeastern Wisconsin and it ended that except for the one week we got to go back down home a year to see my grandparents and my cousins and Uncle but I sure did enjoy looking a little stars every time I got down there... now I'm home sick and there ain't no home down there no more from what I understand there ain't even a town no more because the kids there's 104 people last I heard there was 30 some people there... We were in the sticks we were good old Missouri hicks... LOL 😂🤣😆 I sure wish your camera would have picked up those Stars I would love to see them... Will you kids keep having fun and be blessed in Jesus name... BBE 🤗🤗

Hi. Fun story thank you. Yeah the stars were out but we couldn’t film them. It’s fairly easy to take pictures of stars at night but not from a moving train. It requires a tripod and a long exposure neither one of which are going to work on a train.

I wish you had shown the sky but, I understand sometimes it takes a lot of light to capture the sky astrophotography is a tricky art form. What our eyes capture and our brain register is completely different that what a camera catches.Your eyes register light instantly but it takes prolonged exposure to get the images we see of rich star fields. You are right you can't see stars and Milky Way in the city that's why we need area of dark skys were you can see wonderful sights.

Yes our train stopped at the far end but no one really got off. The locomotive did a run around and then pushed us further up the line and then we sat there for about a half hour watching the stars. One of the Train crew explained what we were saying but there were no Rangers on board.

You can see a Dark Sky and all of the stars that it offers by going to Dark Site Finder, clicking on the Light Pollution Map, and selecting a location on the map near you that is at least dark blue if not grey. You'll want to go to that location on a night when there are no clouds, or very few, and when there's a new moon, when the moon is dark. But if you go to the Nevada Northern Railway Museum you'll get see some old trains, take a train ride, and see all of the stars in the sky.
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 3 года назад
Where I lived in St. George we had the most spectacular night sky I’ve ever seen. First of all there is no light deep in the desert, but also the fact that the air is crystal clear and bone dry adds to the effect. The stars are like tiny jewels in the Milky Way is like an effervescent glowing cloud. With the space shuttle or the international space station would fly over it was so bright it was almost blinding.

Great video, but the Nevada Northern Railway operates two night time trains the Great Basin Star Train and the Sunset, Stars and Champagne Train. This video was on the Sunset, Stars and Champagne Train, not the Star Train. On the Star Train the Dark Rangers from Great Basin National Park are on board the train. Both trains are a lot of fun and if Mother Nature cooperates, there are plenty of stars to see.

I feel for many people who don't get the chance to see them. Fortunately there are places where people can go to see the night sky, such as your train ride out of Ely, or like at almost any national monument or National park. Dinosaur National monument. "The monument that straddles the Utah-Colorado border near U.S. Highway 40 has been designated an International Dark Sky Park, meaning the nighttime overhead views have “an exceptional quality of natural darkness,” according to an announcement by the monument and the International Dark Sky Association."
