You should have enough space! But really, if it's too small just go bigger. It's also easier for the wood grain to keep itself with bigger pieces.

No I don't do anything special. I live in Sweden so I get Linden. Which is another variety of "bass" as Basswood is only available in the americas. There is also a pretty big difference between air dried bass and kiln dried bass. Air dried takes way longer but is way softer. Maybe you wood was kiln dried.

CORRECTION: Although upon closer inspection, finding that you are using a Sloyd style knife, rather than a Scandi, my recommendation still stands - and, I see that your preferred Russian manufacturer has flatter ground knives for sale, so you aren't limited by any means to the OCCT brand (though LOTS of carvers absolutely love them).

I have indeed heard a ton or great things about OCCT. I love knives but I still only use the same all the time. Indeed one day I might try one. Same thing for Helvie, if I ever get my hand on one.

QS Outdoors & Carvings You’re doing great with what you have so far. You might become an old man before a Helvie becomes available, and it’ll be $$$$$ for sure. Years ago, I bought a tinwhistle/pennywhistle/Irish whistle from the maker John Sindt, for $69 + $3 shipping. Not long after that, word was getting around that his brass whistles were very good, so folks sought them. After awhile, he stopped taking orders as he had a two-year waiting list to take care of. As his product’s popularity grew, so did the price, and now you’d practically have to find and steal one, because nobody is selling theirs. John Sindt was a one man operation, if alive he’s probably in his 80’s - who knows if he’s still making them, one at a time? 😟

Yeah I know that. There are a few Helvie usually for auction at the International Association of Woodcarver and they easily go for 150-200 bucks. It's all fine. S. Belov knives are amazing quality and suits me really well.
