I always thought that the sink a sand death was probably the most creepy. I think it's the sound the a bad makes when Mario sinks in and dies. That's some dark stuff.

This reminds me of when I watched a twitch streamer play some mario 64 romhack, which meant custom stages He gets stuck underneath cylinder shaped block and mario stayed squished for a few seconds before the game automatically counted it as a death and bowser laughs
