Super Meat Boy Forever Nintendo Switch Review!

this channel has gotten so ridiculously good with its reviews. i mean, you lot have always been talented, but at some point the channel ascended and has just become a sheer joy to behold. thanks so much for the consistently high quality content and happy holidays!

They made it look a lot more cartoony than what it was. Everything sparkles, twinkles, shines and glitters. I'll always choose the grim-looking brutalist design of the original over this.

When they said it had 7200 levels, i was a bit disappointed that they meant 7200 chunks. Like, yeah, having this random procedural generation it's cool and makes the game fresh, but, that doesn't mean your cool will last forever. It gets a little boring to experience the same music, backgrounds and mechanics all the time. The first game didn't have this, but because it was hard, you had plenty of time to experience something different until the end. This procedural concept takes away the point of completing the game. It can work with games like Spelunky 2 and even more with The Binding of Isaac, because unlocking new items between runs encourages the player to experience all the possible combinations, but I don't feel that excited about experiencing new chunks, because they may repeat again. In those games, the runs are more consistent and it's hard to make a good run due to the unpredictable behaviour, but this doesn't happen with super meat boy forever, you get used very quickly with the mechanics, so it's just repeating the same thing all the time. In conclusion, the game it's good, but I feel like if they had kept the old gameplay, the game would have more liberty and it would be more rewarding to complete. Like, literally, I don't feel that excited to complete the game from zero again like with Spelunky 2.

I didn't know this game existed! I just finished beating super meat boy today, and I just checked to see if it had a sequel only to find that the game released on the same day I beat the first one coincidentally! Sounds like I'm going to have to get used to new controls though.

I waited for this review before buying it! Edit: They should've kept the core gameplay intact and made the auto-generated levels to be post-game content. Also, I still miss the music from the original release.

Great review as always, probably gonna get it on a sale since I love the predecessor. The endless runner concept also doesn't sound too bad, as I had quite much fun with Super Mario Run for example. ^^ Anyway, almost forgot to wish you all a Merry Christmas! :D

I’ve been so excited for this game and have been enjoying it! The new control scheme isn’t my favorite, but I will say it creates a platforming experience that I’ve never had before, and that’s probably for the best. More of the same would have felt like just that! I think love for this game will grow over time.

Had to buy this on switch the minute it loaded on the store, 100%-ing the worlds: getting all A+ in both dark and light levels and getting all the bandaids(technically pacifiers, but sorry team meat, youll never be able to rename bandaids) in this title is freaking brutal and super rewarding. My thumbs have been destroyed since Christmas and i love how many of the same physics are all still in this one down to the finer details like the jump timings to sliding higher up a wall hitting it sooner after you leave the ground to clear a ledge slightly too hight to jump clean over from ground height, to distance clearing jump holds etc, but the inclusion of the new controls as well actually feels fantastic and realising some new physics that go with them like attack timing snaps and when to or when not to attack things, or jump jump dashing everywhere possible to build up gain time advantage through a level for the a+ or pressing down running off a ledge and releasing down different fractions of a second later to make meatboy come off at completely different downward angles in what felt like near impossible to accomplish chunks to beat then going on to some other mad combo in the same chunk right after has kept things fresh and exciting, if nothing else the bigger levels seem a lot more like a logical progression from the tiny levels of meatboy 1 and a worthy expansion imho, i also completely agree with the reviewer in that it wont be for everyone if they loved meatboy 1 +cant adapt to change +never completed it, but part of me feels like its worth giving a chance and that with bigger levels the intention of removing free movement may have been quite a good idea to keep things going and keep you moving through things with a pace that really if you were playing meatboy 1 properly you should feel familiar with anyway. I dont get the washed out bit trip runner vibes i was worried about at all especially with all the back and forth. As i get deeper and deeper in to this game I’ve even started to forget that its all on rails as i progress into the dark levels plotting frame perfect jump combinations in some of the chunks which have honestly been really really elaborate but the good old meatboy feel of bashing your head against them long enough seems to always shine light on how the stages were meant to be progressed through, the control difference hasn’t changed that for me, so far nothing has been impossibly bug blocked for me either and this game still has all the finger numbness and satisfaction i was missing for so long after 106%-ing the first game, if youre in that boat and missed having meatboy levels to beat stop reading this, buy it, evolve. this game is fantastic and more than fills the meatboy sized void i was filling with things like celeste and playing bit trip runner 2 as dr fetus. So 11/10 for a follow up game from me especially from having no more meatboy 1 left to play :)

I enjoyed the first meat boy, and I love platformers, but I'm very iffy about the autorun mechanic. Maybe I'll try out the game when it goes on sale.

I've been a fan of the original since 2010. Played roughly through half of this game and its surprisingly fun for an autorunner. Feels like SMB, it's well designed, and yes - boss fights are amazing.

When I was 11 I beat 106% on super meat boy and I’m so exited to beat this game.

I am a hardcore fan of the first one which I bought 3 times on different platforms and I will definitely try this one to try the new recipe.

Hope it suceed's Dr. Mario (the better Tetris imo), which I loved playing on Gameboy some decades ago... Also recommend Bio-Prototype, cheap but longlasting autobattler fun due to infinite-ish combinations. Cheers!

With how good the first one was its probably still worth picking up and ill just have to get used to the new controls. It was definitely worth waiting for a few reviews of it.

From what I’ve played from a friends copy of the OG, I’ve had enough meaty deaths haha. Perhaps they can introduce a future update to cater to those desires for older mechanics

Way to give it a chance. Honestly I liked the original 360 game but playing the end is nigh more recently I am not sure if I was up for such a precision platformer on the Switch. I'll buy it on sale like everyone else thinking about getting it now.

It does look frustratingly hard. I usually play the same stage 10 times and then give it a break. Guess I will never be able to get through with that attitude. Am I going to buy it. Hell yeah! The music allow sounds awesome!

Got the pc version and agree with your points. I think that the runner controls make the game MORE difficult and still stuck on the first boss after loads of attempts. So the difficulty curve is definitely more brutal than the original and I'm sure it's way easier to throw and break your lovely switches! So beware ...

Let him know New Star Manager just went on sale, its one of my guilty pleasures and I already own it on a few different platforms so I picked it up as soon as I got the email saying it was on sale. It's a Soccer (Football) management sim with less depth than Football Manager but it has these little events during the match where you play your players in real time (kinda). Another one on sale now is Soccer Tactics and Glory, in UK its called Football Tactics and Glory and its this weird game that's a combination of Xcom and a management sim.

Haha damnn 113 attempts for one boss. I think I remember hundreds of deaths in Celeste and I still really loved that game. The hand drawn segments in this game look amazing btw - might pick it up on sale to check those out and die a few hundred times trying to beat it.

A launch day buy for me purely from resect for team meat - S M B is in a 3 way tie with Celest and the End is Nigh for my all time favourite platformer and when Devs do such amazing work you have to show them your wallet as it's the best way to say thanks. The frame drops are a bit concerning though. Hope they get that fixed.

I really wonder why they went with this 'endless runner' style design choice. The first game was GREAT, and this game looks gorgeous, but IDK if I'm down with not being able to fully control Meat Boy's movement. 🤔

I'm digging this! Weirdly enough I didn't enjoy SMB that much even though Celeste and The End is Nigh are among my favourite games. I prefer this art style a lot more as well, and the autorunner thing is a nice change, as I haven't played one since Geometry Dash

...Runner3 doesn't have split screen multiplayer. It's a single-player game too. They experimented with the multiplayer idea during development but ultimately scrapped it and thought it was better as a single-player experience.

I’m playing AVGN 2 Deluxe on easy and that’s hard enough for me haha

I've really enjoyed it so far. It's so hard and died 100 times. I was worried about runner concept but has worked for. I've died literally 100's times. Ransome procedure does add endless levels. It's not worse or better then the original but I'm still on 2nd world. Maybe my opinon will change.

What I got from this review is: Start with Super Meat Boy. Never played any of those so might be easier to jump into the series right?

I like a good challenge but man i hate gravity flipping stuff in games like upside-down and flipped controls. I hate those parts!

there is so much about this game that has me interested. then there is the fact it is an endless runner... i am a platformer fan. i like precise and well defined controls. endless runners by their very nature are out of the players control. i think this move was a bad one to make. i may still get it, but i don't think i will beat it 100% like i did with the original.

Great review sir. Feel like I’ve been waiting for this game forever, no pun intended. Coding in procedural generation for a tight SMB platformer must have been absolute INSANE, and it’s a shame this element leaves so much to be desired.

So I was REALLY looking forward to this one until....I heard they changed the mechanics and made it an endless runner. I caught some gameplay last night and although they are very forgiving with the respawn locations, I was disappointed with the runner aspect. That is going to be a deal breaker for me which is sad since Super Meat Boy is a great franchise so why did they feel they needed to go and change it. Not broke, don't fix it.....

Honestly, I never played the first one, despite hearing nothing but great things. I do suck at platformers, but after watching this I'm not sure that I want to handle the auto run. I know the concept is move quick, but I'd like a moment to get my head around what's going on. And god, procedural generation... I see the 're-playable aspect', but yeah... no...

Looks like a good game idk if i’ll pick it up tho I only have 120 dollars

Can't help but looking at this and feel like it was originally made for mobile. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, there are good mobile games...but that's really not what I want for a Super Meat Boy sequel.

Endless runner... What were they thinking

A Great Endless Runner - but only a decent Meat Boy Triquel

Kinda painfully easy for a Super Meat Boy game. The closest the game has to "difficulty" is throwing so much at you as you're running through an area that you don't know where to go, and as such just kinda randomly jump, fall or go back and forth until you either figure it out or die. It's not a game where you're aware of the crazy risks and trying to puzzle out the path, but rather a game where the only risks is that you can't stop moving.

So there is 7200 chunks ?

Best £5 I ever spent. Such a great game.

I don't like the idea of the procedurally generated levels. It's fine in some games but not in this one.

I was genuinely thinking of buying it until I found out it was an autorunner, I don't like the lack of control those types of platformers have.

Waaaay too hard for me! The first had me throwing the controller after about 15mins, absolutely hated it and this looks worse. You have to be a special kind of gamer to cope with these type of games. Merry Christmas everyone

The game started life as a mobile game, that's why they decided to make it an endless runner. They should have changed it once they decided to make it a full fledged release. Hate to say it, but it's a deal-breaker for me. The first meat boy is on sale at the moment for switch at its lowest point ever... So I'll just get that and replay it.

Been a fan of the original since the Newgrounds days. Still haven't beaten super in its entirety. I'm glad i didn't blindly buy this because I think i'd have been instantly turned off by it being an on-rails type runner. I'll have to give it a bit of thought first.
