Super Burnout Review (Atari Jaguar) 

I love this game. I still throw it in and play from time to time. It's like Super Hang-on but way better.

Great review! This is a great game, I appreciate your passion for it! Definitely a must-have for the Jaguar. And I'm glad at ~1:44 - 1:46 you showed that downhill right-to-left turn on the Australia track (if I remember right). It's a thrilling corner, one of my favorites from the game. I only wish they had done more with elevation changes on the courses, but nonetheless, it's still awesome! Again, excellent video! :)

I have been dreaming of owning this game for almost two years since this review came out. Having previously owned a Jaguar I sadly missed this title. I have now since obtained a jaguar with this game. I think this is the funnest and best motorcycle racing game I have ever played, and that includes the motto GP series of current gen consoles. The best way I can think to describe it, would be Super Hang on ( on steroids ). Without your review I would have never owned this gem. Thank you!

Atari Jaguar could of been the American equivalent of the Japanese NeoGeo.

this game is awesome for sure. its tough at first but once you learn the tracks its a lot of fun.

@KANGAshawn I believe Virtual eXperience developed Val D'Isere Skiing and Snowboarding, with Shen Technologies having nothing to do with it. After Super Burnout the Shen guys started working on a Jag Shmup that would eventually be canceled in the wake of Atari's demise. I still need to finish Val D'Isere, I've been stuck on it for years.

Uhhhm, Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge on the Amiga had a great sense of speed and depth as well.

Really looks spot on for an Arcade title, Go Jag! I don't think there were the developers with enough vision to make more games of this quality on the Jag.

I used to rent it all the time too. By around 2000 or so I ended up buying it.. there are a couple good games for it, but as a collector I needed it.

I definitely want this game for my Jag. Looks awesome.

You said this video would be out by the time I listened to the last podcast! Why the delay? Nonetheless good video, its crazy what kind of 3D effects were pushed onto these two dimensional systems...

The motorcycle sprites on this game look kinda similar to the Namco arcade bike game, Suzuka 8 hours.

@KevinCali24 Also well said! Super Burnout, Atari Karts, and Rayman would have been AWESOME in 1993, or even 1994. But by 1995, the press (and gamers) wanted 3D and Atari just didn't have the software to deliver. However, now that time has passed, these old 2D titles stand the test of time far better than the early 3D games.

@VKWhyte The tracks seem to be loosely based off real race tracks, and seems to pick the countries with the best race-track pedigree. If I ever make a game, I'll definitely put Bulgaria in it!

Rod Rash would have been amazing on the Jaguar

I just started playing my Jaguar. I have 40 games for it. The first game I tried was Super Burnout because of your review. This is a very fun and well made game. Thanks for doing a review for it or I might have passed it by. I think I've meet you before at the MGC in Brookfield or the VGS in Illinois. I'm going again this year. I hope I run into you. I like your videos and have watched most of them. Keep gaming.

My favorite racer on the Jag. Wasnt Val D'Isere another title they did for the Jaguar? I play the crud out of both games!

Great game but it's missing the fighting from Road Rash and the Damage and Time Chase modes from Hang On. To have every mode in one motorbike game would be amazing.

@niceandgames Yeah, I agree! I was trying to get as much elevation change footage as I could in my video, but most of the tracks don't have those extreme changes. This is such a wonderful game, it's almost a shame it's on an obscure console with no chance for a re-release on a compilation. Thanks for watching!

Very good....nice to see some "decent" Jag titles.

If you like racing games you should enjoy this one, it's pretty good! There are a few other gems on the Jag as well, though most of the good games are overpriced (Atari Karts, Rayman, and Tempest 2000 being my faves).

@OwtDaftUK Super Burnout looks and sounds infinitely better than the Genesis Road Rash games. Game play wise, they are different beasts and I enjoy them both quite a bit.

@wrestletube1 I kind of like the pure racing aspect of the game. It makes it feel more sim-like to me and stops it from feeling like a rip off of other titles of the time. It definitely stands well next to Hang On and Road Rash. Each are great in their own way. Thanks for watching!

I think it's amazing how sprites stand the test of time. I'm looking at getting a Jaguar soon and definitely want this. Nearly 20 years old now and still a beautiful game. Look at most of the early games for the ps1 now in comparison. The early 3d textured polygons look horrific now but sprites are just as great as ever. This game reminds me a bit of Final Freeway 2 on android (albeit with cars instead) with the ultra smooth framerate and abundance of roadside scenery. So much fun!

I just dug out my jaguar from storage this last week and I have a total of 20 games for the system which is probably at leats 1/2 of what they made for the system. I Didn't even remember I had this game! I am excited to take a run through it. From what i remember about playing Jaguar back when I first got it I absolutely loved Doom and Wolfenstein 3D

@KANGAshawn You've gotten farther than I have :D I need to revisit that one, and take a second look at what all those hidden items do.

Yeah they are things that this look better like framerate and it's not as pixelated. but with road rash much more is going on with other riders and cars and you go up and down more.

@implantgames I agree with you about this sounding better many mega drive games sounded pritty poor, but I persnally think road rash looks better.

I really like how the tracks are reasonable in length, and I'd advise setting the number of laps to two, keeping the races short and sweet. For two players there's a split-screen mode that plays remarkably well. Super Burnout's voice samples are crisp, and the music is actually very pleasant

@implantgames Ya for sure Super Burnout is a killer 2d / 3d sprite game. I like it and Ridge Racer about equally now, actually. :) Probably even giving the edge to Super Burnout because it has so many more tracks.

The Road Rash games on the mega drive look far better and far more fun IMO.

Can you confirm if it has a splitscreen mode for versus?

@implantgames oh ya...there are good games like alien V predator, raiden, doom, tempest 2000, and wolfenstien 3d. Theres even some mario kart type game. BTW, I ordered a copy of Neo Nectaris (Pc engine super cd). It includes original military madness and the sequel with kick ass CD music. Also got myself Contra III, Ecco tides of time, and Ranger X (very underrated).

I remember in late 1995, I had bought a playstation and ridge racer and my friend still had a jaguar and brought Super Burnout over, it was pretty cool but to be honest Ridge Racer was more impressive to me at the time. I guess I saw this game as looking a bit dated with the sprite graphics compared to the awesome 3d Ridge Racer. Super Burnout would have gotten a lot more notice if it had been released a year earlier or so, but that can be said about everything Atari Jaguar, too little too late.

You can get a Jag for around $70. Not too bad... but, I'm looking for the Jag CD and that thing is crazy expensive.

There are far worse systems than the Jaguar in terms of quantity of good games. Like the Super Grafx, or even the Virtual Boy.

I think the praise for this game is a TAD overboard...but I would agree that is is, by far, the best racer on the Jaguar. That much, isn't up for debate.

I don't know about that. Super Grafx didn't have enough games to even be compared, and the Virtual Boy is in the same boat. Most of the games on the Jaguar are complete garbage whereas the VB is actually fun. My favorite game on the Jaguar by far is Tempest 2000, but I will have to give this one a try as well.

@123doomdoom Raiden is a top 5 Jag game for me as well, miles ahead of the Genesis/SNES version as well. The kart-style game is Atari Karts, which i also love (I did a time attack vid a few months ago) though I seem to be in the minority on that one. Perhaps I have a bias towards racing games.... I'm jealous of your PCE :)

While Super Burnout is a fantastic game too be sure it's not the best Jaguar game in existence. That has to go to AVP, Doom, Iron Soldier and or Wolfenstein 3d. I wish more developers developed super scalers on the Jaguar. You know at one time Sega had to pay royalties to Atari and give them permission to make...I want too say 7 Sega games. Can you imagine Afterburner, Space Harrier 1 or 2, Hang On, Power Drift, Outrun 1 or 2, and Rad Mobile on the Jaguar?! That would have been a match made in heaven and it wasn't as if Sega did much with them. During the days of the 32X and Saturn they let some of their best games languish without any home conversions. Oh and the Jaguar didn't hit in 1995...it was here in 1994 and it blew everything else away.
