The Thamarassery Pass is the Western Ghats mountain road that connects Kozhikode with Wayanad. (Wayanad Pass), Churam is part of the National Highway 766 and is located in Kozhikode district. The dense forest on both sides of the road attracts tourists. This road was built to reach Wayanad on horseback and later became a vehicular road.
Starting from the foothills near Thamarassery in Kozhikode district, this 12 km long road has 9 hairpin bends. By the time you reach Lakkidi in Wayanad district, where this road ends, it reaches about 2,625 feet above sea level. If you look west from the view point at the ninth hairpin bend, you can see the overall sky view of Kozhikode district. Rare sunsets and seas 55 km away. Clouds and fog sometimes obscure the view. The pass is also known as the Interstate Highway to Mysore and Bangalore.
Thamarassery Pass is a part of the Kozhikode Kollagal National Highway 766 which connects Kozhikode and Wayanad districts. This route plays an important role in the industrial, commercial and tourism development of Kerala. This road passes through the Muthanga and Bandipur forest areas.
The Thamarassery Pass Road, [1] Tipu Sultan's military route, was developed by the British. It was the indigenous aborigines who showed the British engineer this way. It is said that a British engineer killed an aboriginal man named Karinthandan, who showed him the way, to gain fame for this invention. The chain tree believed to bind the soul of this adivasi is located at Lakkidi in Wayanad. [2]

പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിലുടനീളം ഇന്ത്യയിലെ കേരളത്തിലെ ഒരു പർവതനിരയാണ് താമരശ്ശെരി ചുരം. പർവതനിരയുടെ മലയാള പദമാണ് "ചുരം". അതിനാൽ ഇതിനെ താമരശ്ശെരി ചുരം എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു.
കോഴിക്കോടിനെ വയനാടുമായി ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്ന പശ്ചിമഘട്ട മലമ്പാതയാണ്‌ താമരശ്ശേരി ചുരം. (വയനാട് ചുരം) , ദേശീയപാത 766-ന്റെ ഭാഗമായ ചുരം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത് കോഴിക്കോട് ജില്ലയിലാണ്. പാതയ്ക്ക് ഇരുവശങ്ങളിലും ഉള്ള ഇടതൂർന്ന വനം വിനോദസഞ്ചാരികളെ ആകർഷിക്കുന്നു. കുതിരസവാരി ചെയ്ത് വയനാട്ടിലെത്താൻ പാകത്തിൽ നിർമിച്ച ഈ പാത പിൽകാലത്തു വാഹനഗതാഗതത്തിനുള്ള പാതയായി മാറുകയായിരുന്നു.
കോഴിക്കോട് ജില്ലയിലെ താമരശ്ശേരിക്കടുത്ത് അടിവാരത്തുനിന്ന് തുടങ്ങുന്ന 12 കിലോമീറ്ററോളം ദൈർഘ്യമുള്ള ഈ വഴിയിൽ കഠിനമായ 9 ഹെയർപിൻ വളവുകളാണുള്ളത്. ഈ പാത അവസാനിക്കുന്ന വയനാട് ജില്ലയിലെ ലക്കിടിയിൽ എത്തുമ്പോഴേക്കും സമുദ്ര നിരപ്പിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 2,625 അടി മുകളിൽ എത്തുന്നു. ഒമ്പതാമത്തെ ഹെയർപിൻ വളവിലെ വ്യൂ പോയന്റിൽ നിന്ന് പടിഞ്ഞാറോട്ട് നോക്കിയാൽ കോഴിക്കോട് ജില്ലയുടെ മൊത്തത്തിലുള്ള ആകാശദൃശ്യം കാണാനാകും. അസ്തമയവും 55 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെയുള്ള കടൽപ്പരപ്പും അപൂർവ്വമായി കാണാം. മേഘങ്ങളും കോടമഞ്ഞും ചിലപ്പോൾ കാഴ്ചയെ മറക്കാറുണ്ട്. മൈസൂരിലേക്കും ബാംഗ്ലൂരിലേക്കുമുള്ള അന്തർസംസ്ഥാന പാതയായും ചുരം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
കോഴിക്കോട് കൊല്ലഗൽ ദേശീയപാത 766 ൽ കോഴിക്കോട് വയനാട് ജില്ലകളെ ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്ന പ്രധാന പാതയിലെ ഭാഗമാണ് താമരശ്ശേരി ചുരം. കേരളത്തിൻറെ വ്യവസായ, വാണിജ്യ, ടുറിസം മുന്നേറ്റങ്ങൾക്ക് ഈ പാതയുടെ പങ്ക് ഏറെയുണ്ട്. മുത്തങ്ങ, ബന്ദിപ്പുർ വനമേഖലയിലൂടെ കടന്നു പോവുന്ന ഈ പാതയ്ക്ക് കർണ്ണാടക വനം ഭാഗത്തു രാത്രി നിരോധനം ഏർപ്പെടുത്തിയതിനാൽ വളരെ ക്രമീകരണങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയും ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകൾ സഹിച്ചുമാണ് കേരളത്തിലേതടക്കം യാത്രക്കാർ കടന്നു പോവുന്നത്.
ടിപ്പു സുൽത്താന്റെ പട്ടാളപ്പാതയായിരുന്ന[1] താമരശ്ശേരി ചുരം റോഡ്, ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരാണ് വികസിപ്പിച്ചത്. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് എഞ്ചിനീയർക്ക് ഈ വഴി കാണിച്ച് കൊടുത്തത് തദ്ദേശീയരായ ആദിവാസികളായിരുന്നു. വഴി കാണിച്ചു കൊടുത്ത കരിന്തണ്ടൻ എന്ന ആദിവാസിയെ ഈ കണ്ടുപിടിത്തത്തിന്റെ ഖ്യാതി സ്വന്തമാക്കുവാനായി ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് എഞ്ചിനീയർ കൊന്നു കളഞ്ഞു എന്നു പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഈ ആദിവാസിയുടെ ആത്മാവിനെ ബന്ധിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ചങ്ങല മരം വയനാട്ടിലെ ലക്കിടിയിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു.[2]
വെള്ളാനകളുടെ നാട് എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിലൂടെ നടൻ കുതിരവട്ടം പപ്പു താമരശ്ശേരി ചുരത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് "താമരശ്ശേരി ചൊരം... അയ്.. മ്മഡെ താമരശ്ശേരി ചൊരന്നേയ് " എന്ന സംഭാഷണം വളരെ പ്രശസ്തമാണ്
