A quick review of the uber budget but very capable Retevis RT5 two way VHF/UHF radio, I test the power and audio quality of this great little radio out in my usual test spots.
I have this radio and REALLY like the slightly increased size and rounded contours of the buttons (compared to the UV-5R). Little details like this definitely make it a "standout from the crowd a bit" radio, as you said. I don't like that the LEDs make the sides of the red plastic frame glow; it's not very dense plastic. That looks very, very cheap, but mostly just in the dark. :-) I'd probably buy a black one if I was to re-do this purchase. But yeah, a reasonable buy, hard to go wrong. Thanks for your review!
Yes I noticed the sides glowing too, performance on VHF fro the radio is as good as my FT60, running this radio on a dedicated 2m antenna it performed amazingly well, the stock dual band antennas on all these cheap Chinese radios always work better on UHF than VHF in my expereince.
Yes its a UV5R with a different look however this on VHF is a clear 2 watts more powerful than my other UV5R radios so in terms of power/value for money it's a good buy.
Mine arrived today. It seems to work pretty well. Strangely, mine came with a slightly more substantial spring loaded belt clip rather than the fixed one in your example. Maybe the higher ups at Retevis got enough complaints about it that they changed it?

that's really good for a cheap radio I've seen some baofeng branded ones tht r more expensive but perform worse the audio quality is abit bad does it have a squelch?
What year is this red unit manufactured in? There are newer ones RT-5 with black body but I don't know the difference so I want to stick with the one you have made the review on.
I don't buy from eBay I use Chinese market place sites and arrange searches in order of lowest price first, this radio has appeared at under £15 delivered

Long story short I have a daughter who’s mother makes it very difficult for me to talk to her during the week.. she lives 100 miles away I see her every other weekend but I want to talk to my daughter during the week with out dealing with her mother but I can’t seem to find a 2 way radio that can go that far?? Just for me to talk to her nothing more ??? I feel like I don’t know what I am looking for. Can some one help me???
The only way you can do that is you will have to get an amateur radio license from the government in your country. With the license you can purchase a higher powered two way radio. By the way the party on the other end also needs to be licensed.
You could try an old android phone with zello app, use a data only sim if theres no wifi. its whats known as a Push to Talk over Cellular set up. Goes worldwide, wherever theres internet anyway or cellular reception anyway.
if i wanted to get a long range antennae and a extension cable to route it through my carrier so the new long antennae iSNT coming right out of the radio could you link me the type of cable needed PLZ
You need a dual band VHF-UHF antenna. I suggest one called a J-Pole. It’s easy to mount. The antenna you purchase will determine what type end will be on the coaxial cable. Try purchasing the coax with the antenna end (probably UHF PL-259) The end that will plug into this particular radio is an SMA female. The radio itself is an SMA male.
