Setup and first trial using Starlink on my Offgrid boat. Lots to consider if you’re planning to use starlink satellite internet on your offgrid setup. The dish uses a decent amount of power, if your system is small you’ll notice the draw on your setup.

dude I was just talking about Starlink last week, been waiting for it to go public so I can get in early with 5-10 grand, thanks for this you're the first person I've seen actually review it although I knew it would be good quality if Musk was involved
@ThomasGrillo
@ThomasGrillo 2 года назад
For marine use, I'd recommend adding a gyrostabilized mount, for the dish. The dish can not react fast enough, to maintain the connection, under wave action. A gyro mount will allow the dish to remain, nearly rock solid, just like the satellite dishes in airliners, and trains. It'll also save the operating life-span, of your dish's motor. You'll still likely consume nearly the same amount of power, but you'll have a more reliable connection. Thanks for the video.
@was100ify
@was100ify 2 года назад
You have a link for a specific mount you have in mind?
@ThomasGrillo
@ThomasGrillo 2 года назад
@@was100ify The only one that comes to mind is one for a GoPro, but if you know someone with CNC milling and machining capabilities, a large enough version could be built to hold a satellite antenna. There are lots of gyro stabilizers on ebay, as well, which can be used to control the mount's motor drives.
@was100ify
@was100ify 2 года назад
@ThomasGrillo my question really is how much pitch and roll is too much? Is this dish locked on a specific satellite and constantly tracking it until it needs to switch to the next one? Say worst case connection bounces in and out. Most marine applications only need to update weather apps or radar. So at worst it would still be better than nothing. My concern with this unit is how resistant to salt spray is it. It's probably not designed for such a harsh environment.
@ThomasGrillo
@ThomasGrillo 2 года назад
@@was100ify Well, if swells are producing pitch, and roll moments greater than 15 degrees, I'd recommend shutting the Gyro sat mount down, and getting on the helm. However, I would think you could design one that could handle at least 45 degrees, depending on how far above the deck house it is. I'd also recommend designing it, so the motors are concealed, inside the arms, and joints, with o-ring seals. The mount needs to me made from aluminum, to prevent corrosion from salt spray. I do know the Starlink system doesn't just latch on to one satellite. It takes data from multiple satellites, as they pass over. Kind of like GPS. Both are in low Earth orbit, and are moving 17500 plus miles per hour, ground track, vs the 0MPH ground track of a geostationary orbiting satellite for conventional coms. Starlink's antenna uses an array of many antennas, which pickup the signals from the many sats that whiz by. If the Starlink antenna dish is on a moving substrate, then it's drive motors have to work overtime, and eventually burn out, trying to track the constellation. Being on a gyrostabilized mount will take the workload off the antenna's motors, and reduce power consumption on the antenna. Still need some power for the gyro mount, though.

I like how he took the time to discuss that it would take somewhere between 50-100watts (minifridge, pc, etc.) I would like to think integrating a smart "home network" might be able to best prioritize power consumption vs up/down speeds. I would wait until Starlink comes with the mobile solution. When you are in a harbour, you probably have 4G or 5G coverage anyway, and I do not think you can move like a mobile between cells yet. They have a new squared antenna now, and its about 50% lighter than "Dishy", probably much the same performance with the similar electronical steered beamforming..

Just for reference, the best I've found before this, KVH VSAT would be about 2400USD a month for 10Gb data at 6Mb/s /2Mbps best possible speed, (4 is typical) with latencies of around 800ms , but with fully gyro stabilised dish that can handle quite rough conditions . Not needed, the dish doesn't track individual satellites. The antenna array is electrically steered, just needs to be in the general direction of the satelite tracks.
@ericbennett2195
@ericbennett2195 2 года назад
@@encoreimages how precise exactly does the alignment need to be? the poster of the original video specifically mentions that latency as well as power usage increases a lot in stormy conditions, which would intuitively read as if the electrical steering was being engaged far more frequently than in non-stormy conditions to counter the tracking problems induced by them. It might well be that a gimbal wouldn't be enough to offset this but if it were it could both fix the mentioned latency as well as energy consumption issue.

Good news this is purely a business model protocol and as long as you are in coverage nothing to stop you technically. StarLink are going to come out with a maritime version in the near future it will probably be more expensive. This will take some time because it will require the next generation of satellite's to be launched. These will be equipped with lasers to allow them to communicate satellite to satellite so even if you are in the middle of the ocean they can just pass on your signal until it can get to one in range of a ground station.

Hey, dude. Keep in mind those 160 Mbits are megabits. Divide by 8 bits per byte to get your actual megabytes per second DL speed. Your boat is really rockin' now! 😎
@court2379
@court2379 2 года назад
He said it was reporting in megabytes. Multiply by 8 to compare to the typical megabits...
@lenwhatever4187
@lenwhatever4187 2 года назад
Actually 10 is probably a better multiplier assuming full packets. Bits speed is a raw bit speed (which is why it is used so much) but bytes are what you get after the all the packaging of the packet is removed. This includes the MAC, IPs, any error correction information. The smallest IP packet is 64 bytes... even if you only send one byte of cargo. Now, assuming you are looking at an https site also include encryption info. While there are oversized packets available, most networks have at least one router/server that has a max size of 1500 bytes, meaning that almost nobody bothers to even try to send larger packets. Add to this extra header information your down/up load sw uses to keep track of itself and traffic it sends in the opposite direction (and waits for) to acknowledge or ask for resend and the idea that 8 bits = 1 byte is just not realistic.
@court2379
@court2379 2 года назад
@@lenwhatever4187 Interesting point. 8 bits to a byte is factual, but your statements introduce the the real world transfer complexities. I guess my question would then be, is the speed test data measuring the results after overhead and not the total data sent? Seems you would really want both. One showing the actual amount of data that passed to understand the connection throughput, and another showing the useful user data that passed. The difference giving an efficiency number that accounts for packet loss and overhead, as well as true user performance.
@lenwhatever4187
@lenwhatever4187 2 года назад
@@court2379 any software measuring transfer speed, only measures the cargo speed. The OS network stack has already removed packaging. Depending on the SW used, (ie. the browser's shown speed) the encryption overhead has probably also been removed. Bit speed is always the speed bits move in any one packet but I suspect starlink does not really allow the user to see that. I think you will find the the up/down link protocol is not any standard that is documented outside of starlink. IP traffic in and out but who knows what in between. So in this case, 8 bits does not really = 1 byte. They really are measuring or meaning two very different things. Anytime _bits_ is used, it is talking about the physical rate the transmission changes from 1 to 0s but with _bytes_ it is always talking about unpacked data. Bits is like carrier frequency (not the same thing but similar), bytes includes the whole data path including the slowest server in the path.

I took my dish on a 6 month trip with my RV and found that i could only keep it connected from 5 pm to 11 pm each day. My RV is set up with 480 watts of solar and 400 amp/hrs of lithium. I have a propane fridge but use induction hot plate and instapot, and microwave, coffee maker. The dish worked flawlessly in all areas where there was coverage from starlink and I found a few places where upon powering up the message on the app stated that network capacity is already full, move location and try again. That of course will change as more satellites are launched. Average power consumption is about 500 watts at 12 volts, 12C-45C .

Watt hours the new standard? Watt hours has always been the standard for understanding energy consumption. Just because folks with a lack if understanding the difference between amps or watts doesn’t make either the old or new standard. Also to work properly on a boat that will leave the marina(power or sail) the dish will always have to move in order to tune into a satellite. So a satellite dish for a mobile application will always have moving parts to allow it to tune in on a satellite. Your vid is great in showing the ease of setup and showing the dish self tune to a satellite!

Hi, Cool video! Should be interesting when they actually come up with mobile dish solutions. Just wanted to mention a bit of an adjustment to what You said. So the transfer rate is still in megabits (Mbps) not megabytes (MBps). This has been confusing to me as well. If you want to convert your megabits to megabytes just divide your megabits by 8 and that will give you the Megabyte transfer rate. Network speeds have traditionally been measured in bits I guess probably because they were born from dialup copper connections. If anyone is as old as me You will remember things like AOL and that old Audible handshake our modems used to make. So while StarLink is blazingly fast it’s still no comparison to the internal transfer rates of Your computer. I hope this is helpful :) Take care and enjoy StarLink. We are also lucky to have dishie and enjoying the freedom of streaming and no data caps! Had ViaSat b4. They are the best for Geo Sat service, but too overloaded and the latency barely works for WiFi calls…

So if your boat is made out of fibreglass and you have a more secure place inside away from thunderstorms, high winds and all that then you could try and place it there and see how that works for you. I can't test it myself but am curious. Obviously I am only referring to fibreglass and not wood or especially not metals.

Most marinas have dockside power, cable / internet and in the past phone. I could see the concern about battery power if you're in the middle of the water boating assuming your boat doesn't have a generator but certainly not docked??!

Do live on the boat in the winter? I live in northern lower Michigan and I think it is too cold here.

Just turn it off when going to bed or when there it is windy/stormy, guess these are moment you have other things to do then being on the computer. would a kind of gyroscope help to keep the satilite more stable? Like they did with a compass?

Hi Simon, first than all thank you for the video, I'm planning to purchase a starlink antena for a boat to replace a KNS dome which is much much more expensive and really poor bandwidth, So, the most important question is, when the boat has some slight movement, does it affect the internet link? if it just interrupt for a while then recovers by itself after it would be just ok, of course if the boat is in a bad whether condition it would not work well (in that case a dome would not be working either), please comment

I'm still waiting for my Starlink to arrive. I'm a bit nervous about possible lost connection, and the installation process. I hope it comes with more than that single sheet of instructions😬

I have seen many RU-vid channels cover star link and they have all said it is really easy. I think you only have to do is plug it in. Setup the dish…

It's still in Beta testing phase so lower speeds and connection drops are to be expected, but installation is just plugging in cables and picking a spot for the antenna to see enough sky, the app even helps with that. The more satellites SpaceX shoots up (latest batch launched last week) the better the connection and once all sats are laser linked with version 2.0 (planned to be launched with Starship) speeds get better as well.

Wow haven't watched your channel in a while, you seem have come a long way. Cheers! Would Starlink also be a viable option if you were moving your boat a lot?

Starlink is infamously behind schedule. How long did you have to wait to get your equipment?

Isn't the new dish version supposed to consume quite a bit less energy? The square one, I mean

It looks like you are using Starlink while tied up at the dock. Have you tried it while swinging at anchor somewhere? I'd expect that the swinging would be too extreme for the dish to be continually realigning. Also, I'm guessing that you would have to change or identify your location when you move?

If you're getting 100Mbps or so, it's probably the wifi limit. If you hook up your laptop to the ethernet port, you should get a bit faster than the 100Mbps. (at least that's what I've found - but it's on my house, not a boat).
