Made the most of the high rainfall and went stand up paddle boarding on the flooded River Stour in Essex / Suffolk. A quiet paddle turned in to a phone call to the police!

Great shout! Didn’t even think about that. I wonder if the police are on board with what3words and accept that over the phone? Pinned the comment 📍

@@MorewithMat Yup. Most Police/Fire/Ambulance control rooms and Coastguard now accept it. We find it much quicker. Full list of emergency services here: what3words.com/news/emergency/three-words-for-a-faster-emergency-response/

1) when entering a fast flow from an eddie, lift the upstream edge of the paddle board that allows water to flow under the board and not flip it. Watch the kayakers as they enter the flow and watch the water hit your board. 2) do not have an ankle leash, if it gets wrapped around something where your board goes one way and you go the other, you will be trapped with no way of releasing. Have a waist, or arm leash. 3) if you have or use rope (read leash here) on moving water, ALWAYS have a knife to cut it in emergencies. 4) You must be able to reach the knife, with one hand, left or right handed, AND you must be able to use it one handed, so folding knives are a no no. Basically the knife should be in a quick release safety holder.

Hi Michael, 1) Yes that makes sense will try that next time might be more successful for me! 😂 2) Yes a number of people have made that comment I can now see how that could happen so just do not wear one for the time being. 3/4) Fair enough I don’t use a rope leash/knife. Thanks for your comments 👍🏼🏄🏼‍♂️

@joewei7320 2 года назад
To get rid of the knife handling, just think about using a snap shackle. It's much easier to release by pulling at a short ribbon attached to the ring of the snap shackle. I use such a snap shackle for my safety tether when sailing a yacht ...
@MorewithMat
@MorewithMat 2 года назад
Hi there, yes makes sense seen a similar sort of thing before
@turdwarbler
@turdwarbler 2 года назад
@@joewei7320 While in principal a snap link will provide a solution to this problem it does not negate the need to carry a river knife for emergencies. When operating in moving or white water on rivers, regardless whether in a kayak, canoe, or sit on, or stand up, if you have leashes, mooring cord, tow lines, portage lines, or throw lines, these can get accidentally wrapped around objects and your body or limbs, and you will be held under tension against the flow of the water. If the flow is great enough you can "plane" to the bottom, so always carry a knife as described previously. It can save your life, or somebody else's. Given the sad news in the last few days, I will also add, that "flooded" rivers are dangerous for all sorts of reasons. You need to understand exactly what you are doing if you venture onto a flooded river, and you need to know what features you are going to meet, how those features change with higher water levels, where they are, and what you can do to avoid them. Remember, stopping on a flooded river is NOT always an option.

Nice video! I'm sure your a seasonable, sea-fairing gentlemen, but you do need a quick release leash for flooded rivers in particular.

Thanks! Yes I would like to think so! Guilty, guilty as charged. The river is a well known relative of the cruel mistress sea

Nice to paddle in flood. Why opt for an ankle leash on the river? Quick release waist leash not be safer?

@@MorewithMat you definately should get a releasable leash. You commented in the video the flow pulling you into/under the trees. If you get pulled under one and your board sticks in the tree you will be underwater downstream of the tree held by your ankle leash which will be almost impossible to release. For flooded rivers you want a releasable option and also a bouyancy aid as if you have had to release you have little bouyancy in just a wetsuit. Have fun Supping but take real care on flooded rivers

@@MorewithMat HF SUP buddy, about £22 waist leash. No metal to rust. That’s what I use, seems OK. Just connect your ankle leash to It.

You should be wearing a PFD / Buoyancy aid.
@MorewithMat
@MorewithMat Год назад
Yes should have been. On this outing I felt like a PFD could pose a risk of getting caught in branches etc if I did fall off. A slim non bulky one would have been ideal. Atleast the wetsuit brings an element of buoyancy

Oh my word you guys are at it again. Please get to grips with correct safety measures. You seem completely unaware of your surrounding and have a lack of understanding of the conditions. People are watching this and possibly getting the wrong message. Your “safety first” leash round the ankle in swift water is lethal.
