This boy made me work for my money, let me tell you. Normally I don’t film teaching the BED command with clients because I have so many videos teaching it but I knew this would be different to any of those videos I’ve already got and this is a video that could help someone who’s dogs just are not getting the bed command the conventional way.
You see a lot of dogs will get Bed, very quickly and very easily but Hugo here does not like being told what to do. Hugo is 16 months and for 16months he has been allowed to get away with things to the point he is quiet happy doing whatever he wants. He is so use to getting his own way with people that he has learnt clever ways to get his own way.
Hugo jumps up, steals stuff, mouths (hard), barks, runs off and never switches off. He also does not listen to anything that does not suit him and he will try to control situations anyway he wants.
Put him in his bed, he runs out, put him in his bed, he jumps on the sofa, put him in his bed he bites the lead, put him in his bed he jumps up and mouths and hugs your leg, put him in his bed, he barks at you.
Those are just some of the things he tries to do, to keep little control.
So I know a lot of people don’t like the term dominance as it’s been used and abused and misinterpreted, but this is a case where you could label the dog as dominant, he likes control and he likes being in control but I do prefer the term assertive and/or controlling.
And yes some can be dominant, just as some dogs can be submissive, the only reason people don’t like the terms is because it’s loosely thrown around.
The very definition of Dominance is: power and influence over others.
Now if you’re sitting there wondering what the point of all of this is, it’s simple. Hugo does not know how to switch off. Teaching him bed means bed, means he can be sent somewhere to relax. It means even though it’s go to your bed and do nothing, it’s still doing something and this will help calm him down.
That and other exercises we taught the owner. Fussing him when he is calmer. Not rewarding his pushing and excitable Behavior. Making sure you do things on the owners terms and not his.
