it was Super 6-4 that was going down super hard not 6-1. either we we lost those birds along with a lot of good men i say that respectfully and i don't mean to come off like im correcting you just for the overall love of what these guys went through. when he said "Walcott bird is hit" was when i got goosebumps.
Enemy militia fighters were probably the only well-fed lot in the whole country. Not saying your wrong, but they probably jacked food supplies brought in by Red Cross or whoever.
The dialogue between all the characters is some of the best parts of the film. Like when their chopper got hit Wolcott: "you wanna pull those BCLs up or what? Copilot: "Right babe" Great film overall.
@@jth4242 it's the "Power Control Lever" it's essentially the Helicopter's throttle Wolcott is telling his Copilot to kill the power to the engines as the helicopter enters it's auto-rotation toward the ground. There's two reasons for that. It give's you the flexibility of powering back up before impact to lessen it, and it should help prevent some of the spin resulting from the damage to the tail rotor.
@@ishrendon6435 Actually plays to an interesting theory, years later during the war on terror information was found that AQ were among those sending arms shipments to Somalia in hopes of a Pro extremist group taking control, in keeping with how they did business back then they also sent their own advisors to help train the Somalia Militia groups with the new toys they were sending which included RPG-7s. The theory suggests that this contributed to how the Somalis were able to react so well during the Mogadishu raid as these advisors had been along with them in past raids which helped them to learn how to fight the Americans and that the Black hawks were shot down likely by AQ backed Somalis or AQ advisors themselves. No way to ever confirm this of course but its an interesting theory none the less. Did the film makers know this when they cast this guy? Not a chance haha, but still in a round about way it kind of works totally by accident.
0:26 Its impressive how this actually happened - Walcott's about to have one of the most violent helicopter crashes in the history of warfare and he is still staying cool and trying to bring her down gently. Pilots are a different breed.
Lool at Sully he did that crap with an airliner into the water it is amazing. Then again they always teach you. Warfare definitely is a different breed but in the end we all have a big responsibility and thats safety and the fight for our survival to do our duties.
Actor is Razaag Adoti. His character was based on a real somali militia called Mo´Alim. In the movie he is killed by Eric Bana´s character but in real life he survived the battle. He was interviewed by Mark Bowden for the Black Hawk Down (book). Real Mo´Alim doesn´t look anything like that actor. Real Mo´Alim was skinny guy
@@haskapaska well yeah, real Somalis are skinny, like from that movie Captain Phillips who plays the pirates. The black actors in this movie look mostly Nigerian or West African.
The US underestimated Aydid. Aydid had been educated at a military academy in Moscow, and he learned about the tactics the Mujahideen used to devastating effect against the Soviet in Afghanistan, particularly by shooting down their helicopters with RPGs and Stinger missiles. His militia were ordered to shoot down helicopters because the Americans would not abandon their men and this would trap them in the city were the militia could overwhelm them with superior numbers.
0:34 Music is instantly cut The helicopter begins to uncontrollably spin "Super 6-1, going down!" echoes through This scene is a perfect representation of the sudden chaos the soldiers must have felt
This is why in the army they teach you blackhawks or even little birds are not allowed to hover that low to the ground even for CAS engagements unless theyre doing combat insertions.
Founded by "Hoot" - Norm Hooten (real-life Special Ops MSG ret.) - played by Eric Bana in Black Hawk Down, Hooten Young Cigars and Whiskey honors the true mission from this movie. Shop the Rye Whiskey and Operation Gothic Serpent 30th Anniversary cigar in homage to this historic US Military mission.
At 1:12 you could tell that Captain Steele knew from that point on they were going to go to war in hell itself. RIP to all our service members that were lost in that campaign...
1:10 Anybody else see the hand sticking out of the Black Hawk model there? EDIT: Nvm that's the hand of the guy inside the chopper who almost got thrown out.
@@MA_Colt funny enough they not only used real helicopters but they also really shot rpg's at them, crashed them and killed the actors. That's how dedicated to this story they were
There is evidence that Wolcott intentionally maneuvered the chopper so that the nose hit first, meaning that the pilots would take all the impact but the other crew members would more likely survive. Toughest call in the world to make, but he pretty much saved everyone else in that chopper by sacrificing himself
@@TheGreatJakester if i remember correctly from the descriptions given by the books, the choppers pilot seats had dampeners or soemthing like that for impacts but everyone else did not. Maybe Wolcott figured it was in his best interest to help lessen the impact for the crew since he had a higher chance of surviving impact? Also it is stated that had the tail of 6-1 not hit a building the chopper would have landed upright in a similar position to 6-4 (Durant's chopper) which might have saved the pilots' lives
The U.S made one mistake and that was not expecting the unexpected. They succeeded in their mission however, aidid knew the u.s doesn't leave troops behind so they used that as a weakness and exploited it.
@@DevinEMILE and Aidid learned this when the Mujhadeen (Now Taliban) used to shoot down Hinds using MANPADS, thinking that if they managed to do that on Soviet Hinds with Stingers...then they could do too on Blackhawks using RPG-7 Launchers.
You can actually listen to the actual comms of this battle. Like in the movie, the pilots continue to joke with each other and do their jobs until the impact.
The Pilot Actually died Because He Sacrificed His Life Because at the last moment he dived the front of the helicopter so nobody in the back dies like the crew chiefs and everyone else
That landing was off a bit. Walcott nosed the Blackhawk down and drove the nose in first. This saved the crew in the back as the alternative was a side hit and they all die. Walcott saved his crew in the finest traditions of all pilots.
The military helped on the film's production (hence all the real blackhawks instead of hueys or something) so they definitely had someone around to tell them what an RPG looks like. They made them slow on purpose so the audience understands what they're looking at. It's like how movies use a ∞ shape to represent looking through binoculars even though that's not what it looks like. It's visual language for the benefit of the audience.
I watched this like a dozen times and like the 13th time i asked my self a question...If the SF guy saw the skinny with the RPG why didn't he do a mag dump instead of talking?
@@M4A1_DELTA6 an A10 or M1 abrams would likely be too extreme and ineffective. M1 abrams would be sitting ducks to RPGs spams and some road are too narrow for the tanks to intersect. But a M1 abrams would likely be able to stop a militia advance. A10 will likely do more harm than good and kills more civillian than militias.
@@M4A1_DELTA6 Originally before operation gothic serpent, an request was made to pentagon for a AC130 gunships to be send in to support the operation. It was rejected. Also The USMC had, and used, M1 abrams in their deployment in somalia. But the US armor was subsequently withdrawn as part of “humanitizing the mission”. a single AC-130H or Abrams tank could had prevented the tragedy.
also i just realized something US soldier could had used the miniguns on the blackhawk and sweep off militias away from the crash sites. *the onboard miniguns are probably badly damaged after the crash and wont function, i dont think its gonna work even if they did that.*
@@4thdimensionai972 i completly agree with you , i might sound like an asshole but i really wouldnt give a shit seeing a AC130 blowing the fuck outta that crowd , yes they were alot of civies but they were hostile throwing rocks , if a militia dude died guess who picked up there gun , the civie , thats somthing i still dont get why attack the ones that were giving you food to survive ? maybe the militia didnt leave them a choice
Fun fact: IRL the RPG is designed as an antitank grenade and firing one directly into the air would almost certainly kill the user. In 1993, Aidid's militia were using modified RPG launchers repurposed as antiaircraft weapons, with the back vent redirected away from the user.
John 15:13, There is no greater love than this-that a man should lay down his life for his friends. And the pilots of Super 6-1 demonstrated that as they put the helicopter down nose first so the pilots would take the force and not the crew in the back
I could be wrong but didn’t the pilot purposely push the nose forward at that last second so the pilots would take most of the impact and save those in the back
The helicopter at 0:12 and 0:33 flying very low. In the 0:34 the rocket hit the helicopter going down at 0:57 but it look to fly at a much higher before.
if anything as well as trying to make it stable again, they will have also tried to gain height to have as much time as possible to stabilize or figure something out, obviously most of the time this never really works out but its worth a shot in case it does, and the comment above me too
Fue un error táctico. Un error demasiado casual. O se creían indestructibles hasta que les demostraron que no lo eran. Igual un ejército tan entrado como los EEUU no le debería pasar eso.
I honestly hope for realism sake they person who spotted the person with the RPG setting up didn't yell out "RPG" and to move. I honestly hope in real life he attempted to take him out while calling out RPG because it would be INCREDIBLY negligent to call something like that out and NOT shoot the dude when you already have your rifle in your hands and know he's going to fire. Like...really? REEALLY?!
What I don't understand is how do the pilots die? It doesn't look like the helicopter hits the ground *that* hard to just straight up kill them instantly. Am I missing something.
The real life footage not only makes you question how *anyone* survived, not only how Dan Busch was able to get out and defend the crash site, but how the Little Bird pilot that attempted to rescue him was even able to land at all in such a tight alleyway (unfortunately, that footage is not available). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hX_wr15Mryw.html
You're right; as is the case too often, ridley scott fucked this crucial scene up! Nevertheless, it's still powerful; but, you are spot-on in your synopsis!
I thought the same way too. I figured they had copied the real footage and used it for the movie. Turns out, the real footage actually has them impacting a lot more severe than what we see. Blackhawks are designed for the crew to survive crashes like you saw in this clip. The REAL footage however shows the impact was much harder than what you see in the movie.
Makes you wonder what US general thought raiding a big town full of AK carrying citizens in broad daylight, with almost no friendlies, was a brilliant idea.
They were after Mohammed Farrah Aidid who was responsible for starving thousands of innocent Somalians.America could take Somalia over in one weekend if they wanted
I am a somali at the time of this incident i was a child but i lost many of my relatives who will take responsibility for that. i think American government will take the responsibility also for them they had learned a good lessons somalia belongs to somali people 👫 😺😺😺😺 🇸🇴
