IMO they did a pretty decent job at making 2nd Smithy and his backdrop look pretty creepy. A lot of its uncanniness came from the lowpoly-ness of the original, so I was worried the remake would lose that touch. Smithy’s first form doesn’t look too bad either.
They animated his eyes in a way that keeps a sense of the original’s animation, quickly shifting around in most of the forms(I think the tank is the only one where they stay still), and I think that helps give it that uncanny feeling. Subtle but effective detail
Yeah the 2nd phase Background was Quite Bizarre on the Snes, but now on the Remake i was able to understand that was a kind of junkyard where Smithy Discarded his previous forged heads.
I love this ending and I didn't expect it to be a better ending than the original. It was always sad to see Geno go, but it's also really touching that Mallow grabbed Geno's body.
It never occurred to me that the sledge was supposed to be Smithy's signature move. The way his intro includes it to solidify that distinction and to intimidate both new and veteran players is brilliant.
Back in the old days, the first time I encountered Smithy, he opened his mouth all creepy and Sledge was the move he used right out of the gate and it scared the crap out of me for some reason. That memory has never left me lol
That ending part of the credits... Man they made it even heartwarming in the remake. It shows the main characters all together (instead of just Mario and Peach as it was in the original) watching the fireworks, and Geno flying high into the sky.
@@poweroffriendship2.0When I was a kid it bothered me that we went from this to SM64 where they're enemies again. Was hoping Smithy would be the new Big Bad, like Dark Matter in the Kirby games after Dedede became an ally. Obviously that didn't happen lol
@@loregasmic Yeah. I think Bowser went back from being the main baddie since it's part of his routine. Plus, RPG Mario isn't the same Mario from SM64 and the main Mario timeline.
I think the original second Smithy background was scarier because the lower quality left more to your imagination, but it looked great in the remake IMO.
17:48 I'm pretty shocked that they didn't remake the Parade sequence, but like, i think it works a beautiful callback of that wonderful moment at the end of this GLORIOUS game. And of course, i really liked the modernized versions of Smithy's fight themes, specially phase 2. Edit: But then during the night sequence, they actually turned into 3D. Pretty cool detail there Nintendo Guy.
@@gooeydude574The only negative thing I had with the game. Especially when you have all characters in your party if you go into the menu it looks like there would be space for one more character. I got excited thinking we may get Luigi in this remake.
So THAT'S what the second phase arena is: a scrapyard! I thought it was just an eldritch location, like when Griffin became the king of demons and made faces appear across the land and sky.
The original Smithy probably spearheaded an industrial revolution, and went overboard with it. The current one creates weapons to conquer other worlds for their resources.
I have two theories: either he is just one king among many of others of his own species that preceeded him, or he has been defeated before, and all those times he has tried to conquer other worlds and lost, he ended up beheaded, so his minions have to create him a new head (this is plausible considering his own minions try to calm him down because of his "blood pressure").
This game was my first experience with any style of RPGs, being too young to understand thier mechanics until the late 90's. The characters and story drew me in like nothing else. Happy to see it shine again.
The moment I saw the trailer for the remake, it felt like I just saw an old friend I haven't seen since my childhood... the only thing I could say was "Welcome back" And now that I've seen the ending, I found myself saluting as I recalled all the fond memories of playing this game after school on the Super Nintendo. Nintendo, I dare say this is the best remake I have ever seen. Thank you for keeping the original charm and emotional aspects.
12:57 Geno: And I'm proud to have achieved such privilege here in this world. I'm afraid I can't stay here forever, but I'm a star warrior, as I'm only called when there's a much bigger job to be done, and not for everything in this world. I love you all dearly and will continue to support you all to no end, but I must return back home to the stars above. I want to understand - this isn't goodbye, but we'll meet again one day. Until that day, let's continue to make the world peace!
The hardest part about this fight is not accidentally killing the boss while waiting for him to switch to all his heads so I can Thought Peek all of them.
I always wondered how Smithy 2nd would look like in 3D and I was not dissapointed! I never knew he hammered his OWN head to transform! EDIT: I have seen the original and I never noticed the impact of the hammer hitting his head, but that was because the hammer hitting the head was slower than putting it down. So that was weird to me once I looked it closely.
Epico como los jefes tienen una escena introductoria antes de pelar contra ellos. Tambien me encanta como hicieron que al vencer al Smithy fase 2, el escenario si se ve destruido. Hasta el mas minimo detalle se animaron a poner!
I beat the original about a year ago, and smithy's realm is kinda creepy. Like, it's just a freaky factory in the middle of space and time that attaches onto worlds and floods it with enemies
I read some comments than this second phase in the remake is more creepy than the original, but i dont think so. In the original the background was an endless room full of heads everywhere, while here is just an enclosed space with some heads. Still looks good, but the original was scarier.
I'm going to mention something unrelated, Peach's hand can't be feeling good after smacking the daylights out of tankhead Smithy so many times. This is true to the original like I remember seeing on cartridge for rent in blockbuster in the 90s.
I bought this game a few days ago and it only took me a couple of days to beat it. I honestly found the Smithy battle to be more epic than it ever was years ago.
@@loregasmic If you haven't noticed, Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi have their own passionate communities. You don't have to put them down just because your passion is for Mario RPG. Would like a Mario RPG 2 as well, but who knows if we''ll get that what with Mario RPG seemingly needing to be a team-effort between Nintendo and Square.
17:11 this has got to be an earthbound reference... the camera is almost the exact same! Which makes this all the more tear jerking because I played Earthbound and Super Mario RPG side by side! Ahh, this ending is so beautiful
@@kevindavis296from how they made the arena look in the remake I got more the feel that smithy is more like some kinda race of thwomp-like ore creature that can both reshape itself as well as create more of itself + minions. I'm also kinda just assuming that the other Smithy heads are past King Smithys
Switching in battle it's a huge advantage. Original game you just have 3 to fight, you have to choose wisely to win. Usually I chose Peach for support and Mario & Bowser to attack with special attack.
The wizard for I never realized, until way later, is Aghamin from Zelda: A Link to the Past! It's a crossover, just like there was a picture of Mario in the Zelda game also!
Im the only one who notices in the background of the 2nd fase there's the pogo sword from claymorton, bowyer, and the weapons of speardovich and the awem rangers?
Come at me, NOW!. I'll crush you ALL. -"The quotable Smithy" RAAAAAAAAAAAGH! -"The Wit and Wisdom of Smithy" This tank needs no engine to move. It's powered by my will. -"The Man Called Smithy" I meant to say, "I'll seal you all in this casket!" but I ended up sealing myself in. -"Learn from a Tyrant's Mistakes!" Miracle transformation! ☆ I'll cast my manacle magic on your heart! -"Magical Boy Smithy! ☆" Convert head to treasure-box mode! "Surprise On Opening?" toggle ON! -"Smithy's One Simple Secret"
the intro to this battle is a lot better than the one on the snes in that one all the characters just merge back into mario and he jumps at smithy by himself, with this one however everyone remains outside of mario and face smithy down together
What a difference age is . When i was a kid i spent the whole game leveling genos offense . It destroyed my defense and made it incredibly difficult to win. This time as an adult i leveled out peaches defense and made her ridiculously durable. It allowed her to almost permanently assist the other characters. I destroyed smithy with almost no effort😂 . Didint even need a single pick me up item. Was always able to use peaches " come back"
I was way over leveled by the time I got to Smithy and breezed through both phases. It doesn't bother me too much though. I used to struggle with this in the original so I feel like I've paid my dues. Nintendo did a fantastic job with this remake!
This is my opinion on what mario, mallow bowser and peach are thinking after geno leaves! Mario: well.... so long old friend... Mallow: (sniff) goodbye geno...... i will miss you...(sniff sniff) Bowser: goodbye old chum it was nice knowing you... Peach: bye bye geno hope to see you very soon hope you come and visit!
I don't know, Mario has always been a children's game, but the animations in this remake make it much more childish and less serious, I prefer the original
Isnt the tank form weak against lightning, the mage form strong against magic and armor strong against melee? Or am i remembering wrong or did thry change that in new one?
