Best moment of the marathon was the crowd getting behind Behemoth. Here is a GDQ newcomer, had a fundraiser done just to get him over here, and he puts on an awesome performance. Here's to seeing him at AGDQ 2017 and beyond!
Wow, when oats died and behemoth just started the final area at roughly the same time. The feels, the hype, the pressure, this was definitely a memorable run.
Oats 42:10 WR Zoast 42:10 TWR Behe 42:45 Sweet 43:20 Oats and Zoast were the favorites coming in Sweet numb had been very consistent 8/9 no deaths prior Behe was the underdog after falling into fourth in this race
I didn't. He already has the world record (technically, tied with Zoast.) I found this to be a bit of an underdog story - Behemoth, who was dragging behind for much of the race, ended up the only one to even finish. BTW I saw this live too.
+LieutenantVague I was going of this definition of irony; " a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often wryly amusing as a result. plural noun: ironies"
This was one of the best races/runs I've ever seen on any GDQ event. The crowd was so active, the run itself was so intense! I'm going to rewatch it now because I've lost some details, of course, but what a run!
I wouldn't call it the best gdq run ever, but this definitely shows the great positivity of speedrunning. No one is ever looking for the runners to fail, they all enjoy the success, runners and audience in kind
Hm... I wouldn't call it the best. So many dying, and no real race in the end anymore... I don't know. I prefer the "Super Metroid Race" from 2014 (as everybody here has already pointed out). Now, THAT one was a nail-biter!
When Phantoon didn't claim another victim I was sure all runners could make to the end this year. How wrong I was x) And all who died were killed by different bosses :P
*Spoilers - Watch before you read comments* So sad I missed this live... *Cries* But oh my god... The ultimate in underdog stories... And the standing ovation with the name chanting... I'd have died if that were me. This may or may not be the best moment of GDQ, but either way... I think we can all agree this will be one of the highlights we remember years from now.
I have never seen a Super Metroid run EVER! That was a spectacle to behold. Congrats to. Behemoth87 for winning and well done to Oatsngoats, Sweetnunb and Zoast! I only started watching GDQ a few months ago and I've never watched one live, but I have come to love this community. The audience especially are ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!
This was so intense to watch live!! With everyone dying, behemoth coming so close to dying, and going from last one to finish to being the only one to finish!!
Holy shit. I guess Behemoth's slower/safer strats have paid off in the end. He went from being last to being only survivor. Also I found it amazing that 1/4th of all donations in the marathon went towards save/kill.
SPOILERS IN COMMENTS agdq 2014 super metroid race - 1 player died sgdq 2015 super metroid race - 2 players died sgdq 2016 super metroid race - 3 players died oh man, can't wait for the next race!
Cubing Cymru Someone should route through that thing. Right now I can only imagine it being really long with lots of text skipping, but maybe there are some tweaks during the class trial minigames etc.
That was unbelievable! I've seen all three races and this one was my favorite! I'm a Zoast fan,he stayed in for so long! Not to mention, this was the first time a rookie won and the third different winner. Cannot wait for next year!
I couldn't watch this run live as it meant staying awake quite late, and i've been looking forward to watching this race. I was SHOCKED that Zoast fell on Draygon, then Oats on Mother brain. WOW, only Behemoth finished, and he got the Metroid Skip. WOW Seriously nail biting run. I loved every second!!!
This reminds me of like that Olympic Speedskating incident where Australia or something won because everyone else messed up even though they were dead last. Slow and steady wins the race.
I seriously did NOT expect Behemoth to win this considering he was so far behind. It just goes to show that anything can happen, and sometimes going slow and steady really does pay off.
My heart sank when Oats died.... I don't watch a lot of runs of this game, but he looked to be on WR pace after barely (If ever) missing any of the tricks. So sad to see it end that way! Great run from all the racers!
I thought so too at first. However, if you check the video of his world record run, you'll see that he was approximately a minute behind world record pace during this SGDQ2016 run. This means that he didn't miss out on a new world record by dying ^_^ HYPE~!
Did they say WR was 47 mins? I didn't catch that. I only heard them talk about the 42:10 WR. Either way, when Oats started the Mother Brain fight in his WR he was at the 37-minute point, while he was at the 38-minute point in this run. I'm not really sure what point I'm trying to make with this comment, but I'll post it anyway :3
I always enjoy these Super Metroid races. This years run is again amazing. I wish I got to see it live on twitch. My favorite parts and spoiler follows. 46:45 Behemoths' escape from Ridley... I quote Dragon Ball Z for this one! _If Behemoth dies in his escape it will be the end for all of them!_ 47:00 Followed by the reaction to what happens vs Mother Brain and the conclusion. Nothing else needs to be said except... I'm hungry for a stop by in the Mother Brain drive thru! Hold the Ketchup though don't want to make a mess of things.
I lost my shit when he died, and I can't imagine the what pressure on Behemoth must have been after that. No one could have predicted a finale like that.
World record pace is 42:10. He would have been 20-30 seconds behind. Still an incredible run though, he had no major fuckups until the very end of the run
Damn, feel bad I literally just found out about SGDQ (as a brand at all) about a week ago. Would have loved to watch the streams live! The videos are still amazing though, but will definitely not miss it next year!
Looks like we need a gentlemen's "Get Ridley's E-Tank" agreement as a marathon safety strat to stave off near-debacles like this one. Or just a 4-way 100% race, which I don't think has ever been done at a GDQ.
I don't believe... The new guy could manage to win a race against the old schools? WOW, I never see that result in a Speed Run... I never see what did happend there, really, it was the first time I saw that result... It's awesome =)
I wonder how long did they spent mastering everything? for anyone who haven't played this, every 10 seconds in this game, the four of them do incredible mechanical & precise mechanical movements...
RTA = Real Time Attack. Rather than using the game timer, they use an external timer. You could technically use anything with a stopwatch if you wanted.
Getting Gravity immediately and skipping plasma and space jump is faster. And doing Kraid and Draygon on the way back up is just better. Doesn't save as much time because the Ridley and MB fights require so many hits
So, in every other game at any GDQ. The runner is usually expected to take safety saves or safety strats, or both. I'm fairly certain that after this, safety strats are gonna be mandatory. When it comes to SRL races and record attempts it's fine for them to do whatever. But this is a major marathon run for charity. The fact that they intentionally skipped some Energy tanks in order save time is terrible. I don't care that this method saves a couple seconds or even a couple minutes. The point of this marathon isn't trying to get world record. It is to provide an entertaining experience that is actually capable of being finished. I was talking to some of the staff after this run finished and they were ready to have a heart attack over the fact that if behemoth died then they were either going to have to do the entire race again or give back the 250k they raised for the save vs kill race. Hopefully staff and runners alike learned from this experience.
