I personally like the fact that Game Boy isn't just green, but blank space is yellowish olive-green, and colors get closer to blue the darker they are. This gives it a very distinct look.
@kevin-bf4ww

interesting hack, but, i really hate it in all the games you've got footage of a gameboy there the 'white' is like a beige tan and then it folds through three shades of desaturated greens til its almost black as a kid who grew up with a stock standard gb-original and never got any fancy pocket or colour upgrades: i've never understood the neon green 'recreations' people make for fan-art or emulators online art / emulation palettes featuring the actual palette from like tanbeige to darkdark-notblack-green seem to be very rare and far and few between

Way too saturated green on that method. Honestly the green palettes on the cartridge were fine and probably closer to the brick experience.

The monochrome green reminds me of early PC gaming more than my first experiences with a Game Boy. It just reminds me of gaming on my old Apple IIe with it's monochrome screen (except the GB had much better graphics).

Well, it'd be one thing if the green actually looked like the kind of green that a Gameboy screen has, but this most definitely isn't it. This is the most pure form of green & just does not fit. I also VERY much like the bit of space between the pixels. If they could find a way to accurately re-create that and the way the pixels looked on a bigger screen, then that would be amazing!

It's actually possible to recreate the look you're talking about with shaders in Retroarch.

Would have been neat to split the luma signal and use potentiometers on each to vary the strength of the signal, then plugging each into R, G and B, effectively giving you the ability to fine-tune the green color to not be so saturated.

Someone once told me Game Boy screens didn't used to be so green and blurry, they just decayed over time? Although I distinctly remember them being insanely hard to see in the 90s even. lol. That's why my Game Boy Pocket was such an upgrade.

What a wonderful video this is. I admire the quest to replicate the OG experience on a CRT, and generally love the All Green option (but would probably desaturate it a touch myself). I've recently been loving playing Game Boy on my consumer CRT but instead of using the GC Game Boy Player have found compiling my favourite GB games with a GnuBoy emulator image for Dreamcast the most convenient option. It's accurate and lag-free enough to be a great experience while I'm on a DC kick. Those huge pixels look amazing despite a lack of pallette options. Anyway, great work!

I liked the idea, but to be honest, it hurt my eyes a bit XD. My options for playing Game Boy games is through emulation only. On PC, I tend to set my CRT monitor to 256x192@150Hz and set the emulator for a 1:1 scale. The "blank" scanlines are huge, but I actually prefer it like that. I also play Game Boy games on my Nintendo Wii with component cables on a 29" CRT, using a modified emulator coded by "Extrems", the guy that made Game Boy Interface. His "Enhanced mGBA" seems to have basically the same functions as with Game Boy Interface, but it depends on the mGBA emulator, which currently is not that accurate on the Wii. At least it has very nice options, including the original GBP borders, options for either pixel perfect or "4:3" scaling (guess it's the same case as with the Super Game Boy), 240p, and some other neat options for changing palettes, including GBA color palettes. I go back and forth between green or black and white, but it really depends on the game. Fun fact, I was somewhat forced to play some PlayStation 2 games in black and white XD. By brother had brought over a PS2 for me to play, but father wouldn't let us play using the 20" TV that had a composite input. I had a PS1 at the time, and played games on it using a RF "converter" box on a 14" TV that only had coaxial. Since the PS2 uses the same "AV out" port, we could use the box on the PS2. It worked ok with color when playing PS1, but on the PS2, games tended to automatically set to PAL, maybe because the thing was for "PAL-M" signals, and since the TV didn't support European PAL signals, it would display games in black and white XD. I played a good portion of Resident Evil 4 like that... Good times!

TheDimensioner I’m honestly amazed your graphics card can do 256x192@150hz. My graphics card says it’s lowest res is 640x480@120hz, but I have managed to run other resolutions that it doesn’t say it can do. More importantly, I’m amazed your CRT can do it. Mostly the refresh rate, as that’s madness.
@shortcat

@@justanotheryoutubechannel most CRT monitors can handle 160hz. The lower the resolution the higher refresh rate can be. And you need high enough refresh rate to even create such a low resolution, 320х240 wouldn't work at 60hz on a regular PC monitor.

4:39 Yeah, that palette is the default palette, used for all third-party games (any game not detected as a Nintendo-published game. I can't remember if the SGB does it but I know the GBC boot ROM even goes to the extent of detecting just Nintendo-published regional variants. Such as it will detect only the European versions of Seiken Densetsu/Final Fantasy Adventure/Mystic Quest). I find it funny that in the Collection of Mana for the Switch, that default SGB palette is one of the palette options for the first game in the compilation. It would be like M2 if they offered an option to edit the palette like an actual SGB, but maybe they didn't have time, or other reason to not include a secret option to do that?

I own a SONY Trinitron 27inch CRT and I can turn off/on any color (RGB) using the service menu, but it doesn't look as good as your setup. Using a Wii and Retroarch with Gambatte gives many color palettes (all those that came with the Super Gameboy besides a couple more made by the devs) but they just won't be as green as yours. Yours looks good.

It's worth noting that the screen on an original Game Boy gets more pea-soupy as it ages. While it always uses greens, a fairly new one gives you a better approximation of black and white. I often would use the black and white color palettes in Super Game Boy as I felt it better reflected what the developers were probably going for.

While the setup used to achieve the effect is neat. I do think it is just a bit too niche. I really enjoy the darker green effect rather than just the palette swaps of the Super Game Boy. I have a robust program on my computer that I use to filter out blue light, but I can use to tint my screen any color I want. I tried a similar effect with my favorite game boy games, Rolan's curse 2 and Trip world. I originally played Rolan's curse 2 with an emulator on my phone using a super gameboy palette, but going through my computer definitely gave the game a different feel to it, for the better. Trip world Felt just a bit too busy though. So I don't think my faux green CRT display is a one size fits all solution.

I'm not the biggest fan of the 100% green, mostly because it seems too dark. It doesn't seem like too big of a leap to hack together a box that takes in luma on one side, splits it three ways, and dumps it into all three channels with variable resistors on each. That should allow you to adjust the exact color and give you access to a brighter more yellowy green which would be more accurate to the Game Boy pallette.

This looks nasty all green. The gameboy screen was complete trash but the games were good *in spite* of it. I tolerated the screen, after the SGB came out and then the subsequent models I never looked back.
