Super Jackpot win (1974)

In memory of Geoff Edwards (1932-2014):
This $38,750 Super Jackpot win is from the only existing episode of the original "Jackpot!" in 1974 as most of this run is gone forever. Unlike ABC and CBS, there were no winnings limits on NBC daytime game shows (probably because RCA was their parent company at the time), which has resulted in wins up to $100,000 or more. Nowadays with cash prizes on today's game shows up to or beyond $1 million, those limits are already a thing of the past.
Oh, and who made Geoff Edwards look like a pimp in this clip? It was Lin Bolen, the then-head of daytime programming at NBC who wanted her game show hosts to look "studly" in sharp contrast to Bob Barker, Allen Ludden, Monty Hall, and others (though at one time she had Bill Cullen perm his hair for "Winning Streak").

Background music during the Super Jackpot celebration is the same as the opening theme music of "This Week in Baseball"...Hello there, everybody! This is Mel Allen!

In my senior year of high school (January-June, 1974), I was fortunate enough that my classes for the day usually ended at 1:05 P.M. One of my parents would pick me up, drive me home, and I'd arrive by 1:10 P.M. Since "Jackpot!" aired on WJAR in Providence at 1 P.M. local time (I grew up and still live near Boston; the show at the time wasn't carried by any Boston station), I got to see about two-thirds of each show after getting home from school (usually, my Mom would cook hot dogs for me which were ready when I came in and which I'd eat while watching the show). The first day it came on, Mom (R.I.P.) saw the first ten minutes of the first show (before I came in) and told me I'd love it. She was right! It was one of my all-time favorite game shows. How I wish it could be revived in it's original 1974 format, with perhaps one change: Both the "King/Queen Of The Hill" and the contestant posing a Jackpot/Super Jackpot riddle each getting the pot (i.e. if someone correctly answers a Super Jackpot riddle worth $38,750, both the contestant posing the riddle and the contestant answering it each would get $38,750). With the cost of living so much higher today, this move could be affordable for the producers of a revived "Jackpot!" to do.

Fabulous win ... and for the day, it was a big one! Each player got $19,375 (before taxes) and I'll bet they enjoyed every penny of it! Rest in peace, Geoff Edwards. You are missed.

There was another clip with the full episode; (0:48) considering it's the same man who shouted "JACKPOT!" at the start of the episode, that must have been one hell of a good omen.

I am guessing once they dispensed with the riddles, the show's days were numbered. Even Geoff himself was said to have claimed, "That's it. We're finished" at the change.

"He's a carpenter and I'm a shepard but we were both in the same line of work. What's our line?" "Astronaut!" Alan Shepard was the first American in space in a sub-orbital flight, Scott Carpenter was the second to fly an orbital flight (after John Glenn). Carpenter was born in Boulder and graduated from CU in Aeronautical Engineering. They were in the original group of what was called the Mercury 7 astronauts.

It was an alternate way to get the Super Jackpot. In this instance (which Geoff said happens once every 10 shows, sometimes more often), it was a straight shot at the S.J.; target number meant nothing here. (It was extremely rare that the last three digits EVER matched the target number.)

@christopherdunne7848
@christopherdunne7848 3 года назад
*Sigh* I will explain again. Geoff mentioned the possibility of a “Super Jackpot” riddle anytime in a period of ten shows, maybe more. The regular Jackpot amount never changed from 735 to 775, even after the hoopla. Pam started a brand new game after the break, and the next riddle amount was added to the 735 (not 775). I watched the show during this time (whenever it wasn’t a school day). Trust me.

It was an alternate way to get the SJ. Geoff said that it happens at least once every ten shows. IMO that target number deal was tough to do, because as I recall, only one member had a riddle whose amount ended in a five. If it were me, I would have made all riddle amounts a multiple of 10, of course in addition to making the target number a multiple of ten also.
