This isn't the first review of the SunSun HW-303B External Canister Filter to appear on RU-vid, but I wanted to post my personal experience since there seem to be widely varying opinions on this product. I've been running the SunSun 303B Canister Filter on my 26-gallon nature aquarium for the past three years and it's done a flawless job. It's quiet, reliable and effective. The SunSun line of filters has attracted a lot of criticism over the years, but my SunSun 303B External Canister Filter with 9-watt UV Sterilizer has performed perfectly.

Ive had mine for 8 years and still going strong. Ive never replaced anything on it and I bought it second hand too so God only knows how many years it's being running. I too have never bothered with the UV. I'm now looking to replace it as I've found it's hard to start up unless I bang the top of the filter. I think the impeller might be stalling when the power is cut. Sometimes I can get it pumping if I switch the power on and off a few times but today I cleaned the thing and impeller etc and then spent 40mins trying to get it pumping again. I'm now going to buy another as it's probably on its last legs now.

I enjoyed this video! I just bought this filter to run on a temporary holding tank because we’re moving house and I have to take my reef tank apart to turn the fish room back into a bedroom....long story, but I’m planning on adding this SunSun to the Fluval I already have running the temporary tank. Reef tanks need lots of flow and I won’t have a sump, so the extra capacity for both flow and bio media will really help. I’m slightly terrified of this whole process and it really helped me to watch your video. I’m very careful with equipment so hopefully this will pay off given the SunSun isn’t exactly built like a tank. But I only need it to run for about six months, so 🤞🏻. Lol, congrats if you’re still reading, I’m known to be chatty. 😁 And let me say - that is one gorgeous nature tank you have, just stunning. 👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks for your kind words. I used to have a reef tank so I know how nerve-racking any changes or adjustments can be. My filter has been running nonstop for four years now so I think you'll be okay for six months. Good luck with your move and your temporary setup.

Good luck with your purchase. I hope you find it as reliable as I have. I recently had to purchase a new quick-release mechanism, due to a degraded O-ring that can't be replaced, but this filter is still performing like a champ.

Great video jay simple elaboration , I just bought 303 B yet to instal couple of questions Can we replace UV filtre light ? and does this UV filter beneficial in controlling algae ? or doesit kill Beneficial bacterias also?

Thanks. The UV bulbs are replaceable if you know where to find them. It's my understanding that SunSun replacement parts are becoming hard to find, unfortunately. The UV will only control algae suspended in the water such as the type that causes green water. I recall reading somewhere that it's not powerful or efficient enough to kill everything.The writer also recommended running the UV only when needed since continuous use can ultimately damage the plastic trays around it.

How did you put the output on the bottom of the aquarium? Did you use additional tubing? I am interested in that setup for surface agitation. Well done!

Hmm, good question. I only used the rigid tubing that came with the filter with the addition of an extra 1/2" (?) PVC elbow. I joined all the pieces using 1" segments of 5/8" ID plastic tubing to minimize flow restriction. I've got a picture that gives you some sense of the setup though it's largely blocked by hardscape. I don't know how to attach a pic to this reply though.

Hi, Great video. Have the offer of one of these at a great price but will be putting it on a 125L ( about 35 US gal) so was thinking the flow rate maybe too powerful? Notice your tank in the video isn't huge, what size is that one? Don't want the tank looking like a washing machine!! Thanks in advance.

Hi, Very recently I bought Sunsun HW 304-B canister filter. I found the UV light is not working continuously and always blinking from the beginning. Is this normal or it has to lighting continuously without blinking.

A blinking UV light doesn't sound good to me. Did you buy it new? If so, I'd return it.

is it ok for 17 gallon to 20 gallon?

It depends on the inhabitants of your tank, and their requirements. It worked well on my 25-gallon, but White Cloud Mountain Minnows are hill stream fish that appreciate higher flow. Plus, I placed the spray bar outlet at the bottom of the aquarium so the surface agitation was reduced.

How much media does each basket use? I’m looking at getting matrix but don’t know how many liters to get to fill 1 tray.

According to this link www.amazon.com/SUN-Replacement-Media-Basket-HW-303B/dp/B01JQUYLRC the 303B trays measure 8"x3"x8" or 192 cu. in. That converts to 2.98 litres. That seems like a lot to me so DON'T take my word for it. Three years ago I purchased 1 litre of Matrix and I'm pretty sure it didn't fill one tray, but three litres?? Not all the tray space is useable due to the intake tube passing through each tray. I'd have to take apart the filter to get measurements and that won't happen for another couple of months. There are various threads on this topic on message boards so do some research and make an educated guess.

Is a 20 gallon long tank too small for this?

Maybe a bit. It depends. If you're using a spray bar on the return probably not. Using the nozzle attachment on the return might be a different story. It also depends on your fish, whether they enjoy/need a lot of flow. My White Clouds are hill stream fish so they don't mind more flow.
