SUPER MARIO RPG (First Thoughts) - Happy Console Gamer 

My buddy used to think RPG stood for “Red Plumber Guy”.

Born in '82. My buddy and me were really into Mario, Zelda, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 6, all that good stuff. My parents didn't own a car so i used to read gamemagazines while travelling on the train. I saw an article about a new Mario game made by Square and got super excited but it wouldn't release in Europe. A few months later i was in Amsterdam during a holiday and in a gameshop i found an American version of SMRPG. Bought it with a PAL-converter and finished it multiple times. Best game ever haha. Now to have the possibilitie to play the remake together with my kids is just f*ing awesome. Good times John. Greetings from the Netherlands

My memory of the game starts when I'm in 8th grade and I walk into a Kmart and they were selling the players guide for like 99 cents so I bought it. I poured over this book for years. Then in sophomore year I bought an SNES from a buddy and loved it. Sometime later walked into a pawn shop and found Mario RPG in an unopened box for 5 dollars! I snatched that baby up and played it all the way through! One of my favorite SNES games of all time!

It's so weird that I love turn-based RPG's so much now, but I can still remember my brother renting the original back when it first came out in the 90's. I was pretty young (under 10) and I remember it confused the heck out of both of us. Why would they make Mario like this? It was the first turn-based RPG we'd ever seen. We did end up having some fun with it though. Within a year or two we got pretty heavily into FFVII and then went down the rabbit hole. Now I love Super Mario RPG. It's so good. I was glad to find some of its DNA in Sea of Stars. This new version is exciting. It looks so good.

This was the first RPG I ever played. It's a great introduction into the genre. From there I went to Chrono Trigger, then FF6 and the rest is history

I'm so pumped for this! The original was my introduction to the RPG genre, so it's very dear to me. Love the faithful look and feel of this.

This game was my Literal childhood, I was born in 2001 and very thankful for my dad for showing me and letting me experience this game. I owe my love for JRPGS because of super Mario RPG! What a banger of a game

This is one of my favorite games of ALL TIME! I really, really appreciate that Nintendo did it justice in the same vein as Live A Live. This is what a remake should be. Take notes, Squeenix.

Had this game growing up, definitely one of my favorites. Lost it over the years but my brother got me a SNES copy for a birthday to add to my collection. Can't wait to play the remake, gonna be a nostalgia trip for sure!!

I remember playing the original when I was like 4, I was instantly frustrated because it wasn’t the same (I was used to Mario 1-3 & Mario World). All these years later, I’ve heard so much positive things about this game and I am excited to finally be able to jump into this one.

Absolutely I'm excited! Not only to re-experience it all with a facelift, to hear the fantastic music and such but also hopefully to re-challenge that certain special cameo boss (no spoilers!) that was so cool back then!

Easily one of the best SNES games. Cult classic. Very excited for this one.

This was the one JRPG that I was wishing for. After I gave up on finding an unopened/unused Japan release (which is just called Super Mario RPG there) copy for my collection, I felt like it was a long shot for a remake. Which has me looking forward to both having it AND playing it once I get my new Switch OLED set up. 🙂

Playing on the ol CRT in High School brings back some memories I got mine on pre order drops tomorrow im pumped!

The original never got an official local release in my country so I’ll be happy to finally buy the damn thing.

I’m so excited to be able to relive this game in an updated setting. Me, now 35, and my brother, now 33, spent so much time together figuring out all the secrets, upgrading out characters and just trying to beat the final boss. It was our first RPG and it’s what spiraled me to get into more RPGs as I got older. Very excited that we can switch the soundtracks back and forth as nothing hits like the OG.

This game is what older brothers and older cousins used to play. This game was a masterpiece back in 1996.

I'm glad they kept the pal snes pad colours to select attacks. Weren't Square(soft) involved in the original game? Were they involved this time?

Absolutely great to see Nintendo reach out to you to talk about this preview. Despite Super Mario RPG not coming out in the UK originally, I got to play it on Wii over a decade ago and it was a really fun experience. Personally the early 3D style especially mode 7 has aged more than other games of the era and a beautiful graphical upgrade for current audiences is great to see. I appreciate that they are retaining the original game but adding new features like classic/modern controls and soundtrack, cutscenes and making everything more cohesive with the world map rather than reimagining it. It doesn't really need it when it's still as entertaining and fun as ever but definitely could be more responsive and be given a whole new look with today's technology. Might be weird to hear but I actually haven't watched anything after the reveal of the game to see mostly everything fresh but the only thing that concerns me is the damage to all enemies when getting timed hits. I hope it is rebalanced around this and I do wonder why use AoE attacks like Mallow's Thunder move if you can damage everything already? I am not actually watching footage of the game so I can't say in practice how this will change things. They at least confirmed harder boss rematches but I hope normal is at least the same as the original. Might have to wait for reviews to see if this change makes it too easy. Regardless I want to support this game not just to show interest for Mario RPGs but also the possibility of Mario RPG 2 as there is no better opportunity. I'm sure it will still be well worth playing and love that many more new players will finally get to experience this game. Such a memorable and charming adventure from start to end.

Born at 92 here. This is the first game ever who brought me a tear two times. The first one when I finished it with my brothers (I used to play with my 2 brothers and my sister), and the second one was at the announcement. Cant contain my hype

I used to speed run this game along with link to the past in the mid-nineties. Now in 2023, I can replay them both on my Switch. What a time to be alive!

As someone who hasn't played too much of the original, it seems amazing. The only thing I actually dislike is the perfect attack doing damage to the other enemies. I'd prefer more of a challenge.

This game is core memories for me. I marked a copy at blockbuster with a sharpie so I could re-rent the same copy over and over until I eventually beat it

Still have my SNES copy from all those years ago, but haven't played it since. I've always looked at it and said to myself, "I gotta play this again", but just haven't got around to it (blame it on the backlog) yet. I have it pre-ordered and should be done with FFXVI around the time I get my copy. Yes, I can't wait!

I got the original game for Christmas the year it was released. This was my first RPG, so using health items in battle was completely new to me.

I can't wait to play through this remake. I just added a Blockbuster rental case with a sticker on it for Super Mario RPG to my Blockbuster collection! Now I have to find a crappy box for the game to cut and put into the rental case. 😀

Not a big RPG fan by any stretch but I loved the original game on Super Nintendo and completed it many years after release when I finally got a copy. Looking forward to this release

I can't wait for my copy to arrive. I played this game so much when it was new, to the point that when my local video store was liquidating their SNES games in the late 90s I chose to buy this used over my number two pick which was Chrono Trigger.

Got my copy today. Never played the original. Never had the N64. I’m glad they released this new one and gave me a chance to play it.

I'm excited for this but I'm worried it'll be made too easy with the special team moves and other things. But visually, it looks great. The music. Everything is spot on.

I'm absolutely excited to replay SMRPG with a nice facelift :) I even played through most of the original recently to refresh my memory of just how great of a game it is.

I am really happy that this game got a full HD remake! I got the cartridge from a friend when I borrowed it from him and he never asked for it back. I still have that original cartridge, and even put in a new button battery because my saved file when I tried to start a replay a few years ago did not save. I am currently in the middle of another replay of the game, and have beaten it once before. I loved this game when it first came out, but it was a very steep curve to get into it compared to other RPGs I had ever played, and also because I was so into the side scrolling Mario games that it took a while for me to warm up to this game in all respects. It is truly one of the best RPGs ever created, and I love the tongue in cheek breaking the fourth wall humor of this game! It is a rewarding game for timing-based attacks, and it is so Mario! Since I still have the original cartridge in perfect working order, and I'm playing it, it may be years before I ever decide to check out this new HD remake, but the Nintendo Direct and the other gameplay footage I've seen from it, warms my heart and I look forward to playing it at some point.

Dude, the snes game was a masterpiece. Im waiting this new game so much and maybe a super mario rpg 2 with this amazing characters in future! Greetings!

Ever since my dive into classic JRPGs, I’ve always wanted to play Super Mario RPG, much more so than the M&L and Paper Mario games. With no disrespect to those two series, a Squaresoft style Mario RPG really sounds amazing. Can’t wait to finally play it this month, and hopefully there will be more from this game in the future. Side Note: I would absolutely LOVE a Kirby RPG like this! That one especially has been long overdue.

My imported copy back then was broken and so I never finished it. Still LOVED it. SO CAN‘T WAIT!

I am a light weight gamer. I like RPGs/JRPGs (Bravely Default, Dragon Quest, Fire Emblem), puzzle games, I am not good at the Hop, jump, & bounce games, so I haven't' played many Mario games - but looks like fun. I may get brave and try it.

I never played the original. I actually held off from purchasing it virtually in hopes that Nintendo would remake it, and they answered my wish. I'm looking forward to playing it!

First rpg I played to the end about 20 some odd years ago. This game made me a jrpg fanatic. This was the game that made me buy a ps1 for ff7.

I’m 44 i was around when this game was released. Unfortunately I live in Australia and it never came here. So I’m excited to finally play it.

I've been wanting to play this game for like twenty years. I downloaded an emulator but never started it. Now I don't have to. I'm so happy this game is coming out. We'll have a portable option too!

I'm already testing on the Switch "Pro". I'm loving it! Definitely will be picking a physical copy of this masterpiece!

Fun fact this is the first game since Mario 64 (besides smash) where they allowed Mario to straight up punch enemies.

I'm grateful they're doing a near 1:1 faithful remake. Part of me wishes they add some additional areas and characters. Maybe they're keeping it a surprise, but it would set the internet ablaze if Luigi or Wario hidden characters to unlock. Even a new hidden superboss or ending would be nice.

I played the original in middle school only because it said Super Mario. It led me to Chrono Trigger, FF6(3), Secret of Mana, etc... I'll be buying this game to the max! Nimbus Land music... can't wait to here the new version.

I have played through the original no idea HOW many times now. Absolutely love it, and am absurdly excited for this glorious remake. Just two more weeks of struggling to wait for this thing to get released. Can't wait for week after next. Glad we are already pretty late in the current week!

My love for rpgs didn’t start until FF7, I was 16 at the time. Before that my gaming only consisted of fighting games in arcades and consoles, all of them, capcom, snk, namco, etc. now a days (old ass 43 year old) most of what I play are rpgs whenever I have the time. I never played Mario RPG so I’ll def play it now

I have only played the demo at a kiosk, back when it was on the SNES. To see this classic return, is excellent.

I grew up with an NES & then N64, but weirdly had a 3DO during the SNES/GEN era... so I missed all those great SNES classics aside from a handful I got to play at friends' houses. Mario RPG was one of the big ones I desperately wanted to play but didn't have access to, and I still never got around to it all these years later. And even though I enjoyed Paper Mario 64 & TTYD, they never lived up to what I saw of Mario RPG back in the day. This is pretty much the only remaining Switch game I'm interested in (other than Metroid Prime 4), and the only game that could break me out of my Mushroom Kingdom burnout. Even as a Mario fan, I've been all Mario'd out, but Mario RPG Remake is the exception!

It would have been REALLY KOOL if they would have included the original graphics as a toggle, like DragonQuest XI did.

I beat the original Super Mario RPG game on Snes. I'm looking forward to playing the Super Mario RPG remake launching next week for switch.

There's no way I'm gonna buy this at full retail price so I think I'm gonna get my friend's wife to buy it for me from Hong Kong where it is being sold at about $298 Hong Kong dollars. That's about $50 American dollars. I suggest yall do the same. Hong Kong version is using the same rom so yes, it is in English when your system is set to English.

Unfortunately the game was not released in Europe in the 1990s. So I could play the game first time on the Wii Virtual Console in 2008, but I played only a few hours. This year one of my goals was to finish the game first time and then they announced a remake. Perfect time I think! :D

This game never saw a European release originally. I picked an import of it up back in the day from a specialist shop in London (this was back when the internet was in its infancy remember, and you couldn't just buy one online) but I could never get it to work with any adapters on a PAL SNES. I had to shelve it for a few years, then I specifically bought an NTSC SNES while on holiday in Toronto in 1999, dirt cheap, and brought it back just so I could play it. Luckily my CRT tv at the time back then was also NTSC/60hz compatible too, otherwise I'd have been playing it in black and white. lol

Mario RPG is a masterpiece, I used to play this game for hours. Nintendo made an Amazing bringing this game back to the Switch!

I'm so glad that we have the option to use the original music. From the videos I've seen, the modern music sounds good, but feels a little too "in your face" if that makes sense.

I'm definitely so looking forward to this remake that's going to be released on the day of my 29th birthday. I'm sure it will be as critically acclaimed as the original!

Wow. I can't wait to get Mario RPG for Christmas. I never played the original Mario RPG so I had no idea that it was a turn-based RPG until I watched this video. I thought it was going to be an action RPG. I am 46 years old and I have hated turn-based RPGs for most of my life until I played Dragon Quest 11 and Yakuza Like a Dragon 2 years ago. Since then I have played Pokemon Arceus Legends, Persona 5, Octopath Traveler 1&2, Soul Hackers 2, Shin Megami Tensi 3&5, Pokemon Scarlet, Bravely Default 2, Atelier Sophie 2, Trails of Cold Steal IV, and a few other turn-based RPGs. I have been waiting for another good turn-based RPG so I can't wait to play Mario RPG.

Never played this one but always loved the Mario back in time and all the rpg games. Been playing all day. It’s a solid 10/10 for me
