At 19-years-old, SUNY New Paltz field hockey sophomore Sam Moran never thought she'd lose her ability to walk. Last winter, Moran was diagnosed with a rare disease called Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves that can leave the body completely paralyzed. She had to re-learn how to use basic motor functions. Doctors thought she would be walking again with assistance in six months. Moran shattered that diagnosis, as she worked herself to walk again within a month and began running a month after that, and less than a year later starred on the Hawks Field Hockey team as their starting center back this fall.
