I love so much that the microphone pics up the desperate clenching and straining of the controller as they play through the stressful parts - Brings back that feeling of playing through a difficult game on the SNES with your childhood friends, and the stress and intensity when you made it far. It's a feeling modern games; full of autosaves, beginner gameplay mechanics, and unlimited internet walkthroughs, rarely reproduce.
@Max_Payn3
@Max_Payn3 2 года назад
That’s why I and so many other people love dark souls (and other from soft games like Sekiro and Bloodborne) because they actually capture those elements and that vibe, but with enough modern elements to be something new.

Hey James or Mike, how about you guys play "Masters of Darkness" on the Sega Master System. Its Sega's answer to Castlevania. It came out on the Game Gear also. I'd like to hear what you guys gotta say while playing it.
@samuellopes3935
@samuellopes3935 9 лет назад
Kaiser Jose I also wanted them to play that game, but I've seen their collection list on their site and it seems that they don't have the game yet. At least, the Master System version. Seeing as both of them like Castlevania, they definitely should get their hands on that game.

Beating a boss and dying at the same time, the worst feeling ever
@HunterX57
@HunterX57 9 лет назад
It's worse in certain megaman games where you don't become invulnerable after killing the boss, but the game still freezes your inputs as soon as it dies forcing you to stand in the way of an oncoming attack and die to it.

Not as bad as a Double KO in any fighting game (particularly Street Fighter)
@HunterX57
@HunterX57 9 лет назад
esmooth919 As long as you aren't down a round, that usually leads to a sudden death round, or another chance. At least in your standard versus/arcade modes. It sucks to high heaven in survival mode runs though.
@Pichustrikesback
@Pichustrikesback 9 лет назад
esmooth919 worst than that was when in the slow motion ending hit both are apparently KO but then your opponent had like zero energy left but stands up again.

A true classic, a gem of the snes era. I remember getting this game for Christmas back in 1991. I consider this game to be a masterpiece in many more ways than one to a point where I and many others consider it legendary. One of the best games ever made, for sure. It blew my socks off -- fond memories and good times

Part one to me is the best, but only because it has heavy Nostalgia with it. I was around 5 and my father came home late from work, I was playing Super Mario Bros as it was the only game I had. He came into the room and surprised me and my brothers with 3 games, second hand of course, we weren't the richest family growing up. Along the games were ExciteBike, Thundercade, and Castlevania. I went ape shit like any 5 year old would and popped that sucker in and played for hours. I never got passed the 3rd stage until recently when I finally beat that game. I was never a fan of the RPG style castlevanias, CV4 is a damn good game and I enjoyed that one too. I'm still trying to get ahold of all the castlevanias I missed out on the N64 titles and SEGA titles.

I generally don't like "Let's Play" videos, but your series is really really fun to watch, two old pals talking about anything they like, playing video games is revive very good memories. This episode, I think, is my favorite until now, the nostalgia, the excitement and the joy of you two playing this game of your childhood and college years is pretty genuine. Thanks for this :)

Got this game for my 21st birthday a few months ago. My dad was gracious enough to buy it for me when we were at our local game store. Still one of the best games I have for the system. I got really good at it playing it on an emulator and I finally managed to beat it once I got it on the cartridge. It really helps when you're playing with an actual controller as opposed to a keyboard, as you can more easily activate the special weapons. The controls also seem more fluent on the SNES as well. It has great replay value as well, especially with the hard mode added at the end of the game. I'll keep playing this one until I stop breathing.

I'm gonna start calling you two the Cardiac Kids, because you find ways to make boss battles very close-- and very exciting to watch as a viewer. That final 1-2 combo of Death and Dracula will test the patience of a lot of players; I remember many attempts, staying up late at night, trying to take both down... until I figured out movement and attack patterns and learned to counterattack. I still struggle a bit with both bosses to this day, but years (and years) of experience do serve me well when I play through the game every year. I finish in one sitting, usually using a handful of continues along the way. Like James, I consider Super Castlevania IV to be the best of the series. Symphony of the Night is a close second. I spent TONS of time playing Super Castlevania IV just after release; I also taped the soundtrack to listen to in my car, thanks to having my SNES sound output through my stereo. There's just something about the direct approach that this game is, rather than the combination of genres that Symphony of the Night is. It's pure action, with little item management or character-building to interfere; not that either or both of these things is bad, but the lack of them here makes the game more pure, in my eyes. I'd love to see you take either of the PlayStation 2 Castlevanias for a spin, if only to see and hear what your responses might be. They are definitely flawed games, but I personally think both get a bit too much hate from the community at large. Looking forward to next week, guys; thanks for keeping these video coming. I really enjoy them.

I got the NES Action Set in 1989 at the age of 7. Maybe 2 days later, my uncle and aunt got my California Games. Maybe a month later, my mom got me Super Mario Bros. 3. Those 3 games were so awesome. Honestly, I only picked out 4 NES games myself out of the 18 I had from 1989-1992, Mega Man 2, Zelda I, Adventure Island II, and Bart Vs The Space Mutants. My mother picked out every other NES game for me and they were all awesome games. She really knew how to pick good games like: City Connection, Snake Rattle 'N Roll, Rad Racer II, Super Mario Bros. 2, Wrecking Crew, Rescue Rangers, Adventures in the Magic Kingdom, etc. Real classics.

I may be a complete nut for this, but I always find the rattling and creaking of old school controllers a part of the nostalgic experience when playing retro games. I've always thought it would be a cool feature for re-releases of retro games or emulators to have an option to dub in the rattling and creaking sounds of the buttons when you press them to emulate the sound of the old controllers. Sorta like how some bands add vinyl crackle to their tracks nowadays because people miss the distinct sound I guess :P

Thanksgiving in Dracula's castle sounds like it'd be some shitty cartoon holiday special, that's kinda like the Grinch, where all the townsfolk are getting ready for thanksgiving, and talking about what they're thankful for, but Dracula is being a dick hole and is all like 'myah', but then in the end, he realizes the error of his ways, and invites everyone to eat thanksgiving dinner in his castle. Oh, then kills 'em all in a horrendously savage blood-orgy of destruction, the likes of which have never been seen, gorging himself into chaos.

I really don't understand why people here are hating on Symphony of the night. It quite literally is just as great as Super Castlevania 4 if anything. It literally is the next best thing that came out after 4. Even the art style is somewhat similar. I mean they even took slogra and gaibon sprites from 4. 4 took the standards of how the game should be and sotn expanded on it. I respect and love both

When it comes to Castlevania, I still have my finger on Symphony of the night.

Yeah, I love it too. But when it comes to castlevania before the whole RPG infusion, this one is indeed my favorite as well.

SotN is an amazing game, but a little bit too easy IMO. Aria/Dawn of Sorrow are the best RPG Castlevanias IMO and this one is the best overrall.

@@OcelotDAD , yes. SOTN becomes easier when using the Crissaegrim or Soul Steal or Shield Rod + Iron Shield. If I would play SOTN again, I would avoid the overpowered moves and try the different weapons and techniques instead.

When a game evokes these kind of emotions on the last boss, u just know it's lightning in a bottle, a timeless gem.

SotN has my vote for best. Love that damn game :)

It's definitely the best. James is just viewing this one through nostalgia goggles. Castlevania 1 is also better. I'd say 3 and Bloodlines are even better. Having to swing like Indiana Jones in SC4 was the biggest flaw. There's a reason it never came back.

Most of the Castlevania music from the NES and SNES versions are essentially remixes of each other.....the melody from bloody tears has been redone to death.

LOL I love it when James gets so wrapped up in what he's talking about that he has to pause the game.

Do Bloodline please! For us Genesis owners that did not have a Snes back then! (And it will still fit with the halloween spirit/)

Jame's reaction at 1:13 pretty much sums up the '90s gaming era.

Is it wrong that the end of this game kind of makes me want to cry? There's something about the ending, the music, and everything else - just a really powerful game.

*PROTIP #1:* On downward staircase blocks (like those on Stages 7, 8 and B), you don't need to walk down the staircases. (Save for the last one.) You can simply jump down to the lower platforms. *PROTIP #2:* Attacking bosses in a suicidal manner will (usually) always result in failure.
