Growing up if we had a cold with or without a cough, my mother would cut up a large yellow onion leaving on the skins and boil it in a pot of water. She would let it boil down until the liquid would look tea like. She would let it cool down so it could be drank and add a little honey. It would break up the congestion in no time. It works great! I still do it today and I am 62 years young.

That's amazing. I am going to try that. My mom made onion poultices for my sister who had tonsillitis a lot. Or mustard poultice. My mom also made potato-onion soup with white russet potatoes (small diced) and a Spanish onion (peeled and sliced or diced) and cooked down until the potatoes and onions were broken down and made a thick broth. I don't know if the potato had a medicinal component to it? Or maybe it was protecting the stomach? Or for flavor? I don't know why the potatoes. Mother fed us that if we had a cold. When we got into high school she just gave us raw slice of onion for a cold or sore throat. Seriously one slice of onion eaten raw, will stop a cold in its tracks! I eventually learned that onions are natural sulfur

I was raised by my Grandparents who were both born in the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) in 1899. Grandma knew every root, leaf, berry, bark, and plant found in the wild & concoct ointments, salves, tinctures, and teas for whatever ailed ya. She'd use a salve she made from crushed horseradish, crushed ginger root, crushed wild onions, and honey comb to rub on your chest, then cover with a warm towel for congestion. It always worked

I learned that putting a slice of onion or chopped onion on the bottom of one’s feet immediately relieves nasal congestion. It is amazing. I could tell the difference in a minute. Put slice or chopped onion in a plastic grocery bag or an envelope made of cloth. Place your foot directly on the onion, wrap around top of foot, place sock on top of that. Go about your day as normal, walking on the onion.

YES! Growing up we would get this done when we would be so sick. My dad would cook down onions in butter enough to make 2 large pouches, one for the chest and one for the middle of our backs. and it needed to be as hot as we could stand it! then we would have a large towel wrapped around our tourso to keep the pouches in place and we would sleep with this all night long. Smells really nasty by morning. It does work though, it would really clear up a lot of that congestion.

My mum used to put cut up onions wrapped in a thin scarf around our neck when my brother or I had a cold. She tied it loosely and we slept with it for the night. Sometimes the scarf came off, but I just kept it close to me while falling asleep again. Worked very well too. (We're from Belgium, btw. I don't know if it's a big tradition here. It's just something she learned from her mum, as she did from hers, etc.)

Yes that’s a old gypsy Roman trick, it works best on the sole of the foot inside a sock, soles absorb it into the body faster. You can also heat a slice of onion and roll it into a funnel to stick in your ear canal, it will siphon out an ear infection in a few min.

Fun fact about boiling down onions: A friend of mine worked in a flavour factory which sold super-condensed flavors to companies. Essentially, according to him, they'd reduce down a whole shipping container load of onions to a bottle of onion flavouring. Once drop of it would be enough to add to an entire vat of product that the food company were making. But here's the most interesting part: He said it's so condensed that if you took a whiff (small) of it, it could kill you - extremely dangerous LOL

I sell mustard seed baby pillows - an Indian tradition that prevents and remedies flat spots in infants. One of the reason mustard seeds are used(other than coz they are so tiny and make the pillow so pliable) is that it is supposed to help with congestion....I didn't connect the dots till yesterday. Maybe sleeping on the mustard seed pillow releases tiny doses of the spice? Anyway, thank you for sharing your remedies with us! I forgot something, I just found out about a new plant ally to grow, gynostemma. How I've never heard about this plant before today I have no idea. Start growing this little lady as soon as possible. VitaJing just did another video about it and included study links in the description. It's an invasive perrineal plant from Tibet and China but it's been Americanized and grows here just fine. You can make a tea from it fresh or dried and it's leaves are more powerful than the ginseng root, no joke. It's one of those awesome plants that is such a giver evidently. What caught my attention was how adaptive for your system it is. Our bodies evidently use it for almost all major functions and it won't create a cytokine storm like elderberry when working with the immune system. It's used most frequently with cancer patients.

Thank you! Love so many of your demonstrations. They are calm and cheerful and orderly---- and get efficiently to the point. I know what you are saying about certain onions being so acrid--- while I generally try to ameliorate the effects if I'm chopping a lot up, I also think they are good at drawing tears which might have a good effect of cleansing the eyes. Not a prolonged tearing, but a shortish bout of tears.....On another note: learned the salt pickling of lemons from another of your excellent demos...Adds such a great taste to so many meals. Thanks for that one too! And, finally, a lot of the posters below had some very helpful remarks.

When our 1 year old son had a persistent fever, my husband who is from S. Carolina suggested putting onions on him. So we cut some onions, out them on his bare chest and abdomen and wrapped him in a hand towel. We checked him a few hours later and he was cool where the onions were, but hot everywhere else. When we took the onions off he immediately got feverish all over again. We ended up taking him to the hospital ER. Turns out he had an ear infection.

Crying while cutting onions? You need a very sharp knife. Yours sounds dull and will squish the onion cells releasing waaay more juice and vapours than a sharp knife. Also, if you can stand more upright or maybe use a small fan so the vapours don't even get to your eyes. I usually wear glasses, but not when I cut onions. I find any vapours get trapped behind the lenses making the situation worse. What's the difference? Glasses off or tearing, stinging eyes ? - can't see well either way. One more tip; flush your eyes with cold, running water if the vapours really sting until the irritation subsides. I've learned some of these things from my Mum and some through experience cooking for my family and others for about 30 years. Thanks for what you do and all the extremely valuable information you share. Much of that info and techniques for better, healthier food are disappearing from collective memory in favour of quicker, easier store-bought, chemically poisoned garbage. Cheers and prayers to you from northern Alberta, Canada.

When cutting up an onion, wet a paper towel & place it beside the cutting board to absorb fumes. Saw this done on another cooking channel & it seemed to work.

You can make yourself a small pillow case to put your onions in. Sew it with a flap so that the onions won’t fall off. I am making one for my family.

4:28, I was told by someone that I might have 'long covid', and when I cough I oftentimes sound like I've got croup, so it feels tight in my chest and am trying to use stuff people recommend, one I've found that seems to help is flu meds containing Guafenesin and usually about an hour or so later I try to cough as it's begun to loosen a bit, I always thank my lungs because I'm grateful they are trying to clear this problem with me. But when I get sick, 9 times out of 10 it goes straight to my chest!! It can be quite depressing! Thanks to everyone here for sharing their families remedies as well, this is all good info.😁👍💝

You could try Mullen tea, put the Mullen in a quart mason jar. Pour in the boiling water and let it sit for 4 hours. Make sure you strain it through fine filter. Or piece of cheese cloth. What you don't drink that day refrigerate. It'll last a couple days. Best wishes hope this helps.

@@sweetbeep you know , it's odd that I gave that particular method of making Mullen tea. It is not necessary to let it Brew for 4 hours. Although you certainly could. Now I Brew it in one cup for 10 minutes or so. Then strain it into another cup. But you can use a teapot. The most important thing with Mullen, is to use a very fine filter to strain it, and normally I do not drink the tiny bit from the bottom of the cup. Once it has settled. I hope this helps do you feel better.

@@charlesfredrick4789 thanks. Last night I slept with onions on the bottom of my foot and it helped. But I am interested in mullein as well and someone on FB said they use it for their pulmonary fibrosis, which is usually a deadly condition. Do you get your mullein from the health food store?

CAROLYN THE REMEDY TO NOT CRY WHILE CUTTING ONIONS!! - HONEST IT REALLY WORKS!! WHEN CUTTING ANY ONION, DO NOT BEATHE THROUGH YOUR NOSE AT ALL! KEEP BEATHING THROUGH YOUR MOUTH THE WHOLE TIME... I watched Rachel Ray & she never cries when cutting an onion, and she was talking or kept her mouth open the entire time while cutting onion. I use that method all the time while cutting my very strong yellow onions now and my eyes NEVER tear up!! Remember!! You CANNOT even sniff through your nose... Try it and please come back and tell it on a special video for everyone. Thanks.. Btw.... I know most ppl sleep with their head raised but from my own personal experience I have noticed that if I have a chest congestion, the best way for me to sleep, is make sure my head is LOWER THAN my chest, wrap up your body really warm, actually getting to the point of breaking a sweat if possible, and keep a lined trash can near my bed, because the warmer I can get my body, causes the congestion to actually slide up toward my throat and I am able to hack it out quicker... works great !!

I live by Old Order Amish and go into the home of Swartzentruber Amish 2xs a week. They do things differently, then my mind can understand(I don't understand their ways). I am sure they wouldn't think of this as " natural remedies" , not witchcraft. Some even have rings/slices of onions above some of their door frames ;)

My grandmother would take a onion and chop it up, and put in cast iron frying pan with lard and cook it until it was translucent and she let it cool off then she would smear it on our chest, I never knew if it was the smell or the onion but it worked. Onion chopped really fine on a bee sting too. Meat tenderize on Mosquito bites and jelly fish stings. I never heard of using salt with an onion but I guess you use what you have on hand.

Gran used to sew the cloth into a slip on cover/encasing sort of like those frequently seen these days on little pillows -- with the slot that has the flap overlap (not sure how to describe it) you turn inside out stuff the pillow in or take it out then closes when turn it back right side out for large poultices and just made draw string bags for smaller ones.

Carolyn, donʻt cut off the pointy end and you will never cry... cut off the root end and take off the peel. cut the onion in half length wise - through the pointy end... then lay the cut end down, and slice the onion to the thickness you want the dice, leaving the slices together and cut the pointy end last (discard after the last cut). Rotate the sliced onion 90 degrees and make the second set of slices... e voila, diced onion, with no tears ;o)

So there are no Amish communities where I am, yet my elderly friend ALWAYS insists I sniff onions when I'm feeling a bit off colour. She's part German so I'm wondering if its part of the folk lore from way back then. I prefer menthol myself.

It’s not part of folklore it’s part of natural medicine, everything modern healthcare has developed came from something natural of the earth originally. Allopathic and homeopathic remedies work best when used together, not in argument against the others effect.

WHY THATS AMASING FOR A POLTIS. ! Most congestion when it starts with a sore throat I use ginger root powder on the top of my tongue and hold it to the roof of my mouth for 5 minutes . Works great I guess the starting cold . but would be defenceless against pneumocystis pneumonia water on the lungs . I use Noni juice to stop that but who could find Noni juice during William Thompson's time and your Amish ancestors TIME. Who could find it ???..NO ONE ..! THAMKS ..!

The reason you cry when cutting an onion is you have a dull knife. You must have a very sharp knife and how you use it is also important. Do not push the knife down, but rather smoothly slide it through the onion. Also chewing gum also helps. 😊
