My younger brother always loved playing this game on Super Nintendo & even when it got re-released to Game Boy Advance. It was 1 of his favorites on both consoles. We both grew up on the Super Nintendo version & we spent some time during childhood to play it together & that lasted for hours. Sadly, late Tuesday night of last week, my younger brother lost his battle with stomach & esophageal cancer that he had for months. Anytime I play this game, I will always think of my younger brother, how he loved playing this game & the fun we had playing it together. He also loved Super Nintendo games such as Mario Paint & Mortal Kombat II.

I think you were spot on with regard to the cape. If you're just interested in beating the game with minimum fuss, then sure, fly through a level and reach the goal, but really the fun of this game is exploring the levels and seeing the crazy platforming concoctions that they come up with at Nintendo. One of my favourite things to do in Super Mario World was to try and find all the Dragon coins in a level. While there was no bonus for doing so, it just felt really satisfying, like I'd fully explored and experienced everything the level had for me.

I always went back and forth between my NES & SNES playing both Super Mario 3, and Super Mario World back when the SNES had just come out, but then Mario All-Stars came out and man was it awesome playing Mario 3 on my SNES, not just because it was convenient, but the remastered visuals & sound made it feel like a full blown SNES release rather than just a remake.

I remember as a kid when I got this game playing it on my dads big TV, the scrolling backgrounds made the games feel so big and wide open. Keep in mind I was use to playing NES games that had relatively flat backgrounds and stages. In SMW their was a sense of depth beyond the foreground that put me right in the game, much like how 3D games today make you feel like your in it.

With saying the game was never about the challenge, but the fun and exploration aspects and that you could play it in sooo many different ways you just nailed it! It's a very early example of Open Game Design as I'd call it, where the focus isn't about the challenge but about the fun you can have with a game and that's what makes it such a great and timeless classic game. And even IF you want the challenge, Star World and Secret World are also there for you. It's just perfect in every single way and has aged very well.

JJ C Super Mario World also has it's problems. They are way bigger than problems in Mario 3. Level design in SMW is biggest problem. When half of levels in game are empty, bland, boring or copy-paste, I cannot see how SMW is even considered best Mario game of all time.
@jjc4924
@jjc4924 6 лет назад
Joonas, I whole hardly disagree. The level designs in World are far better than Mario 3 and it doesn't bore me at all. They're well crafted and more balanced. The only problem I have with World are the boss fights, mostly the Koopalings. They are pathetically easy than what they we're in Mario 3 and that's saying alot. The rest about World is fantastic and well balance for a 2D Mario game than Mario 3. I like Mario 3 don't get me wrong, but it's not perfect and same can be said about World. But to me, World is slightly perfect in many ways.

Your video helped me realize something-although similar games, SMB3 feels like the pinnacle of an older attitude of games comprising concrete challenges, whereas SMW appeals more to a newer attitude that responds to a smoother gamefeel. I think that's basically the dividing line in whether a fan likes Mario 3 or Mario World better. I'm more of a challenge gamer and therefore in the Mario 3 camp, but I understand the appeal of SMW a little more upon reflection.

It's a great game but that is an absurd statement. There is no such thing. A person can have a favorite game, but there is not any way to arguably measure "best game of all time". The fact is, few people would even name this as their single favorite game. Some, sure, a decent amount, but no more than dozens of other games, and probably a lot less than some. Again great game, but it's not even the best game on the SNES, my opinion, can hardly be called best of all time.

You can make a compelling argument for it. For a game to beat the GOAT, it has to be something people had access to en masse. SMW being a launch title accomplished that. It should be replayable. SMW is still fun to this day to just pick up and play. It should be user friendly...the controls are amazing. And yeah, it should be fun and compelling. It absolutely checks that box.

It's only cool because of the special items though. Honestly I rarely end up using the regular items, seems a bit pointless. It is a good way to give out the special items though, so you can choose when you want to use it. But SNES kinda replaced all that with the Yoshi family.
@jjc4924
@jjc4924 6 лет назад
But Super Mario World does have an item box on your top screen where u can switch up to power ups anytime u want or if u get hit the power ups will comes toward u. And Yoshi is like a power up so there's no denying the fact which is a better concepts for item inventory.

@Bowhuntingskills Год назад
One point of contention - it has 96 exits, not 96 levels as often purported
@Katie-hb8iq
@Katie-hb8iq 2 года назад
This game adds so many improvements. There are more types of blocks, the overworld is actually something you can explore and manipulate - it's fun that you can replay levels and complete them differently to open up different exits. SMB3 didn't add that many new features - butt sliding, better power-ups, the overworld, the koopas, shell-throwing. But I'd say World added 20-30 new features even above this with yoshi and all the forms, the mechanic to run up walls, the spin jump, turtles flying out of their shells, climbing the switch fences, and so many others I can't even list them all. That cartridge was jam packed. I'm so glad Nintendo delayed the game for 1 year, because I saw the game prototype at the planned release date, and it was definitely not as polished.

SMW is great and I remember when it first came out. All the Yoshi power-ups made the game more interactive but I also became less interested in playing as Mario by himself. SMB3 is still the 👑 tho. The level design from world 2-8 is incredible and really climaxes in world 4 when you reach the clouds. Also the Racoon Suit and the Frog Suit and Hammer Suit guy and the Big Boot are the best Mario power-ups of all time. I also loved the card game and having an inventory of stuff to use was genius.

When Super Mario Bros 3 came to my video rental store, I was probably 4 years old? And I begged my uncle to rent it, even though I didn't have an NES at the time... but my neighbors did. I loved that game. But when I first saw an SNES and Super Mario World, it blew me away. My reaction to Mario 64 was pretty similar; but Super Mario World has aged even better, in my opinion. Most people I know say they prefer Mario 3 but Super Mario World is probably my fav SNES game (behind LttP). I loved unlocking secret stuff in the map. And I loved the cape. Sure, if you got great at the cape it might be a little cheat-y. But I played this with casual gamers, none of whom mastered the cape, so that was never an issue with me.

Haha. I'm glad I'm not the only one who raised an eyebrow at Drunk's "easy" comment. While I certainly don't think it's the toughest SNES game - it seemed, like many of the best Nintendo produced games, to have a good balance of difficulty and fun - I would never call it easy. But Drunk seems like a pretty skilled hardcore gamer (he likes shooters for Chrissakes) and I've always been pretty mediocre to terrible for the most part. Turtles in Time, Super Metroid, and Zelda 3 were more my speed. Super Castlevania, while fun and waayy more forgiving than its predecessors - kicks my ass. 😅

I grew up with SMB3 and only played SMW at 20+ years old, and SMB3 wil always be in my heart and stay a fav of mine for ever (above SMW, nostalgia being a thing), but there is no denying SMW is above gameplay-wise. When you play SMW and go back to SMB3 you feel that the gameplay is way above in SMW. The cape, when mastered, is immensely overpowered. There was a grade-wide competition between all my buddies and others who got the SNES for Xmas the year it came out. And that was who could legit beat Mario World first. A kid lied and after myself a couple others heard from someone else that final boss Bowser wasn't as he described, eventually I got to it and confirmed as much. I was able to take the claim for it, in which we followed it up who could get the 100 for game completion. Don't think anyone ever did before the school year ended... I got close, but other games took away my attention.

One thing that people who think flying makes the game too easy don't realize is that in 1991-1993, most of us didn't have our own TVs yet. Flying took a while to figure out and "Nintendo Time" might be 30 minutes a night. Super Mario World might be easy for people who have all the maps online and can play as much as they want to---but that's not how we played at the time.

Nerdy correction: SMW did not have 96 levels, that's a misconception. The correct fact is that it has 96 stage exits, but the number of stages is closer to 90, which is still a lot.

I completed this dozens of times in the early 90's, and I'm still doing it today (though it strangely seems more difficult now). It's nothing short of a masterpiece.

hehe. I have to say, the cape feather powerup DOES break the game, though. I can fly the entire level for any level that isn't enclosed, including the auto-scrollers

As someone born years after the SNES era ended with only moderately recent experiences with the two games, I think I found SMB 3 to be the more enjoyable game. I can't really say exactly why, but it just felt better. It felt extremely ahead of its time as well, something you could more or less just update the graphics of and port straight to a modern console. That is of course true for SMW as well, but so was the case for many SNES games whereas I generally have a hard time enjoying most NES games due to how badly they've aged. SMB 3 did everything but age poorly. All that said, both games are terrific and any proper gamer should play both of them at some point.

The only games I have right now for my gba are mario bros 3 and smw and I prefer smw, but thats also nostalgia since it was my first game I ever played, but smb3 also seems outdated to me. The controls are a bit slippery and it is pretty hard and the gimmicks get obnoxious

Mario 3 is overrated honestly, but it's still a good game. World is so much better in many ways.

JJ C Level design and variety definitely aren't strong points in SMW. I'm not saying that game is overrated. It's good game but it gets more praise than it deserves.
@jjc4924

Joonas. Well so does Mario 3. Did u not see how many nostalgic that Mario 3 gets that reference or appears in every single Mario game? Mostly the New Super Mario Bros. series. Mario 3 gets way too much credit not knowing it's not that much of an perfect game. And yeah, I can say the same about World. But World had so much potential than what Mario 3 did. Again. There both amazing games. But I just think World did it a little better. And plus World's level designs is much more variety than how Mario 3 handles like being ice ice, desert desert & other things like that. Which they brought it back so many times in New Super Mario Bros & 3D Land alot & it gets old pretty enough. It's not Mario 3's fault. But the fans of the game is. It's almost as bad as Final Fantasy 7 was.

In my opinion, this is easily the best Mario game. Mario 3 is great, but this one kicks things up a notch. One thing that always bothers me is that when people compare the two, they claim that Mario 3 is bigger (72 unique levels in SMW vs. 88 in SM3), but the levels in World are sprawling, multi-exit affairs rather than the short and sweet levels of Mario 3; to my mind it makes the game more fun to explore.

As expansive and amazing as SMW is, I do think it's kind of the same relation that Odyssey holds to Galaxy: Mario 3 had much more creative level design, more compact but focused aesthetics, and more ingenious set pieces, while Odyssey had the quasi-open world expansiveness and feeling of endless secrecy. I personally think Mario 3 is the more consistently amazing experience, while a lot of SMW, while incredibly fun, doesn't strike me as aesthetically creative. It's an extension and refinement of a formula rather than a true quantum leap, which Mario 3 was.

MarioWorls stay back compare to Mario3 ... many customs for each eviroment, menu to carry items and use it any time on map, store shops to play cards and get items, individual fight ovrr map to getban item, diferent and more alive world with different stages inside bonus flying ships, hidden warps ...Mario World only got Yoshi and graphics in front of Mario 3. (its maybe just me, but MarioWorld is an step back from Mario3)

I respect your opinion, but in my opinion Mario World did so many things right that Mario 3 failed to tried in to make it a great game like the controls, level design, music & so many more. Also World doesn't had like an world and level that Mario 3 has like an grassy grass, snowy snow, deserted desert and other things like that.

JJ C Then Super Mario World has 2 grasslands, 2 undergrounds, twin bridges, forest, choco island, star and special worlds. Oh that creativity and variety with world themes. And level design is not "long, empty levels = better".

Flying in super mario world is in no way easy, it took me years to figure out how to make it work when I first played the game. And as someone who came to Super mario world as a complete novice, it's just the perfect introductory difficulty. Maybe people who were familiar with the franchise were expecting harder, but to me it's better than some of the frustrating moments of the previous Mario games (which to this day, I have still never beat)

Mario 64 is the best Mario game💯 🥇🏆 I would love a remake for the Switch, in Mario 64 I would get lost in those 3d worlds(Some the best levels ever in any Mario game) and it would keep me up all night until I would start to see the Sunrise then I was oh shit gotta get some rest so I can do again the next night.
