Mario Odyssey was just an overall awesome experience for me, and when when playing BOTW I just found myself losing track of time and playing for 3+ hours in one sitting
I’m a new switch lite owner, I’m 47 years old. My 9 year daughter and I will both be getting Nintendo switch lites for Christmas with the Mario Oddysey game. I wanted for us to be able to play them next to one another and we can help each other. I hope the Mario game won’t frustrate my daughter with it being difficult. For the love of Pete I’ve tried to play the demo at Target and idk what I’m doing. I have a Master’s degree of Science. 😂
Wow that's a tough call! As someone who barely played Zelda throughout the years, BOTW was perfect and has brought me into the series. I even went back and bought the WiiU HD remasters. Mario is just Mario, which is to say awesom too! Odyssey the best Mario for sure! So....I can't pick one over the other. You have to have both in your collection!
I personally like both games I understand how the dungeons aren’t the dungeons in Zelda but the open world aspect of the game and how I’m not forced to just play the story and can actual explore I love And Mario is just like Mario It’s the same concept over year Run jump collect coins I get I can explore each world but to me it’s kinda not that fun
Super Mario Odyssey is my 14th Super Mario game and Legends of Zelda Breath of the Wild is my first Legends of Zelda game and I like Legends of Zelda Breath of the Wild more.
I was gonna give a long drawn out reason why I preffered Odyssey over BotW, but I figured why do I need to when the truth is plain and simple: I grew up playing almost nothing but Mario games. I've only picked up the Zelda series just this past year. So, I got a much more enjoyable experience out of Mario Oddysey. Now, I really enjoyed everything BotW had to offer me, Super Mario Odyssey had me smiling from ear to ear every step of the way and as the credits rolled showing me my journey through the game, I teared up a bit as I began to recollect the twenty years tgat I've been playing Mario games and I immediately wanted to start up Mario 64 and relive them all over again. So, while I have extremely fond memories of the Mario series, I'll give BotW points for reinventing the Zelda formula in a way it probably shouldn't take a step back from. It felt like an adventure game, but for me, Mario Odyssey wasn't just an adventure. It was an experience I'll never forget, like I was playing a Mario game for the first time again. I can't wait to see where it'll go next!
Guys I’m hopefully getting a switch this Christmas (finally lol) so which should I buy first? I’m planning on only buying one, “finishing” the game and then getting the other. Which one? Mario or Zelda?
Both games are amazing. BoTW was the first Zelda game I ever played and I loved it so much. If I had to choose one, it would be BoTW. Since I was young, I had been around mario games and never really got out of them. BoTW for me was a completely new type of gameplay and it made me get out of the mario world. I loved Odyssey so much, but zelda as won my heart a bit more. I liked being able to do more of what I wanted to do instead of having to follow was the game was telling to do next. Even if Odyssey gave us more freedom to play with, I still found myself having to move forward to the next world because after a while, I had gone through the whole world. With BoTW, I could do what I want. I think it took me a couple of weeks before defeating my first devine beast because I kept finding new stuff that weren't really forcing me to defeat ganon soon. I could go at my own pace. I find myself enjoy that freedom more in zelda than in mario Still both games are amazing and I can't wait to play them again!

I had 150ish hours in BOTW but, only 10-15 ish hours in Odyssey. Both I enjoyed equally. They are two VERY different games. Even though many call them “the best games ever” they shouldn’t be put in the same category. Love them both!
@Ayustria Salma Mario odysseys postgame gets boring pretty fast. The only moons I remember having fun with were dark side kingdom and darker Side kingdom.
@Ayustria Salma it doesn’t have a dedicated postgame but it has enough content that you will always have something to do. I’ve had the game since 2017 and I haven’t completed every shrine or done all of the sidequests.
I was completely hooked on Zelda and couldn't stop thinking about it when I was in class and as soon as I wasn't busy, I just pulled out my switch and just got immersed in the world . I took tons of breaks in mario odyssey and felt that it had nothing on mario galaxy. I was focusing more on other games like Pokémon silver and was having a much better time. Botw is one of the most important Nintendo games off all time while odyssey is just another amazing 3D mario game.
@Sergio Ramirez Odyssey might be just another amazing 3D mario game (I personally think it is the greatest mario game of all time), but BoTW is just Skyrim with better combat, more diverse environments, and lower quality quests. Nothing special.
With zelda they need to combine the new and the old, have an amazing open world, but keep the themed dungeons and items you get in the dungeons, that'd be an amazing game.

In my opinion I prefer zelda botw bc when traveling it is easier to play the game in one device without using motion controls when you don't have a table to stand your Nintendo switch when in the car.
Definitely Zelda. I've got over 100 hours in this game and I'm still finding new things. I beat the story and then I found a completely new town. I put Mario down and don't really care about it.

I think Zelda Breath of the wild is extremely well made and I love the quality of the game, but what i don’t like about Zelda is that i keep getting stuck in the same area. I like Mario Odyssey more because every 60 seconds i get to see something new and interesting. plz don’t hate... this was written by a ten yr old
I completely agree the exact thing happens to me. I couldn't get past one part when i first got it so i put it down for a while. I picked it back up again and beat that part but i just couldn't keep playing it. I just get so bored.

The legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild is one of the best games on the switch, and the open world is absolutely amazing. I never got bored in the game, every time I explore the world I feel like I am always in the right place. It is a dangerous game. Once you boot it up, one hour just vanishes like it's nothing. Super Mario Odyssey is such a colorful and wonderful game. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing and I cannot explain how much I love it. I am not trying to say that the Zelda soundtrack isn't good, because it is Hella good, but it isn't as memorable as Mario Odyssey's soundtrack. The amount of moons and replay ability in Mario is absolutely amazing. I find both of them amazing games and Nintendo Switch owners definitely need to have them in their library. I am giving my point to Super Mario Odyssey because of the variety and originality in the game. Definetly my favorite Nintendo switch game. Mario Odyssey is a miracle of a game, and you can't change my opinion. Sorry if I repeated some stuff lol.
its open world isn't that impressive Its densely populated sometime going large chunks of time walking with nothing in sight...there's way bigger ooen worlds with way more npcs towns etc nowhere near as big as other open world games thats not arguable. There's about 25 hours of actual content in botw...
I like Botw better because I like long games that are worth my money and botw just exceeded that. Honestly, odyssey is good but it's boring just getting moons after you finish the story. Plus it's pretty short.

I'll split the difference and say they are different games and each does what it does extremely well. And I absolutely love both of them. Both were love letters to their source material that still expanded the experience in ways that were both satisfying and consistent to their respective franchises. They both did things that many games don't, which is give me moments that are so unexpected or fun that I'm actually kind of sad I'll never be able to re-experience each for the first time. Two amazing titles. If I had to only take one, it would be Zelda because I've always been a harder core Zelda guy over the years. But man, two top notch achievements.

I love BoTW! I never got bored. The memories were really cool, but that was basically all the story we got. And it made me a little sad to see the kingdom in ruins. It would have been cool to explore the kingdom without it being in ruins. And I just bought Mario Odyssey a couple days ago. Pretty excited about it!

Rest In Space still it shouldn’t matter it’s still a Zelda title and as he pointed out in the video they’re are trying to change things up and make the game better but I agree both are as good as each other.
Mario Odyssey was better to me. When I played Breath of the Wild I could never cling to it like the other Zelda games. I agree doing the dungeons in previous Zelda games was better for me because that is what I am used to. Odyssey reminded me so much of Super Mario 64, which is a childhood memory. I should give Breath of the Wild another chance one day.
I loved Mario Odyssey more. I enjoyed BoTW, but not as much. I love Zelda, mostly for two things. Music, and the Dungeons. Those 2 things are what disappointed me most when playing. Other than that, an outstanding and innovative game for the franchise. Mario was just an amazing experience, everything just felt so alive. It always feels fresh, moving from one idea to the next, and even after I had completed the game, I just wanted to play more. Mario Odyssey, is sitting at my 2nd favourite game, after OoT (mostly nostalgia, tbh).
After playing both games, I can easily say that I think botw is a much better game. It does get a bit of an extra boost because I am a huge zelda fan, but even putting that to the side it destroys odyssey. I think it all has to do with the person playing it because not everybody has the same interests in a game. Botw destroys odyssey for me mainly because everybody had this huge hype for both these games, and they both didn't dissapoint, but botw delivered such a new game that it just didn't dissapoint my excitement in any way. Now mario didn't necessarily dissapoint me either, just after all that hype, you are getting a game that is amazing, but isn't really anything new. A lot of people will disagree with me on this, and I understand why, but I felt like the story in botw was amazing. I love how you get attached to all the characters you meet throughout the story such as zelda and the champions. They don't develope too much, but it is enough to fall in love with the characters, and I love seeing zelda struggle with unleashing her true power because it just gives off a different feeling than other zelda games. Now in odyssey I didn't feel any attachment to any of the characters, they just are there and move along with the story, and the story is not any different than any other mario game, it wasn't bad, it just didn't stand out to me either.
then you have a lot of idle time and or suck at the game... there's simply not that much content in botw sparse open world maybe if you waste your time getting korok seeds for nothing theres only about 25 hours of real content and it doesn't have all the fun side content that past zeldas had... no way you 100 percent mario odyssey in under 60 hours...

I've got to go with Zelda on this one I've sunk like 200 hours in to the game and it's changed how I look at open world games just from the ability to climb anything and glide I do agree with some points like lack of story and traditional dungeons but I see botw as a blue print to future Zelda games and I hope they find a way to give us the dungeons we love as well as a solid story As for mario I enjoyed the game and besides a few moments like new donk city and the ending I don't think I was ever blown away But what I do like about the two is nintendos approach they made both mario and Zelda are playgrounds to experiment and it makes me more excited for both Pokemon and metroid to see if they can have a similar impact
I’ve played Mario odyssey on one of my best friend’s switch, and Zelda BOTW on my Switch. I love both, but I like Zelda more, just because of how long you can play it.
Mario is my favorite, but Zelda is more of a milestone for gaming. I'm not a huge fan of zelda but I see it's worth. so if I had to pick a winner, it would be broom in the night sky.
Im supposed to be getting a switch soon, but I can just tell I'm going to love both of these games. I love 3D Mario games, and as much as I love the Zelda franchise I was getting a little bit over the dungeons system. Both of these I'm so excited to play
I still dont know why people compare these games. If you like running around as Mario, and collecting a gajillion moons without any effort, then Odyssey is for you. For everyone else, Botw is clearly the better, more intricate, and revolutionary game.
Both are really great, it’s honestly hard to decide because both are bestselling of Nintendo, I like the new mechanics in Odyessy, and I like the storyline/plot of BoTW
I actually totally felt the same way about Zelda. I can't wait for Zelda links Awakening. I've been dying for a traditional modern Zelda game. I totally appreciate how good breath of the wild is, but I prefer top down old school Zelda. Link to the past and link between world's are my style.
I have to give the edge to Odyssey. As good as BOTW is, that' game's open world doesn't hold a candle to Odyssey's. Odyssey has a good variety of colorful game worlds, while with Zelda, you're really only stuck with one. The combat in Odyssey is funner too. Like what other games can your control your enemies? That very concept is one of the coolest things in all of video games.
Thats what open world is lmao. Zelda is open world and Mario is semi-open world, Zelda trades multiple worlds for a Larger map, Biomes, weather cycles, day/night cycle and multiple ways to explore (horses, climbing, shield surfing and paragliding).
Geez it’s not like hyrule is just a field. There’s multiple regions with different mechanics and weather. And how is Mario’s open world better? Some of the kingdoms are the size of my back yard.
I think both games are special in their own way, i'm happy to have experienced and loved greatly both. But I do agree BOTW lacked in writing and tying you to the characters. Also i believe the easyness on Odyssey is for it to be open to broader group, nowadays most people who grew with these games have jobs and responsibilities to take care of, they can't exactly savor the story if it took so long.
I'm in love with both games, they make me so happy and both are so great. Although my anxiety issues get in the way of me playing zelda I know it's an amazing game so I haven't really finished zelda so I can't really judge but I know that both of the games are PHENOMENAL

I would say that Mario gave me more pure joy than Zelda, but Zelda made me feel more connected with the characters and more immersed in the game world in general. I love both of these games but if it came down to Game of the Year, I would have to give it to Zelda, the literal only reason being that it was something that had never been done in a Zelda game and Mario has done the sandbox thing before. Zelda was just too innovative and different than any other Zelda game that Mario is just barely behind it.

When you go to jumprope in mario the guy says jump, man. Thats a call back to donkey kong when mario was only known as jumpman. The girl that sings pauline was the girl from the original donkey kong it wasnt peach that was the girl in the red dresses name.
The problem with odyssey to me was that I got so bored so quickly, since it is nothing but getting moons. I simply didn’t get that rush that others do in getting moons, and I hated seeing over 800 moons on a counter. But in Zelda you could just do whatever without any progression, and I love just messing around with things and doing absolute nonsense for no purpose. Zelda wins, besides Breath of the Wild was the one to win Game of the Year.
For me personally, from all that I've heard from this video and many other videos about Odyssey, and breath of the wild. I think that Mario would be best for me
As a person biased to Zelda games, I actually prefer Super Mario Odyssey. The sole amount of creative gameplay and beautiful textures just makes the game great. On a standpoint of BotW, I still loved the game, but I kind of wish that the game was more traditional Zelda. Also I wish that the divine beasts were better than they were.
i love both but i think im going with botw just because it was so open world and i could explore what i wanted and with smo i went trough it like a breeze and the bosses are really easy in smo in botw the bosses are really cool and sometimes pretty hard and i liked both games but lets be honest..... you can’t compare with botw
I prefer Mario. I grew up with it, and in my opinion is better then botw and the previous 3D games like galaxy 1 and 2. I haven’t played it and maybe I would love it, (I watched it) but for me Mario is my all time favorite because I actually enjoy watching/playing it.

Honestly, I played both and got bored with Mario. It was the same thing every level just run around and collect moons. Yawn. BOTW kept me intrigued for over 100 hours and is my favorite game I’ve ever played. So much to do and explore, simply amazing.
Look Odyssey is awesome,it’s bright a steady story,and fresh mechanics to the series,though other than some mechanics, it’s very cliche. Beating it wasn’t rewarding after like 6 hours.Beating Zelda was. And Odyssey has more to do after you beat it, it does not compare to Zelda’s quests, shrines, DLC.
Breath of the Wild was very good, but had so many flaws that eventually I couldn’t play any more. I made it about 70 hours.... The Shrines were so cold and stale. Not a fan. The weapons breaking all the time drove me insane. Foolishly, I kept pressing on thinking the Master Sword would be a different story :(. Good game, I just wish I could mod it to make it playable for me.
Zelda, Breath of the wild was my first ever Zelda game and My gosh it was good. The music was stunning and sometimes I would listen to things like Revali’s and Mipha’s theme all day long. The graphics are incredible especially for a Legend of Zelda game. Overall, this is my 3rd favourite game of all time. Number 2 is a bit harder but I have to go with Super Mario odyssey. The story and adventure gimmick is remarkable and do I need to say more? But my number 1 favourite video game of all time HAS TO BE Mario + Rabbits Kindom battle. I had a blast playing that game and the difficulty progression is spot on. Though a bit frustrating a times, I kinda like that aspect of challenge. Thank you Nintendo for all the amazing games you realised in 2017. Thank you 👐
I’ve always been a huge Zelda fan until breath of the wild. It wasn’t a Zelda game. It was a dumbed down Skyrim with 4 very similar dungeons. Mario odyssey was amazing and was a true mario game with so much new mechanics with cappy

Well if that's the case then I feel like that the developers didn't appreciate the Zelda-franchise for what it was, because apparently they didn't want to continue the series to its full glory and sadly the abnormal fans of Breath of the Wild are seeing this the same. But to be fair these aren't the real Zelda-Fans. I believe that there are still Zelda-Fans, who are loyal to the franchise and sharing my point of view about Breath of the Wild. But when I look throughout the comments here, I am not so sure about that (don't misunderstand me: I don't mean comments like from Bryce V here). So maybe with the next Zelda game (hopefully not a game like Breath of the Wild all over again, because then the Zelda-franchise is truly ruined), things are going to get better like in the old days, before the whole Breath of the Wild madness.
reallyLink I don't think the intent was to not appreciate the past games. I just think they wanted to try something different. They've followed the same formula since A Link To The Past so I don't blame them for going in a completely different direction. I don't think it's fair though to state that all people who are fans of Breath of the Wild aren't real Zelda fans. I love BotW, yet I love Majora's Mask, A Link To The Past, Link's Awakening, and Wind Waker as well. There's plenty of other people as well who adore the past games but also love BotW. Liking one game doesn't make them non Zelda fans On the topic of the next Zelda returning to the previous formula, they've recently stated that's not the case and the formula the old games had is completely behind them. So the next Zelda is likely a sequel to BotW

I had more hours in BOTW, but hours aren't everything. I had probably half the hours in odyssey, but I vividly remember every single part of the game. I can't remember anything but the beginning, getting the master sword, and the ending in BOTW.
