*spoilers* one thing I really love about this movie is how 1: Mace is the undoubted hero of this piece. Literally everything he said and did was correct from the get-go. And 2: Mace's death is foreshadowed a couple of times. He is associated throughout the whole move with Cold, and Water. He spends his time on the earth room watching cold waves crush against a sea wall. And he is the only crew-member never seen in sunlight. He is always framed under the cold blue of the Icarus II. So his death being in harsh blue light freezing in cold water is very fitting.

I agree he was right but he definitely let his emotions get in the way in some moments. Mainly communicating with Kappa and trying to blame him for the deaths. Yes he made the decision but it was the only decision really, two payloads is better than one. I think Mace and Kappa were both equally the heros and they're acting was extraordinary in this film.

I thought my screen or the movie was broken for some reason when they entered the ship and saw a literal face in the screen. I was barely looking at my monitor because I was doing work while watching the movie but I caught the exact single frame at the right time and it spooked me out. Had to rewind the frames multiple times to confirm if i was just tripping or not but then it started to show multiple single shot frames of different people. The Sun itself is one of the main characters in the movie. It's not only the main goal/ purpose/ target/ destination of the main characters. With scenes like that, when they stare at it, when its burning them, when it kills them, when it's so loud (as in the beginning of this video), it itself shows traits and affects the rest of the crew and the journey. It's not only the background, the mentioned thing, the motive, the thing the screenplayer had to come up with so the rest have a purpose to be there - it actually takes part in the story.

@@ceapy Just about NOTHING in this movie would have ever taken place and it causes the believability to plummet. There would never have been a deviation from the set course. One person wouldn't be up all night implementing a course change without it being triple checked and implemented by the entire crew and authorized by the Captain. The ship didn't need to be turned to the extent that it was and was apparent since there was enough shielding provided at less of an angle once it began to turn back. "I'm going to give them as much shade as possible" 🤦🏻‍♂️. Also, the communications array was the only thing that they thought would be damaged and they "forgot" about the oxygen farm, the most important thing on the ship mind you, and the fact that it would also no longer be shielded in it's rotation 🥴 Herrrr Derp! Then, the entire ship has to be undocked to dock with the other ship 🥴. NO! They would have a shuttle, but that wouldn't work for the plot twist because then they would have seen pepperoni man on board a small shuttle with them. And the ship only has one air lock....🤦🏻‍♂️🥴, Yeah NO! Strange how when the "bomb" was detached from the ship there was another airlock at the front 🤦🏻‍♂️🥴🥴🥴🥴! Herrrr Derp! And then somehow pepperoni man has super strength and can't be killed🤦🏻‍♂️. Was it the magical sun that fried him up and gave him super strength 🤣. And was it meant that home-slice psychologist was on his way to being pepperoni man #2, but got bested by pepperoni man #1 🤣 (so F-ing stupid)? If the entire human race hangs in the balance, none of this would take place. The lives of 8 people are expendable for the lives of billions and a bunch of millennial types would not be running around playing ship for such an important task. This movie is horrible, unbelievable and is not even close to a masterpiece as some claim. The visuals are amazing, but the plot seems like it was written by some board highschool dropout trying to make some money.

Thank you for making this video, I love this movie! And it's got such great actors (Murphy, Sanada, Yeoh, Strong... but really, everony was fantastic and it's great to see C. Evans in one of his early roles). And then there's the visuals, and the music! I am always happy to see this film get some recognition!

Spectacular film! I watched it in an almost empty London cinema on release; an unforgettable experience. I was there for the soundtrack 'Underworld' collab, too. The visuals are still fantastic and have a realism to them, not found in many CGI fests today. The 3rd act doesn't bother me particularly. I kind of like the Pinbacker trying to stop humanity playing God, aspect. If Danny B had tried to pull off a '2001', the film might have ended with a flaccid sputter. Anyway, thanks for your dive into this essential sci-fi film

One of my favorite movies, I think it's super underrated. It's almost Lovecraftian in that the characters go up against a force so epic and unstoppable and so much bigger than them, it drives some of them insane. One of the best depictions of a force like that in cinematography imo.

I’m convinced Icarus’ ship design was taken from a Star Wars novel, Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire. There was a planet the characters visited that was super close to its star and they had a ship like Icarus with a massive shield to escort smaller ships to the planet. If you see the way they rendered it in the comic adaptation (issue 2) you’d swear they almost pulled it right off the page.

@@FrostedTwo not true. It turns out the captain of the first ship starts to worship the sun and believes humanity should end so waits for the second ship. The director even explains that. It's foreshadowed through the second ships doctor being fansinated to a spiritual level about the sun.

Wish I had seen this one back in 2007 in a theater. It came and went so fast though......has grown on me over the years. It also references Darkstar; Pinbacker (Mark Strong) and Pinback (Dan O'Bannon in Darkstar). This film looks great because they clearly used a lot of practical effects and tasteful CGI. Worth a couple watches easily if you haven't yet. Thanks for the review. BTW, 2001, Tarkovsky's Solaris and Alien are all bleak and amazing films. It is okay that Sunshine has a bleak outlook.

I loved the play between heat and cold. Earth is dying under a sheet of ice, the oxygen garden burned to ashes, the captain dies enveloped by the suns fire, another frozen solid in the vacuum of space, another burned away in the unshielded observation deck and another killed in the frigid cooling tank. Then, when the elements have already taken their toll, the rest are killed by our greatest enemy, our fellow man. I think that's why the final act took such a strange turn in theme, because while the immensity of nature is overwhelming, dangerous and hypnotizing, our greatest challenge will always be human nature. Even as the rest of the world banded together for the greatest feat of science and engineering in history, all it took was one crazed mind to threaten everything. And it was someone who had been trusted with the most important task of leading the first mission...
