You certainly know how to pick great sounding "off the rack" guitars. I've had some of those same Gibson models, ones that are too "bright" or too "dark", but that one you're playing is just right - having that warm, creamy tone that we love from so many 1960s records. Anyway, I love all your Gibsons, and if you dont have a video showcasing your entire collection - you definitely need one!

I'm an 11 year-old guitarist, I play by ear, and I have a RU-vid channel that shows some of my songs, and I'm beginning to try to do some covers. My first cover is "Peaceful Easy Feeling." Btw, Great Jam from Cream, I was 17 years old when that came out, I played Percussion for years before switching to Guitar, I always wanted to play it first, but I got into Latin Percussion. Also love the work you are putting out on other great groups, e.g., Led Zep, The Who , etc. Woodstock was my era!!

I've always appreciated everything you've done for us aspiring song players. If you have critics they fall into two groups those who are jealous of your talent and those who are guitar purists who think the instrument is some mysterious gift from ancient astronauts to be worshipped and awed. Love how you relate the guitar to the song. Whether it's what EC played or not I don't care, it's about knowing that it's the right tonality. It keeps me thinking about this stuff. Cheers
I've studied this song for years. I'm 68 and started playing when I was around 15. If you listen carefully to the studio version, I think EC occasionally played a barred D7 by lifting his pinky off the 4th string.
JJ love this one, you r right every time you (we)play the lead it doesn't sound like EC cuz it's EC! heh heh. I always forget to 'rake" the strings on the main riff - Thanks for this, been working through it over the years- good pick to show us thanks man. )
Dear James, I have been watching your videos for about three years now. I love and appreciate all of your videos as they are great choices in music and your guitar work is flawless. It's surprising and amazing really how you are able to upload like you do and play these songs so accurately. Anyway, I have been playing for three years and although I am getting better I would like to learn more by ear which I struggle with and would like to learn a lot of blues. Have you any advice as to how to get better at both of those? Thanks again.
Nice tutorial, like that it isn't note for note. This helps people learn by ear which is crucial to learning! Kinda depressing when none of us have the Clapton hands though haha!

Check out Funkadelic. They can get very heavy. Lots of fuzzy, chunky licks and grooves. I highly recommend them to anyone who likes Cream, Zeppelin, and well, anyone who likes heavy, guitar-driven classic rock. Anything before Cosmic Slop is going to have a raw, dirty sound. Cosmic Slop and beyond is more produced and clean. All are great!
Naw, I can’t do that. However, I will, off the top of my head, type all the albums. Now you can copy/paste from here and listen to an upload of the entire album somewhere on RU-vid. Start right here with Parliament: First Thangs. Just do it. Then, they changed their name to Funkadelic and made these albums, which I believe are in chronological order: Funkadelic (s/t); Free Your Mind...And Your Ass Will Follow; Maggot Brain; America Eats Its Young; Cosmic Slop; Standing On the Verge Of Getting It On; Hardcore Jollies; and Tales of Kidd Funkadelic. Then, when you’re finished with Funkadelic, put on Parliament: Chocolate City. All the songs on all those albums are the songs you should check out. Sweet dreams!
I would love to see you add some Paul Simon or Simon & Garfunkel tunes to the collection. It'd be awesome to hear you play songs like My Little Town, Run That Body Down, Cecilia, Baby Driver, Keep the Customer Satisfied, and Paranoid Blues. Although, I'd be grateful for just about any song. Anyway that's my selfish request haha.

My son is learning to play, and I saw that he'd been watching tons of your tutorials (he's learning super fast, btw. Thanks). You teach a ton of who we're obsessed with; The Beatles and Zeppelin, and not just the mainstream hits. \m/

+James James I've been playing "Hard to Handle" Crowes, at B 7th and F# at the 10th then back to B then down to A, E, F# in the first position. I hope I said that right so don't pile on people. This ones very similar. The D to C then back and walk up to the F note on the G string at the 10th and then A to C to Gmaj is all so similar to what I'd been practicing. I was shocked when I tried this. I don't have any experience with the picking and soloing. That would be another story. My fingers are now glassy and I have the strength and stamina to get through songs that aren't in the first position. Your teaching works! And I really like the last few lessons where you called out the chords as you switched them. Thanks again!
+James James Oh, and I've been practicing all these lessons on a Gibson L140 acoustic to build strength and because I love that acoustic sound. It has a bluesy, rock sound to it. And it'll actually rock pretty good plugged into the Marshall. Has an amazing tone.
+James James Transferred some of these skills to "The Wind Cries Mary". I wish I had been practicing up here and with notes a long time ago. I'm learning at a faster rate now. Happy boy!
I've watched several classical guitar players play this, naturally. But it doesn't really sound like the one from Heartbreaker, I don't think that's how Jimmy did it.
+James James Yeah, Bouree was a sort of guitar-hippie's badge of honor there for a while, along with Hall of the Mountain King. Jethro Tull pretty much built an entire era of its career riffing on Bouree.
