There's a new Super Mario Bros. movie on the way. I decided to go back and revisit it and had ‪@OfficialJoeyC‬ and ‪@jessdaydreaming‬ (former editor and now current review girl for ‪@TheCreepOff‬) watch it for the first time ever! They were shocked to find out this movie actually has hardcore fans. So many fans that I now think its kind of overrated.

If you think this live action film was bad, 1) I don't blame you. 2) Read the original 1991 fantasy draft for this movie. Sure its somewhat more in line with the games, but in that draft, Mario was a self esteem crushing douchebag.

I'm referring to their comments on the Blade Runner sequel. Not the '93 Mario Bros Movie. The fact that they were willing to annoy everyone else in the theater with their phone, too stupid to ask for a refund, and such numbskulls they don't know a good movie when they see one. If you don't enjoy the movie you CAN ask for your money back or at least a exchange for a different movie. Why pull out your phone and distract everybody who paid to see the movie and ruin their enjoyment.

I just love how insane the entire package is. Everything from the production of the movie to the movie itself is a Rollercoaster of insanity. And the cherry on top is that it's supposed to be a movie about the mario brothers.

Fun fact: Dennis Hopper told in an interview that he told his son he started in the Super Mario Brothers movie to buy him those expensive shoes. His son said he didn't need them that badly

I think the biggest problem with this movie is that they never made a Mario video game in the style of the movie like they did with Street Fighter the Movie. Imagine if they made this game today, it could be Nintendo's Cyber Punk. I would 100% buy this!

You're completely right about the whole Koopa scene in the devo chair. They cut a part out where someone got turned into ooze. It's in the Morton Jankel cut. I saw the replay of the Movie Dumpster watchalong over the the weekend.

RIP, Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper. In an interview, Hoskins said that "The movie was a Fucking nightmare! The directors were a bunch of Fucking morons that didn't know what they were doing! It's like working with a bunch of Fucking children! The script was being rewritten several times during filming!" Hoskins and Leguizamo would get drunk in order to film their scenes. Hoskins almost got killed doing his own stunts. When Dennis Hopper's son asked why he did a terrible film, he said, "So I can buy you a new pair of shoes." Hopper's son said, "I don't need shoes THAT badly." Despite the flaws behind the scenes, I actually enjoyed it very much.

I have Been watching the Channel for over 2 years now, (and Im sure she is a good editor), but Jessica is the absolute Worst Co-Host that has been on, hands down.... Constantly not getting jokes, can't roll with the punches, and her takes are just not that good. Im sure people will "white Knight", but they deep down know I am right. Nothing but good for the lady, but to anyone paying the slightest attention, she is bad at this. Not a good fit

I will defend the Super Mario Bros movie with something people often forget: Not all the games up to that point take place in the Mushroom Kingdom. Super Mario World is in Dinosaur Land, NOT the Mushroom Kingdom. Hence Yoshi. Yet Bowser and Peach are still there. Super Mario Bros 2 (the US one) is in Dream World. Peach is a playable character, not the rescuee. That's half of the main games NOT in the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario Bros is debtable, Donkey Kong is Brooklyn. You just know they couldn't realize the Mushroom Kingdom as depicted in the games on a realistic budget. It's a subpar movie that suffered every single day of production but I will defend that creative choice. There's lots of tweaks they could've done to improve things (have Mario dating -Pauline- in the beginning, throw in a joke about about how Mario saved her from a gorilla, explaining how he's dating such an attractive woman), etc.

Honestly, I didn’t mind the 90s movie all that much, it’s fun to watch sometimes and it’s honestly a cult classic now and maybe a guilty pleasure of mine, I think the practical effects for the Koopa’s monster form And Yoshi where done pretty well. Rest in peace Bob Hoskins

My film locations class visited the set where the Super Mario Bros was filmed and the props that were in storage. That movie was crazy but fun. John Leguizamo and Bob Hoskins we're great even if they were drunk during filming

Not great but not horrible by any means either definitely NOT traditional Mario but think of it as part of the “MARIO MULTIVERSE” or the preferred contemporary colloquialism; it’s definitely a bad interpretation of the lore but the film is fun in its own context.

I've had Super Mario Bros on DVD for years but never watched it until a couple of weeks ago. I was a fan of the Mario games in the 90's too. Anyway long story short: I loved it. Sure it has little to do with the source material but the sets and cinematography looked great, the SPX and VFX hold up quite well and despite Luigi being more like a son to Mario, the casting and performances of Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo had real synergy. The ending was clearly a sequel hook. It's a shame we never got a sequel, would have loved to have seen more of Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi.

I liked the movie as a kid and still do. Its no masterpiece, its just dumb fun. It would have been weird if they tried being lore accurate based of the 3 nes games. Bob and John dress up in bright colorful overalls, running around jumping in and out of pipes. Crushing goomba's head in these weird brown mushroomed head things with no arms. Giant man sized turtles some with wings and Hammer throwers. All the random objects with faces on them trying to kill them, ghost and fucking sun its self flying at them. It would have been one hell of a glories mess for them to do that live action in 1993.

This movie felt like if the Mario Bros meet Blade Runner meets Jurassic Park. Thus begun the trend of bad Video Game movies. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat: annihilation, Double Dragon. I remember seeing this film in theaters back in 93 and as a kid I did enjoy him but I knew it was not my Mario bros, that honor belongs to Lou Albano and Danny Wells (RIP to both). And I also believe that when this movie came out it was at the time of the Super Nintendo and also Super Mario World. Still love your work Tony keep it up 👍

1:14:32 I too was confused by him robbing the pizza guy at gunpoint via videophone. Like, the guy isn't reacting because he knows all dad can do is shoot his own screen, but does _Koopa_ know that? Also he's the president, and a Donald Trump expy... how can he not afford a single pizza? Then, later I realized that it's this universe's version of a 'mouse,' but it still makes no sense why he's pointing it since all the selections he's making are conveyed verbally. If it weren't for literally every other part of this movie, that scene would have been pretty incomprehensible.

At the time this movie came out I didn’t hate it .. but at the same time I didnt feel it was a good Mario movie.. I decided to disassociate it mentally at the time and I was okay .. I mean I love BIO-DOME I love FREAKED, I love suburban commando .. this is a b-movie .. it’s not what we deserved as a Mario movie but it’s what we deserved as a late 80’s early 90’s b-movie.. also my life would of been different if it wasn’t made

overrated? overrated!? this movie held a 6% on Rotten Tomatoes for many years - and only within the last decade has started to find the love it deserved. it is so creative… and served as a fruitful origin-story for the Super Mario Bros. shame that people lack the imagination or spirit to appreciate something so audaciously artistic. I do love this movie - and that will never change.

I’ve always gotten a kick out of the “But Jurassic Park came out the next week! We didn’t stand a chance!” excuse for why it failed, like people aren’t allowed to watch two movies or that multiple movies can’t make money at the same time or something.
