The Super Mario 64 thing confuses me. I mean, the source code was leaked online and people have it running in all sorts of ways. Nintendo could have just grabbed their own source code, and made a 1080p widescreen 60 FPS version of it. Why wasn't this a thing?
Minor correction: Sunshine’s soundtrack never got an official release. Some tracks were released here and there, but the art shown here is not an actual CD booklet and it was never released in full anywhere aside from being ripped by fans.
@@juanchocaballero6445 Projecting much? I'm sure there's plenty of people who actually watch these videos as a source of information and not just for entertainment. Oh, by the way, I found the fact that Sunshine's soundtrack never got released officially to be quite interesting.
Interesting. My guess is that there likely wasn't a huge demand for it. Let's face it, the Mario Sunshine music isn't as good as pretty much any other Mario game, in my opinion.
Nintendo pushing sales by fostering fear of missing out is disgusting. Physical copies I can understand, but throwing digital in with it? It's just gross.
sojiro856 No the problem is that both are limited, physical being limited is fine, but after March 2021 there is *no way* to buy it except for scalpers reselling it
I don't think it'll be that rare, especially since there is a digital version. I think it'll be slightly less rare than the Zelda collection for GameCube.
There's been a port of Mario 64 available for Switch since May when the decompiled source code hit the interwebs. It included 60fps and 1080p widescreen. Now there are community made HD texture packs and model replacements too, even bug fixes. Hax0rs and homebrewers do what Ninten'dont. A real low energy effort from Nintendo.
Homebrew devs are able to do that because they work for free and have no deadline. Nintendo has to pay its developers and release in a relatively timely manner.
@@DoomPlague Homebrew devs are able to do it because they are super passionate about the game, whereas Nintendo are mostly about making more money. By the way, Nintendo were the ones setting the deadline and they've shown in the past that they have no problem delaying games when they want to. This time, it seems they simply couldn't be bothered to do more the bare minimum to please their hardcore fans.
Honestly, this whole thing reeks of being a rush job to me. Actually doing ports would have taken a lot of time and resources, and I wonder if they lost a lot of time to the pandemic. Since it was for the anniversary, they couldn't delay it, but they couldn't finish it either, so they jazzed up some emulators. Just a guess, but it seems plausible. Charging full price is a real bit of cheek, though.
Excellent review of this collection. Just a bummer they made it limited release with both physical & digital. Plus each game is treated differently with being remastered. Wish all three games received the same amount of tlc.
@@GameSack 🤔 Curious how they worked it out, if that's the case. A team with Galaxy, B team for Sunshine, and C with 64 But no matter what I'm happy for Switch owners getting to relive the magic of these games. Or making new memories
@@GameSack Weird : i prefered Mario Sunshine way more than Mario Galaxy, i couldn't finish Mario Galaxy : i felt quickly bored about it because it's feeling of too easy game...there is something about it that in Galaxy makes me feel Nintendo wanted to make more easier game, and i think that it was confirmed on their next games like Super Mario 3D World. I feel bored when games don't give any challenge....
@@SegaGenesisEvangelion a very valid point! I mean just look at the detail on his hair and shorts... and we didn't need to even speak of the jump animations. Truly a lost art.
Im still thinking they just had the same, set number of Man hours for each title and did what they could. 40 hours in Galaxy looks a lot better than 40 hours in Mario 64, since they started with a newer title.
@@Not-Great-at-Gaming I sincerely doubt that this took that many man hours to develop - they likely adapted extant emulation solutions from the Wii-U/Shield - was probably 3-6 months of work, tops (if that).
@@yellowblanka6058 The rumor is they had 6 months, used a existing emulator for one game, made a new one for another, and galaxy is a hybrid, the game mostly had it's code ported but they had to write a emu for the Wii's GPU and Audio hardware so it ran correctly on the Switch. I am also sure that the pandemic also impacted dev time.
Croc may not have been great, but SM64 owes its (relatively early) existence to Croc. Croc was pitched to Nintendo as a 3D Yoshi game. Nintendo turned them down, secretly very excited about what they saw. They immediately made SM64. Miyamoto later met the Croc guys at a convention and apologized for being so underhanded about it.
Can't wait for SEGA to Drop Greendog 2D All-Stars for switch later this year. Greendog (SEGA Genesis) and Greendog (SEGA Game Gear) All in one portable package!
No they won't. In another 35 years there will be an entirely new Nintendo console that doesn't have a Mario 64 and entirely new chance to sell old Mario 64 once again.
@@islandboy9381 look at Crash and Spyro Trilogies or Halo MCC. Is Nintendo that poor to get a team for remaster with a modern touch? Or just too busy counting money selling for premium where others sell with a discount much better products.
Man, I wish I had watched this review before I picked this game up. The fact that you can't invert the controls in Sunshine kills it for me, and since I missed it on the GC, and no one else seems to think the lack of control options was ever worth mentioning. I had no idea.
For this collection they are using the Shindou Edition which had the different audio clip when fighting Bowser and the removal of the backwards long jump trick so no more cheating your way up the infinite stairway.
This absolutely reminds me of the Mario All Stars anniversary release for Wii. The only change they made was fixing the menu so you could just use the Wiimote and didn't need a classic controller to access certain options. So other than that it was just a ROM dumped onto a DVD. Happy anniversary!
Kirby still has the best anniversary/retro collection, hands down, and it was released nearly 10 years ago on the Wii. 6 classic games, from OG Gameboy, NES, SNES, and even the 64 game, all of them adapted for use with JUST a Wiimote, PLUS Virtual Console features like game manuals and suspend states. You even got extra levels in the gameplay style of the modern release of the time (Return to Dreamland). That's *before* even mentioning how you got 3 episodes of the anime, a 45 song soundtrack, an artbook, plus extra blurbs and trivia about the OTHER Kirby games, including box-art and commercials. FOR 40 BUCKS. IN 2012. Nintendo always drops the ball with Mario's collections. At the same time, Mario was having his 25th anniversary, and all Nintendo did was repackage the *original* 4 Megabyte Mario All-Stars ROM onto an entire 4 Gigabyte DVD. It wasn't even the version with Super Mario World. So much wasted space- and it was found that you probably saved money by buying all the games in the collection separately through the Wii-Shop. I'm not too surprised they blew this one, too. Watch, they'll release another version with Galaxy 2 in the next couple of years, then in 20 years for Mario's 55th anniversary, they'll re-release THIS one.
"In this case they just didn't care as much as they should have" - they knew that these games were popular/sought after and people would buy it anyway so they put in the bare minimum effort. The lack of any control options is proof of that - absolutely absurd.
@@CarloNassar At least they had bonus modes to keep players busy for hours and custom control settings. Plus, for the Zero/Zx collection they actually adopted the source code instead of just emulation.
@@soni-switch5270 Who cares if it's emulated or not? There are still parts in the other collections (X and Classic) that are emulated and while I don't mind speed challenges, I *hated* the X challenge and I'm not doing it again. Plus, Capcom didn't even put proper pixel scaling in the XLC and Zero/ZX LC.
The Galaxy soundtrack was bundled with some Wii consoles (American Galaxy bundles). I have two copies right next to me. The Super Mario 64 soundtrack was available from the Power Supplies Catalog.
@@roasty80 No love for Dave? I liked how his Nintendo stannery contrasted with the Sega stannery of Joe. Still a great show though which is rare for anything video game related on RU-vid.
I love this collection. But one thing that dissapointed me was not being able to use the gamecube controller with the exact same controls as Mario Sunshine on the gamecube.
dude that is the problem with nintendo they drastically change all their controllers even change the letters on the buttons that when you want to play the older games they don't feel right
I’m not defending the lack of effort put in by Nintendo on Mario 64 but there’s something to be said about limitations bringing out the best in creativity…something like imagination and visual art working together I think. I understand they could’ve remade it and had all new textures but I think sharpening up what was already there was a good route to take. BUT they DEFINITELY should’ve put more work into it. I appreciate the visuals because it truly was mind melting at the time it released, and keeping a record of that is essential imo. But the lack of widescreen on this release is very bizarre imo. Awesome you didn’t shit on this release as much as I thought you might Joe. You’re a solid dude.
I can’t make myself re-buy these, 64 looks best on a CRT and the others look better emulated at 4K. It’s a cool package for folks that want them handheld though.
It's not a rumor that availability is limited. They said it at the announcement that it will be gone after March. It's such a Nintendo move. Not only does making something limited cause people to buy things they might not have (or that they might have waited for), it also keeps the value high the next time they decide to do a re-release of these games.
It's really fucking stupid. Like Miyamoto explaining why they didn't do another F-Zero. "The one on Gamecube was great. We don't know how to improve it, so you can play that." - No you fucking can't, because it's not available to play anywhere.
kuhpunkt yeh they rehash so much shit and make new mariokarts all the time so why can’t they just have people making more fzero? I only got into fzero after they stopped making them and I’m a lil pissed 😂
Personally I am not happy with the Switch version of Super Mario Sunshine. It is my favorite 3D Mario game actually, but the lack of analogue controls for spraying the water leads feels less natural than in the original. It is not possible to adjust the water pressure, so it leaves you to tank-controls only which harms the flow of the gameplay. Hope Nintendo will patch the game for proper controls with the Gamecube controller.
Funny thing is they still have the original source code map and model editor for sms. If they wanted to they could remake that game for switch but they would get loads of grief from Mario purists that love the old game even with its rushed map design and bad game mechanics and repetitive boring missions. Stupid people are so stupid.
When you play Galaxy through emulation you can see how much of a gimmick the motion controls were in general, you just assign the wiggle function to a button and that's it...there's no "wiggle levels of intensity" or nothing, it could have been a button since the beginning.
I'm thinking that maybe Mario 64 had really aggressive geometry culling, and Nintendo couldn't be bothered to change the way the game is rendered. By contrast, Mario Sunshine is probably already rendering all the geometry needed for 16:9.
@@sozaj Can only go by what they said in his last episode. Was moving up in his day job and didn't have time for that, his family, and Game Sack (if I remember correctly)
@@sozaj Naah. Joe and Dave are still good mates. Just Dave lives a couple of hours away from Joe now, and Dave has work and family commitments that means he can't do Game Sack anymore (aside from the odd cameo).
I’m convinced this is just a cash grab. Nintendo knew people would be baffled by the barebones nature of this offering so they made it limited time so they can sell it out.
I’ve played/beat all mainline Mario games ever made. I enjoyed Sunshine at the time, but I totally remember the hate. I remember a lot of people/places saying things like a 7/10 game. It’s funny how the internet has changed on it. I’ve seen the same thing with GameCube controllers in general. They used to be hated on a fair bit, and these days, they’re “the best controller ever.”
Friend: The Xbox Series X is the most powerful console ever and will play most Xbox games... Me: Does it have Green Dog? Friend: What? No. Me: Hard pass. 😎
Although we technically own the Wii Virtual Console version of 64, and a GameCube version of Sunshine (with only a Wii and not a GameCube), we've never ACTUALLY ever played those first two. So this edition is really our first opportunity to play them, and so far Sunshine seems fun, though the controls are going to take some acclimatization. We've played through Galaxy several times and this version looks and plays amazing! Never minded the waggle, but now since it's waggle AND/OR button, it's seamless. I find this collection to be worth it. I'm expecting the "limited release" to mean that, maybe, there's a Mario Galaxy 3 coming out and there's going to be a SMG1,2&3 edition. Here's hoping, anyway.
I think you mean epitome. :-) Anyway, yeah. Imagine if people wanted to buy it because it was good, rather than because they might not be able to some day.
Did not expect a Doug Demuro reference in a Game Sack video comment that's for sure. Just another interesting quirk with RU-vid comments I thought you should see.
@bigevilworldwide The Mario 64 ROM is 8MB. LOL! Not to mention, these are all emulated. They did the minimal amount of work, so I wouldn't say people are expecting too much by wanting Galaxy 2 as well. Had they actually ported these games and programmed them for the Switch, that'd be one thing. But, they did the least amount of work possible.
Having never owned an N64 or Wii, and having never played Sunshine or Galaxy, as a Switch owner I'm really happy they did this. I hope they keep porting legendary games I never owned/played back in the day due to lack on Nintendo console ownership over to the Switch!
@@DasAntiNaziBroetchen how cheap do you think a copy of Sunshine is? Because a lot of the time that cost what this collection costs by itself. I get Nintendo could have done more and its a bummer they didnt but the collection absolutely pays for itself
@@Harperlarp Thank you for your question! Maybe you didn't know this, so let me explain: In English when we say "a" or "an" we imply a singular item. So if we re-read my original comment with that in mind, we can deduce I said the following: "For that price, a singular console + a singular game can be purchased." Additionally your original comment didn't put any emphasis on the games being in "HD", which is why my reply ignored that part too. *Now regarding the price:* I can buy an N64 with Mario 64 for ~10$ here. Mario Galaxy: 3-10$ Wii: ~10$ GameCube: ~20$ Mario Sunshine: Pricey depending on region (10$-15$ in Japan) As you can see, you can basically buy all consoles + games for 45£ (~58$). Which means I was indeed wrong, because you can't buy one console + game, but three! *Not only that! Since you now own all the original consoles, if there is any other game you want to play, you only have to buy that game!*
Everything on this collection is about greed and bare minimum effort on a game millions of people would get. The Limited release bs is not surprising coming from Nintendo but whatever no one will deny they are great games. Fortunately I have all 3 of these games on their original hardware. I guess the real deal with it is taking all three on the go.
@Xaphan Vassago True not to mention it comes with the full ost of all three games. Still was expecting more from a company who has invested money on criminalize regular people and so fans for all sorts of situations involving some of their IP's as if they really need more money and influence. If some people supports that kind of abuse it's okay however it doesn't mean everyone does.
Damn.. harsh commentary on Mario Sunshine. I bought the game when it came out. Loved every minute of it. Didn't expect it to be a Mario 64 sequel. I expected it to be it's own thing. And, to me, I wasn't let down. It was a great relief playing it after a hard days work on the job site. And my infant son, at the time, loved to see it as he was in my arms while I was playing it. I still have my Gamecube and original copy of the game. 👍
I'll never forget years back back when I first found this channel, I was just getting into video games and collecting. I asked them a question which to Joe was super basic and I ridiculous of me to even ask. But everyone starts someone and I unfortunately wasn't born knowing this stuff. So instead of ignoring it or letting Dave answer it since he's actually a nice person, I had the misfortune or Joe answering and making me feel like a moron. I still watch the channel but I'm reminded of that interaction everytime I see his face. Thanks for your help, kindness, and encouragement Joe!
Yes. That is the definitive version of SM64 (imo) as it includes Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Wario as playable characters. I think there's also some additional content as well.
My favorite is how they made the controls not inverted when it was before. So it REALLY messes with my muscle memory and there is NO option to change it back.
Yeah it's kind of lame they left out Galaxy 2 from the Collection. It would of been great if they put in Super Mario 3d World into this collection instead of trying to make people rebuy it, in a separate release.
Why would they do that? Barely anyone bought a WiiU so now’s the time to make some decent profit from their software that didn’t get a great chance to begin with
Super Mario 64 > Super Mario Sunshine > Super Mario Galaxy. Sorry, it's just how I feel. Galaxy was a great game if you don't compare it to SM64 and Sunshine, but the the reduction of environments to small planets kinda reduced the scope of being able to treat the environment as a complex playground, which is what I always found fun about the prior 3D Mario games. I'll be getting this release simply because of Sunshine, which I have missed playing in a long time. :)
Basically, Nintendo in a nutshell. They'll release this same collection on their next console and fans will sh/t themselves over it again. That's likely why this is being touted as a limited release, so they can do it all over in the future. Kind of like Disney does when they vault their movies.
5:20 how isn't Mario 64 goodness powered by the gamecube? Sunshine is an excellent upgrade from 64 and honestly it's like 64, but bigger and with more things to see. They both feature a hub/ overworld you can explore with levels you can access, which themselves are big and explorable. Galaxy, meanwhile, is an awesome game, but it feels like a stripped down version 64. You can run around the hub, but the small size doesn't exactly make it good for exploring. And the levels themselves are good and have great things to see, they are more on the linear side; I felt myself moving forward, so to speak, than running around to see everything because i was already seeing everything just by going through the level. I get that it's his opinion, before someone jumps on me, it's fine not to like a game, but don't knock on it for not being something that it definitely is. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you can't recognize that.
Just FYI: As far as I know the soundtrack of Super Mario Galaxy was never for sale in the EU, but you could get it as a reward in the Club Nintendo. I got the Super Mario Galaxy Soundtrack(2CDs) and the Kirby: Triple Deluxe Soundtrack that way.
Fun fact: Super Mario Sunshine was the first bukkake simulator followed by an instant classic known as Splatoon. Now featuring even bigger loads than ever!
I think this collection is kind of a tech showcase and market test for a Gamecube/wii store. The hybrid emulation approach means they are considering to release more games from these platforms. Also, the timed release point to that, because probably these games will be released separately at some point. In short: “Hey we need to make a gamecube store, how about to update them a little? Also the first games should pay for the development of the tools and research”.
Nintendo in the 35th anniversary of its most iconic character: Puts some of its 3D games emulated in a package with OSTs as bonus Sega in the collection of one of its fondly remembered series, Wonder Boy (Monster World in Japan) for the PS2: Puts most games released until then in a package, and as added bonus adds artwork galleries including sketches of discarded content for Monster World IV, instruction manuals, Japanese/overseas variants, and OSTs for all of them. Sega does what Nintendon't, indeed.
Look, Sega is pretty cool in some ways, but are you seriously going to act like they do a good job on anniversaries? You do know the way they celebrated Sonic's 15th Anniversary was with Sonic 06 and Sonic Genesis, right?
@@NotaPizzaGRL I'm comparing their mascot series though, which is much fairer game. If we're including more then I can bring up Kirby's Dream Collection, which is the platinum standard of anniversary collections. Point is Sega isn't exactly much better in this area since while they have made some good ones, they're also known to throw all standards out the window to meet an anniversary date. It's not fair to only cherry pick one of the sides.
The skit should have ended with Green Dog being said louder, gruffer and more "GREEEEEN DAWWWWWG!" Limiting the collection like they're doing is such a frankly stupid thing to do, that would fairly hurt anyone who gets a Switch at a later point and is interested in getting the collection only to find that they can't. I hope Nintendo aren't going to start doing a Sega in regards of really bad decisions.
This is exactly what happens when an adult talks about videogames. Best part is that you get useful informations about the game. I will never thank you enough for your hard work!
Despite Super Mario Sunshine has some flaws, it also had it's own appeal in a different direction and I loved this game because it was different and for what it is.
@@jbfarley I'm saying he should appreciate for what it is despite whatever flaws it has. I seen far worse games than this, but like you said everyone has an opinion and this was one of mine.
I would say the SM64 treatment is the same as the xbox live version of Banjo Kazooie and Tooie back in the 360 days. Not a complete overhaul but enough. It's like preserving the original while modernizing it just enough to make it enjoyable by today's standards. The other two games don't need to be updated that much, maybe sunshine's polygon count if you're THAT picky about things but other than that they seem perfect.
Thanks Joe for this great review! Imo, this is THE BEST RU-vid channel for game reviews. Highly recommend surfing this channel! Hopefully (and doubtfully), Nintendo will listen and provide a widescreen patch for Mario 64... On a brighter note, Greendog kicks butt and I love the soundtrack..
Super Mario 64 Soundtrack and Super Mario Galaxy Soundtrack were release here. 64 through a special Nintendo Power subscription package that was sold at various stores like Wal-Mart or through the Nintendo Power Catalog. Galaxy's soundtrack was sample music sold with a Wii Console/Super Mario Galaxy bundle. Super Mario Sunshine did not receive a release in the United States.
64 and Sunshine already have "sidequests", and Galaxy is more linear so side content doesn't make much sense. Galaxy 2 was the side quest of that game :P
i think mario 64 actually was the first full 3d platformer ever made.. u said it wasn't but i think it was.. jumping flash doesn't count- that was 1st person
They’d have to pay me $60 to play Sunshine again, and Super Mario 64 DS added so much more content that I can never go back to the N64 version. So basically I’d be paying $60 to play Galaxy...again. Should have been a $40 game at most, or a Digital only game for $30.
I truly think it’s unacceptable to call this Mario All Stars. The first one was a masterpiece. They significantly improved the original 3 plus Lost Levels. There was love and care and time put into it. This was a slap in the face. And it’s selling great anyway. They’re never going to learn.
Sunshine has a learning curve for controls. It just takes a while to appreciate it, it’s harder for newcomers to get into it. Once you do get it, it feels so crisp though
I'm not a Nintendo gamer, so this quality of re-release is humiliating compared to what other companies manage. Digital Eclipse made an excellent port of their Mega Man games, with all bells and whistles, features and loads of extra content. Only for $19.99. Anyone buying this collection is only encouraging Nintendo to make such barebones remasters.
Hemang Chauhan this is just me and most other people that aren’t excited about the price but glad it just exists anyway are buying it for the lone fact that Mario Sunshine will always be getting more expensive ($149 online) because people are willing to pay that much for it, so some of us will take what we can get and hold off on everything else they make. I definitely prefer Xbox anyway.
Mario sunshine on switch is missing a crucial thing, you can’t aim up while shooting water unless you go into the “first” person water shoot when you press on the joycon control stick. The GameCube let you run and shoot water and aim up without doing that
Yeah but even if you find sunshine and galaxy for cheap you need to buy a Wii (unless you own one) and still you can't play it portably. I like the collection but I agree since they did so few changes it should be 40$-50$
@@kekeke8988 I am not so sure about that. Maybe SM64 alone could have been a free gift. But a considerable amount of money has gone into developing this thing even if the changes themselves are small. I think 40$ is a fair price for 3 well running ports of good games.
Wait so you're telling me that the guy who says Super Mario Sunshine likes his balls were removed by a warp pipe accident is the same guy who voices a dragon in Skyrim? WHA WHA WHAAAAAAAT!!!!!???
