Welcome to Sunshine Swim Center. This is an overview of one of our Sunfish level skills. Here at Sunshine, we believe in instructor education, water safety and creating a love for swimming in all of our classes.
Our Sunfish Level is an intermediate level; for swimmer's 4 years old and up with a ratio of 4 swimmers to one instructor.
Jumping in and Treading water: 30 seconds
Treading water is the movement of your arms and legs below the water to keep your head above the water. It is an important water safety skill as it provides the swimmers with a necessary tool for when they are in the deep end of the pool and need to get back to the wall or in an emergency situation if they accidentally fell into a body of water.
Treading Water Sequence:
We find a teaching area where all swimmers are unable to touch the bottom of the pool. Instructors a teaching aid, such as a wall or lane line for students to hold onto when not treading water.
While swimmers are holding onto the wall or lane line, we practice kicking our feet while maintaining a vertical body position. Swimmers will want to use bigger bicycle or breaststroke kicks to help keep their head above water. Smaller fast scissor kicks will cause them to get tired quickly.
Once they get the hang of the kicks, we add in the arms. Swimmers need to move their arms in and out close to their body, pushing and pulling the water with their hands.
After mastering treading water we jump into the pool to simulate falling into a body of water. This allows swimmers to practice what to do if they ever feel into a pool and needed to keep their head above water.
