My church hosted a Super Bowl party for this game, and we had one side decorated for the 49ers and the other for the Chargers. Jaws dropped when Jerry Rice caught that first touchdown because of how quickly it happened. When Ricky Watters caught that second one, as soon as he crossed the goal line the Chargers poster fell to the ground, no kidding. We joked about, "Maybe God's trying to tell us something."
This was probably the most lopsided matchup in the entire run. Even more than the Bears and the Patriots. The 49ers trounced the Chargers in the regular season. Everyone knew the Niners were going to win big and they did.
Vividly remember this game. 20 years old, my older brother bought some Guinness, had just moved out of my parents house, huge 49er fan, finally Steve Young proved his worth.
Regardless what people say....The "SAN DIEGO" Chargers did make it to the Super Bowl in the 1994 Season! At least back then, I got to see my NFL Team in the Super Bowl!
I remember this game and I was pulling for the 9ers. I also recall Chris Berman always "Natrone Means Business" a lot, probably one of his best nicknames. Natrone is pretty much the epitome of an NFL one year wonder, he didn't do much after this season. Not sure what went wrong.
I was stationed At NAS North Island during this game. I'm a 49er fan, while my Master Chief was a Charger fan. I went into the supply office early Monday morning, and hung my vintage early 80s 49er Starter jacket on the wall, behind his chair. Let's just say...he wasn't happy. OOOOOH Good times!
That last chargers touchdown wasn’t entirely insignificant; it made this the highest scoring super bowl of all time, a record that still stands almost a quarter century later.
I was 12 years old and my parents made me go to church so during service I snuck out and went 2 houses next to our church where they were showing the game outdoors I was watching the game behind the fence ...when my dad caught me it was all worth it
So much was made about that 49er offense that the defense may be a little overlooked. Through the 80's and early 90's the 49er offense ranked #1 quite often. The defense however quietly sat at #2 or #3 on a consistent basis.
+B_side 1986 T Jack Ass wanted as much money as Jerry Rice. He flopped as an Eagle and anything else. To me he was the most hated Niner. Chargers had their chance 79-82. Most royal flops as a young teenager. Still remember that cheapskate owner Eugene Klein giving up on Fred Dean, John Jefferson, Gary Big hands Johnson, Louie Kelcher. 3 of those players would win Superbowls with the Niners. San Diego does not even have a football team. Flops!
all the five superbowl 49er teams had something deferent bot it was special that's why they were so dominate they just never flinched especially having George siefert and bill Walsh to me the coaches that made the nfl which is today which are the best two coaches ever for history of the niners
John Del Van agreed, they talk about Bill Walsh's WCO but no one talks about how George Seifert was actually the architect of Pete Carroll Carroll's cover 3 defense that all of these teams use now. The only difference is the terminology. The Leo is what Carroll calls his work side weak side DE, Seifert called it the Elephant.

It should have been the 49ers vs Steelers. The result would have been the same though. These 49ers were unstoppable this year (except being blown out and the starters benched against the Eagles). The Chargers didn't deserve to be there.
fact is........during 92-96 the niners and cowboys owned the nfl.....but another fact is that dallas had their number 3 our of 4 seasons. this niners team had the offense, but dallas also had a great offense (emmit, aikman, irvin, moose, novacek) but their defense was legendary.....lett, tolbert, haley, jeffcoat, dixon edwards, nate washington, thomas everett, russel maryland, casillas, darren woodson, larry brown, ken norton jr(who played on this 49er team), deon, issac holt.......they definitely had the edge on sanfran.....3 out of 4 superbowls says it all......... ...and
0:30 "Something strange is going to happen" the only strange thing that happened was that San Diego thought they had a chance hahaha. Niners for life!!
LOL!!! I would criticize that scene every time I watched this highlight reel. "Something strange is going to happen" Me: Yeah, you're going to get blown out from the start!!!
I was so pissed SD beat Pittsburgh cause I felt at least the Steelers would give us an entertaining game. I remember getting my plate of BBQ when the game started and by the time I sat down it was 14-0 and I checked out.. One of the worst SB's ever!!!
Imagine that scenario. The 49ers were 4-0 in Super Bowls at that time. The Steelers were also 4-0 in Super Bowls. The storyline. One team would have more Super Bowl wins than anyone in the NFL. The other would suffer their first Super Bowl loss.
This game was the reason why I became a fan of this team. Steve Young was and will forever be an amazing and legendary quarterback. I truly believe that Jimmy G. is heading down the same path. He will give us our 6th ring. #WINLOSEORTIE #NINERSTILIDIE #QUESTFORSIX #REVENGETOUR 🙌🙌❤❤🏈🏈
Felt great for Steve Young after all those years of being UN fairly compared to Montana. And Junior Seau was the heart of those Chargers teams. As a Jets fan I still get pissed knowing they passed up both him & Emmitt Smith in the 1990 draft for Blair Thomas UGGH
Junior Seau was the most over rated LB of the era if not all time. If you think all 3 of the first 49er TDs were over the middle by mistake, you're wrong. They were sending a message after Junior, who was all talk, said the Niners wouldn't score over the middle. His name was NEVER EVEN CALLED in the game for making a play.
This was one of the best all rounded Super Bowl teams ever from special teams to offensive line to defensive line two special teams when they got Deion Sanders that was the final piece of their puzzle you just felt so bad for San Diego cuz you know they did not stand a chance they got in a lucky Pittsburgh Steelers would have gotten the same treatment but I think they would have lost even more because Neil O'Donnell was their quarterback and we all know what magic he can do
Biggest mismatch in Super Bowl history! The 94 49ers were one of the best teams to play in a Super Bowl, while the 94 Chargers were one of the worst. Going into the playoffs that year I had the Chargers as the weakest team in the tournament. How they beat both Miami and Pittsburgh is a mystery to me because I didn't think that the Chargers had a chance to win either game. But I knew that they had no chance against the 49ers and this time I was right! This game was over quickly!
We finally make it to Superbowl 94', it's against Greatest NFL Team Ever.👎 Few years later 98' Padres make WorldSeries.. We lose 4 straight to Best MLB team ever, the "114 win" Yankees. Still Pissed Off.
The 1994 Chargers are also remembered for tragedy in the form of numerous untimely deaths, as eight of the players from that 1994 squad have died prematurely since that time, all by the age of 44. It is part of a supposed locally infamous curse in the San Diego area, involving its sports teams. June 19, 1995 - Linebacker David Griggs died in a car accident when his vehicle slid off a ramp on Florida's Turnpike, linking to three roads just west of Fort Lauderdale and subsequently slammed into a pole, he was 28 years old. May 11, 1996 - Running back Rodney Culver and his wife Karen were among the 110 people (105 passengers, 5 crew members) aboard ValuJet Flight 592 when it crashed into the Florida Everglades, killing everyone aboard. He was 26 years old.[3] July 21, 1998 - Linebacker Doug Miller died after being struck twice by lightning during a thunderstorm while camping in Colorado. He was 29 years old.[4] May 11, 2008 - Center Curtis Whitley died of a drug overdose. His body was discovered by sheriff deputies in his trailer home in Fort Stockton, Texas, just one day after his 39th birthday. One of the drugs he was known to use was Crystal methamphetamine.[5] October 15, 2008 - Defensive end Chris Mims was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment by police officers conducting a welfare check. The most likely cause of death was cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart since he weighed 456 pounds or 207 kilograms when he died. He was 38 years old.[6][7] February 26, 2011 - Defensive tackle Shawn Lee died from a cardiac arrest resulting from double pneumonia. Lee had been suffering from diabetes for years prior to his death. He was 44 years old.[8] December 8, 2011 - Linebacker Lewis Bush died from an apparent heart attack, just six days after his 42nd birthday.[9] May 2, 2012 - Linebacker Junior Seau died in his home in Oceanside, California. Seau was discovered already lifeless by his girlfriend. His death was likely a suicide since a self-inflicted gunshot wound was apparent to the chest. He was 43 years old
I was so not excited for the Super Bowl I was looking more for the commercials you knew this was going to be an onslaught San Diego just did not look right even being in Joe Robbie Stadium or having their team name painted in the endzone none of it felt right you knew they were going to get an ass whooping greetings from Buffalo New York
With the NFL rules in today's game you would think Steve Young 6 TD passes & the 75 points combined by both teams which is Super Bowl records would of been shattered by now.
Although, no one expected it at the time, this was actually the Swan Song for the NFC's domination. With the exception of the Redskin loss to the Raiders and the 2nd Bengal loss in XXIII, from SB XVI thru and including this one, the NFC won by dominating the O and D lines, sometimes even with inferior skill players (Hostetler, Rypien, Timmy Smith). I believe even in this SB, had Humphries played for the 9ers and Young for the Chargers, while the score would have been closer, the 49ers would still have won, as their supporting cast was so much better (the O and D lines, Rice, Watters, Taylor). I'll grant xxiii was an exception. The 49ers did not dominate in that game and had the QBs been reversed (Montana for Esiason) the 9ers would have lost. That was in contrast to the first Bengals loss where Anderson was a worthy QB, but the Bengals were not really in contention (they never had the lead and only threatened once with their 2nd TD) and only make the final score under 7 with a TD in garbage time . . . While the NFC would win 2 more Super Bowls, they were not of the same dominating character. They won mostly because they had the better QBs, and had to rely on the other teams mistakes (O'Donnell) or special teams play (Howard). That is, while previous NFC teams forced great players (Elway, Kelly, Marino, Thurman Thomas) into mistakes, the Cowboys in xxx won more because of O'Donnell's incompetence compared to Aikman than because of forced errors. While numerous times during their domination, the NFC teams won despite their own special teams mistakes or flat being outplayed on special teams, the Packers had to rely on special teams to win in xxxi. . . . Certainly, in xxx and xxxi, if the QBs were reversed, or the Steelers or Patriots had their future QBs, the scores would have been reversed. . .
Sadder than this SB loss for the Chargers was that 6-7 of their players this day died prematurely, one of them hit by lightning twice. Another ate himself to death and Junior Seau committed suicide.Think a running back died in an Everglades plane crash too.
Nine have died. •David Griggs, LB, 1995 - car accident just months after this game •Rodney Culver, RB, 1996 - commercial plane crash •Doug Miller, LB, 1998 - struck by lightning TWICE on a camping trip •Curtis Whitley, OL, 2008 - drug overdose •Chris Mims, DE, 2008 - cardiac arrest; weighed 456 pounds and was on disability at the time of his death •Shawn Lee, DT, 2011 - cardiac arrest resulting from double pneumonia; had been diabetic for years •Lewis Bush, LB, 2011 - heart attack •Junior Seau, LB, 2012 - suicide; was suffering from PTE •Courtney Hall, C, 2021 - cause of death evidently not announced, but at least he made it to 50, unlike the others.
This 1994 49ers team was loaded on offense most people say their 89 team was their best but this team was averaging 31 points a game and they drown everyone in the playoffs The Bears, Cowboys and then the Trashing of the Chargers in Superbowl 29
@12:05, What would Bill Walsh have said to his players under the same circumstances ? Bill would have lie down in the locker room floor with his head propped up against a bean-bag. As the anxious players look on, Bill would say calmly and with confidence: we’ll beat them.
