Super Mario 3D All Stars: A Head To Head Comparison 

This is by far the hardest I have ever worked on a video. I started back January, finished in late May, and have been sitting on it all year until I felt the time was right to upload it. I hope you all enjoy! Also yes I just realized that I spelled characters wrong at 9:55. Whoops

I feel like you're not talking about what makes Galaxy so much fun... y'know, the gravity effects. Doing a long jump around an oblong floating planetoid, and orbiting it over and over, or travelling to other orbits, like, man, it's SO much fun.

I just got this game about 2 weeks ago, and the main reason I got it was so I could play Galaxy, but I am amazed with the other games aswell!

I recently played through this collection, getting 100% on all 3 games. In my opinion, I feel that each game was an improvement on the last. I personally rank them as Galaxy > Sunshine > 64, and that's even considering the nostalgia factor that I have for 64.

And to think Rosalina’s storybook was written in one night…

Playing/Seeing Mario 64 for the first time was probably one of the most memorable experiences in my entire childhood so it's really hard to not put it at the top no matter what.

If this included Galaxy 2 and put 64ds this would've been the best collection in gaming. That and putting 64 in 16:9 wide-screen in 1089 and every game in 60fps. In other words if they put in more effort.

Sunshine's single objectives are I think the best way to do it the way is set up plus BLUE COINS EXIST

This is a good video! My personal favorite out of these is Sunshine though. Keep in mind that 3D allstars was my first time playing all 3 of them.

As someone who played (and 100% completed) all the originals during childhood, I congratulate you on accurately analyzing and summarizing the different reasons what makes each of them great! Very entertaining video, and informative for newcomers. Personally, the snappy controls make me come back to Sunshine / Delfino Plaza most, though I have little time to replay Mario nowadays. Don't 100% Sunshine though, completing Mario 64 is much greater of an experience. Galaxy is just epic, but the lack of an interesting hub-world killed post-Luigi replayability for me

I love the three games in Super Mario 3D All-Stars such as Super Mario 64 for Nintendo 64 in 1996, Super Mario Sunshine for Nintendo GameCube in 2002 and Super Mario Galaxy for Nintendo Wii in 2007. 1996+6+5=2007

Princess Peach in Super Mario 64 is like Rosalina in Super Mario Galaxy.

For me, replayability easily goes to 64. While Galaxy has a better reward, 64 has way more incentive to replay it over and over again, considering that, for the most part, you’re able to get any star at any point you want. Galaxy, with some exceptions such as the hidden stars and green stars,only really allows you to get the star associated with the mission itself. Also, I’d much rather 100% 64 any day of the week over Galaxy. Let’s not forget. To 100% Galaxy, you have to essentially 100% the game twice.

I still believe Nintendo should add Super Mario Galaxy 2 as free (or paid) DLC to Super Mario 3D All-Stars!

In Mario 64 and Mario sunshine the controls are the reason why I’ve barley touched either.

I kind of had a good feeling of which one was going to win but I really enjoyed hearing you go into depths about each aspect of all three titles. You really did an awesome job, Mac! Also, I've only played Mario Sunshine once from 3D All-Stars and...I'm sorry but it doesn't really do too much for the gameplay for me as much of the enjoyment I got from 64 and Galaxy. I may have to give it another shot though since I may have been a little too hard on it

Mario galaxy is my favorite game, but I like a lot of things about sunshine and 64 much better than galaxy, and I find myself playing around in sunshine the most, but For some reason though, galaxy is still my favorite.

Sunshine by far my favorite. Galaxy was such a let down to me after the open exploration design of 64 and Sunshine. Isle Delfino still the best location in any Mario game.

I remember playing Mario 64 at launch. There was an open display unit at K-mart waaaaayyyy back in ‘96 before Kmart stores shut down in Canada. My first impression is that I loved the graphics but hated the controls. The camera issues felt more challenging back then because we were just transitioning from 2d to 3d gaming, and a lot of the camera issues still needed to be ironed out through time and experience. I also remember having problems with Sunshine’s camera, where it would sometimes rotate behind a wall or object and you could see Mario’s shadow. The problems with Galaxy’s camera came down to design choice. They created a game with anti-gravity mechanics, and since the wiimote didn’t have a dedicated free roaming camera, it felt more limited in scope but also felt like a more stable experience overall. Galaxy probably aged the best out of the 3, which is understandable since it’s newer. You can see the influence that Mario 64’s hub world had on Sunshine, and you could also see the influence that Sunshine’s secret levels had on Mario Galaxy. These games, along with Galaxy 2 and Odyssey, are my top 5 mario games.

Here's my experience with the 3D All-Stars collection: 100% beat Sunshine, including all of the blue coins 202% beat Galaxy, getting all 120 stars as Mario and Luigi plus each bonus star I could barely force myself to get 50 stars in 64. The gameplay and especially the camera does NOT hold up compared to newer games like Odyssey and I found myself fighting the controls a lot. Here's my most common issue: when I press down on the controller when Mario has his back to me, I expect him to do an immediate about face and run right toward me, but instead he runs in an arc to the left, offsetting his position from where I want him to be. This doesn't happen in any other 3D platformer I've played so it's really jarring

I don’t think galaxy should even be in the discussion. The movement can’t even be compared to the other two. Go play sm64/sunshine and you’re in a suped up sportscar where you find a new movement tech constantly the deeper you dive into the game. Turn on galaxy and you’re riding a bike with training wheels. You quickly learn you have long jumps and that’s about it.

Mario galaxy obviously has an advantage as it is much newer than the other 2. Now while I haven't actually played mario galaxy there is just so much I personally love about mario sunshine. It was my first mario game so of course I have a sweet spot for it but I also love the level design and how each area is much more open.

I know it doesn't matter, but I'm glad you took a point away from mario sunshine... I hope the game felt that. I'd be a lot more lenient on sunshine if it told you what was necessary to beat the game, instead my young self chose to put up with the Balloon popping, watermelon festival, pachinko, poison water, blue coins and other various shine sprites to avoid certain levels (probably goopy inferno) only to have to do them anyway... and I needed a Nintendo power magazine to beat goopy inferno so... f*ck mario sunshine for not telling you the requirements to beat the game.

Regarding post-game rewards. I believe galaxy's Red Star is just superb. Letting you flying around in that sick red and black palette is like the enhanced version of 64's 120 stars wing cap. :'D

Half of these categories were just there to give 64 extra points so it would have a fighting chance. It only wins for someone solely concerned with nostalgia, the other two are both straight improvements in every way.

Awesome comparison, I love the mathematical structure to it! But the real question is: Galaxy 1 or 2?

Super Mario 64 was always my favorite. It’s simply the most fun to me. Sunshine is a tad too difficult for a Mario game while Galaxy is too linear. Super Mario 64 feels the most free in terms of movement and space.

I MASSIVELY disagree on Mario 64 having the best movement, Mario 64 is one of the only games I have ever quit playing (and still never finished to this day) because of its abysmal controls. Firstly, and most detrimentally, Mario does not turn properly in the game, you have to grind to a halt in order to do a full 180 turn. Secondly Mario won't stop moving even when you let go of the stick, he still inches forward slightly, it is EXTREMELY important that Mario always completely stops when you let go of the stick, or else he will walk off platforms or into enemies. I have died countless times due to this stupidity. Thirdly, Mario bonks into absolutely everything and when he does, not only do you lose control of him for a second, but it knocks you back, possibly off a cliff or into an enemy. Fourth, because you cannot change the camera very well, some tight platforming sections are straight up unfair, as the angle you would need to move in is too specific and easy to mess up. Fifth, Mario's jump is impossible to change once you leave the ground, you had better pray that you angled your jump properly before you press the button, or your death is locked in. If you misjudge your jump there is no way to correct it mid air, not only can you not turn around, but you can't move in any direction other than the one you were moving in prior to making the jump. On top of all that, there is no extra jump ability like the Galaxy spin or Fludd. Sixth, The wall jump is horrendous, it's timing is so precise and finicky that it is simply unfun to perform (unlike literally every other Mario game it appears in) Seventh, Most of Mario's other abilities are pretty useless, the punch is bad at taking out enemies and is horrendous at saving you from falls. The dive is a death sentence in any areas with bottomless pits, and barely improves your mobility in any way (in fact, the dive is pretty bad in every game except Odyssey). All that combined with the fact that dying (a common occurrence in bottomless pit levels due to the bad controls) sends you out of the level, is why I stopped playing the game.

Sunshine is underrated in my opinion

This game finally made me love Mario 64. As a 1997 kid who only had an Xbox growing up, my first real exposure to Mario 64 was on the wii virtual console. I could never get into it the way god and the developers intended. Super Mario 3D all stars made me a Super Mario 64 fanatic! Best game in the collection

I’ve replayed Super Mario 64 many times in my life because of how classic & iconic it is. Sunshine I find so frustrating & I’ve quit multiple times trying to finish it.

Your point about not being told what to do with the paintings in 64 is interesting. When 64 came out, everyone who followed game magazines (which were popular and essential back then) knew what to do with the paintings before we even played it since the idea of each world being inside a painting was heavily reported far in advance to release. It's the same with dogs jumping through the windows in Resident Evil. Every single magazine spoiled that so it wasn't very surprising. Thanks for sharing your perspective. It's cool to see you these old games from a fresher perspective.

Didn’t like Sunshine when it came out, played it a lot more on 3D all stars but I still can’t get 100% into the game. I think it’s down to the Obstacle course type levels which become way more of a chore the further you get into the game. 64 was good but I wish nintendo did a bit more polish on the port, even just something like border art on sides or something (a problem nintendo has with many other games which seem to be lacking some content). Galaxy was the one game I didn’t play on release but I thought was the best game on the collection. No idea why they didn’t include galaxy 2 but that’s nintendo!

I think this video would’ve loved Galaxy 2. Just about everything good about Galaxy was made straight up better for Galaxy 2, except for maybe the soundtrack, which was still absolutely amazing.

Interesting I get recommended this video the day after I purchased this game. I completed Super Mario Galaxy but never played Mario 64 or Super Mario Sunshine. I have seen others play but never played myself. I remembered the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection was a thing since I saw my coworker with it recently. Honestly I got the game just to replay Galaxy once more since I no longer have my Wii nor a copy of the game, but the other two games definitely sound worth playing through. 👍

I actually just got a switch from christmas and bought this game, I'm excited to try 64 and sunshine out because I've never played them but I figured this would give me hours of entertainment on car rides or at home.

Man I love them all, sadly I haven’t beat any! I started sunshine but never finished it, I started mario 64 and never finished it, and I never started galaxy. First time I played sunshine was around 2016, and Mario 64 I first played a very long time ago, the DS version on my DSI! I just want to play the games again.

People talk about the Wii remote motion controls being clunky but in my opinion the Wii did it the best. The Switch and Wii U felt too smooth and the 3DS one was bad.

I was born in 1994 and i played 64 on 2001, Sunshine on 2005 and Galaxy on 2008, so all really close. For me, 64 is the best game but hasn't aged well. Galaxy is just amazing

Wii isn't just a GCN with Wifi and motion controls. The CPU runs 50% faster (729mhz vs 486mhz), the GPU runs 50% faster (243mhz vs 162mhz), but one of the biggest differences is that even though they both have 3MB texture memory (2MB dedicated to Z-buffer and framebuffer and 1MB texture cache), as well as and 24MB of MoSys 1T SRAM, the GCN has an additional 16MB of DRAM, while the Wii has an extra 64MB of GDDR3.

Sunshine would have been incredible if they hadn't botched it's execution so badly, but Galaxy is, for all intents and purposes, a flawless platforming game, so Nintendo learned, obviously.

Being a diehard SMG fan and having played it as my first 3D Mario game, I was waiting and waiting for it to pull past Sunshine after the latter dominated for the first half of the video. Honestly, nostalgia aside, all three games are absolutely brilliant, but Galaxy def has the best soundtrack by a country mile.

The only game out of the 3 that I was actively interested in and I wanted to beat and replay was super mario galaxy, I think the controls fit if you played on wii (which I didnt) but you can get used to it,the story is way better than anything I've played mario wise and your in space!! I've beaten it 3 times, the other games? About 8 stars on 64 and I got to 130 or so on sunshine before giving up due to the difficulty. I also thunk that with this video some of these things are still kind of opinion based and I disagree with some of it

I never played super mario 64 or super mario sunshine or super mario galaxy. So when this came out on switch i bought it i played all 3 of them. But sorry to say this but super mario sunshine is on first place for me. On the second place comes super mario galaxy. And on third place comes super mario 64. Only because of the controls
