9:13 that stage isn’t luck based. The purple streaks on the floor indicate the path the combs take. Basically, take care not to cross them at the wrong time. EDIT: never mind. Someone pointed it out.

No, it would have gotten Monkey Ball. Originally, it was just going to be a port with a couple extra features. There is proof in debug, where there are a LOT of Monkey Ball objects and stages.

For the record the two levels in monkeyball 2 that I saw you mention are not levels that rely on luck. The comb level you mentioned is about timing if your not going for a speed run like you showed. With the ramp launcher that you also mentioned you have to line yourself perfectly up with the arrow, otherwise you will be launched off at an angle.

Yeah, the only nitpick I have with this video is that when he talked about Super Monkey Ball 2, RetroBreak was kinda looking for somethings to complain about (though he did go easy on it by explaining why it’s charming albeit briefly) to make Super Monkey Ball 2 sound less great than the Super Monkey Ball games for the Wii (I guess with Banana Blitz, I can see where he’s coming from, like, the Detritious Desert boss giving out Sonic Adventure vibes, but with Step and Roll, on the other hand, I just feel like he’s just trying to make sound better than it actually is by trying too hard to defend it while playing it like an average player).

Nice video, man! My favourite is the original GameCube version. My wife and I used to play it every night after work - mainly the mini games. Monkey Target was just the best and those water effects still look as amazing now as they did back then! Lovely stuff! Looking forward to part 2 of this! 👍🏻

I'm so glad you went into these games with such an open mind, Nick Robinson's cynicism towards any game that isn't 1 or 2 has really had a negative effect on the community I feel. I actually liked the Wii entries and BBHD and think they're all pretty underrated and it sucks to see them have such a negative reputation just for not being the originals.

I also think you're one of the only people I know who appreciates the original version of Banana Blitz and, honestly, it's not my thing (though I do like HD), but I have a lot of respect for that position. I didn’t want to miss anything so made sure I could play both the arcade games :) I do really enjoy Banana Blitz but maybe it’s because I was so excited when the Wii came out, I would have enjoyed anything 🤣 have you seen part 2 yet? There’s some games in that one I couldn’t find unfortunately :(

@@RetroBreak Good on you for completeness! A lot of RU-vidrs don't feel the need to be quite that comprehensive and I really appreciate you going the extra mile. And that honestly makes sense, I think the biggest hang-up with Banana Blitz for most people (aside from, as you mentioned, expecting a puzzle game and getting a platformer) was the motion control, so if you were able to get more used to that, it makes sense that you'd enjoy the game more. I do think a lot of the levels are well designed and, although I have a slight preference for the original art style, I really like the vibrant look they went for. Yeah, I just checked out part 2! I went into Jr. myself a few months back and I thought it'd have seemed impressive at the time so it was really cool hearing you talk about how it blew you away at launch especially. Also has to be the first I've heard of "Super Monkey Disco Ball". Hope that turns up someday if it is indeed a real game.

Honestly, thank you so much, I have waited 13 years for a video like this, STORY TIME!!! On my 9th birthday in 2007, my parents surprised me with a DS Lite. They said it came with a free game and it happened to be Touch & Roll Ever since then I’ve been playing the series almost daily On Christmas that year they surprised me again with a gamecube and SMB1&2, and of course, I devoted the rest of my childhood to those games. Many, many tears were shed over SMB1’s Expert 7. So glad to see someone into the series as much as I am, growing up I had a friend, she was also into the game, but only had DS & Wii versions. She didn’t like the other games, and I was obsessed. I never wanted to do anything else when we were together. To this day I can’t explain what for me hooked on the series, and honestly, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to explain it. As a kid I never cared much for monkeys and similar games didn’t have the same appeal.

I played my friend's copy of the GameCube game quite a bit as a kid, and really enjoyed it so I'm gkad Sega does as much as they do with the series over the years. Heard a lot of naysaying for Banana Blitz HD but looking into it more through videos, I think I'd still enjoy it fine, especially for the price that it's at. It's good to hear praises for it from a lifelong fan like yourself, I'll be getting it when I'm able

Fingers crossed! I did read that they were considering a remake of 1&2 but chose Banana Blitz because of budget constraints, so maybe if BB sells well enough we might see a more traditional game next!

okay serious question I just finished watching the trailer for SMB Mania and I dont have a nintendo switch.. I want to know which system do you think you should play SMB on that optimizes pretty much everything? Online, framerates, graphics. I have the blitz hd version for the pro and I really enjoyed playing that. It sucks that ultra heaven music wasnt added and that in world 6 lvl 6 I believe was absolutely terrible OMG man if you seen the original lvl on the will its laughable in comparison to the remastered version.

I only really loved the first one. After that I tried the second one but I had the same complaints, the levels where too gimmicky. I also tried the Wii game later on but didn’t feel for the gyro controls.

24:20 I know that place from the top of my head, that's Stourport, and I played a lot of Ticket Blitz whenever I went there (that exact Machine btw) I remember hitting jackpot so many times on that machine, so much that the machine kept running out of tickets every 30 mins or so XD

Greeting from Indonesia🇮🇩, Southeast Asian SEGA Super Monkey Ball is One of My Favorite SEGA Games. First Time Playing this Game on Arcade Version, when I was Elementary School in 2000s. Very Nostalgic. Now I'm Playing with Nintendo GameCube by Dolphin Emulator (because I dont Have GameCube Console😅) 1:06 About the Arcade Platform Version when I Was First Time Playing, it's not like this. The First thing I Play is Move the Monkey, yes, use the Ball in the Middle (if this is Right, Move it Using a Stick like an Airplane Controller)

I know this video is a year old now, and there's likely a lot of people who have given their two cents, but the levels in SMB1 and 2 actually don't have any luck to them. Every level will play out the exact same in each playthrough. So having troubles on Reversible Gear is easily solved if you memorize the first place that the gear stops. In a much different perspective, as a speedrunner, this lack of luck is used to their advantage because it allows players to do frame perfect movements and it'll play out the exact same every time. Your viewpoint as a casual player is entirely valid and subjective, of course. Just wanted to throw in my two cents about it :D

You should also be glad (or at least okay) if someone doesn’t like Step and Roll (like me. I appreciate Step and Roll for having a great party mode, but that’s just me giving it credit where credit is due because the reason why it’s a SMB game I don’t hold to as much of a high standard as Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2 for the GameCube or Banana Splitz is because I think it’s controls are uncomfortable even IF I did get used to them, and it is not only a game where at the end of each world, there are credits where the level soundtracks actually have vocal versions, but it’s also the only game with that feature. Just as long as they don’t treat it like Superman 64 or anything like that, eh? P. S. Super Paper Mario is one of the most underrated gems on the Wii, and I’ll always keep defending it over that other PM game (Sticker Star)!

@@kieranstark7213 Step and Roll doesn't require the balance board. You can use a wii remote, and it plays much better that way. Also Super Paper Mario is really good, but it isn't as memorable as Color Splash and Origami King in my opinion.

Or the original Paper Mario or (nearly) The Thousand Year Door (I say nearly since the 2000s Paper Mario games share about the same high level of quality, albeit slightly different where The Thousand Year Door, while a great game, is the least underrated while the original is the best of the best)!

I remember when I was a little kid playing Monkey Ball 2 on Xbox, and I didn't like Monkey Target because I didn't know that I was supposed to press a button and open the ball to glide, so I always just plummeted straight into the water.

I’m glad I’m not alone in liking SMB1 over 2. Though I do have a bit of an issue with you saying “Giant Comb” is luck based, it isn’t. Just go slowly and you will never fail that level (read other comments after I posted that so apologies if you’ve read that about 50 times lol). However, Randomizer? That’s luck (pause buffering aside). Domes? Good lord that is an awful stage. So I absolutely agree that SMB2 has weaker stages. All around great video though! Hope you’re as excited as I am for the remaster of the first 2 games coming out in October. I just HOPE they fix the controller issue, as I hated how imprecise deluxe was on Xbox and PS2, the analogue felt so off.

@@RetroBreak Yeah my problem with SMB2 is how gimmicky they levels feel sometimes. Domes is the worst level in monkey ball history imo lol. I despise it. Though Master 5 (world 10-5) in Banana Blitz is absurd as well (the one where you must jump on platforms that have curves on them and it seems almost random, it’s not I suppose but argh I hate it lol). Almost drove myself insane trying to get the trophy on PS4 due to that level lol.

@@Vereidomething that sets 1 and 2 apart level design wise is the kind of skills they test. 1 has a heavier emphasis on precision and navigating thin paths, whereas 2 has a heavier emphasis on momentum and speed. 1’s levels are built more around the precision of the GameCube controller while 2’s levels are built more around the physics engine itself. It’s why both deluxe and banana mania fell short in different ways. Deluxe had lacking controls but the same engine, whereas banana mania had solid controls but an inferior physics engine. But getting back on topic, 1’s levels are easily more consistent in quality but due to how static they are they lose a bit of their luster once you master them (on a casual level I must specify). 2 on the other hand is less even: its best stages is probably more fun than anything in 1 but its worst stages are also far worse than anything in 1. Ultimately though, because 2 is more physics based the stages are more fun to replay upon mastering them as levels testing your ability to control your momentum are more dynamic than levels where you simply have to make it across a tightrope by executing a similar set of inputs each time. While the same could be said about 2 in some cases, the levels feel less ‘binary’ for the reasons I mentioned

Yeah, it confuses me when fans of a series only say they like one game, if that’s the case you’re not a fan of the series.. like people who only like Final Fantasy 7 or something.

Might get deluxe for xbox, i have a ps2 and gamecube as well should i get 1 and 2 for gamecube or get the xbox version which has both and then some?

I’d still recommend getting 1 & 2 on the GameCube over Deluxe on the Xbox. I prefer the structure of 1 on the GameCube rather than mixing the levels together, the controller on the GameCube is a lot better for playing the game, and the new levels for deluxe aren’t very good.

@@RetroBreak will do, I ordered the carby hdmi adapter and it looks like monkey 2 runs in 480p so its going to look great! 1 isn't in 480p :(

SMB1 on Gamecube is one of the true greats. I put it alongside Tetris and Asteroids as one of the few truly perfect games for me. Monkey Ball Adventure was bloody awful - the series hasn't recovered although I enjoyed the WIi games despite the motion controls - they got a lot of criticism but I thought they were fine. That 500 ticket goal looks like a swizz - I suspect it will only pay out when the machine has taken in so much money.

I have never heard someone talled positively of anything beyond 2, MAYBE Deluxe. .....Everyone still hates Adventure though. I did as a kid, (managed to break the game world once actually), but I'm eager to try a SMB 3D Platformer as an adult!

All I want is SMB 1 & 2 collection on PC. Is it too much to ask SEGA? Great video covering the series though. It's one that has just fallen so far off the track (wink) since those first two games, it's a shame they can't seem to reel it back to what made the series great.

Quite the interesting take not liking Super Monkey Ball 2 as much as the rest of the series, I think it's the best in the franchise besides Deluxe, but that's just my opinion. Banana Blitz I can admittingly see as a guilty pleasure in my eyes, I have fun with it, but I don't think it's a great entry, and I hope they go back to the roots of Monkey Ball like in Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2. Step & Roll I only feel like turning on when I want to play with the Balance Board, because I honestly think it's much worse than Banana Blitz without the Balance Board since the totems just get in the way more than anything and the levels were designed for the Balance Board. 1 & 2 are still my favorites though, I do like some of the other entries whether they're good or not, but I do hope that they try to go back what made the series so special since the arcade game. Nice Retrospective!

Honestly I love the first 2 monkey ball games then I played banana blitz and didn't really like it and I haven't played a monkey ball game since banana blitz, I didn't like banana blitz mostly for the motion controls I could not get behind them and the level design was not that interesting in my opinion but I'm probably going to pick up banana blitz hd because I love the series and I wanna support it, and the announcer from monkey ball 1 and 2 has said on his instagram something is in the works but since he is most likely under contract he can not say anything about it, but since he was the one who said something is in the works I'd have to guess it's either a brand new game or a remake of super monkey ball 1 and 2

Giant Comb isn't luck based, you just played it wrong. You're supposed to go only one or two spaces forward each revolution and use the lines on the floor to guide you.

For launchers you’re supposed to use the minimap as a guide to help you land on top of the tower. It’s actually a pretty straightforward stage once you learn to do that.

Great look of all the console Monkey Ball games! I have to agree about Step & Roll, I think it has problems but is actually a pretty fun game. It's a pain to dig out a balance board, but once you do it's a pretty good time!

I’m glad someone else enjoys it! I always just hear complaints about having the guard rails on the stages, but as it was designed for the balance board they didn’t really have a choice else it would be way too hard!

out of all the games i have played. super monkey ball adventure and 3d are trash. although I have enjoyed all of the other ones tremendously. I have hope the series will go back to its glory days in the future so I am glad that you don't think the series has gone completely downhill yet.

I know… I’ve actually been replaying SMB2 recently and having a much better time with it. Think I was too hung up on comparing the level designs between the first game and this one.

I like 2 and Banana Blitz because they have infinite lives. This is the type of game where you experiment with a lot of trial and error, and it's not so fun to repeat stages you already cleared.

Yes, Nintenboi, I think the reason why you like SMBA is more because of your nostalgia towards it than anything else, although it does have a few decent parts of it like the Mysterious Traveller, Jungle Island, Monkitropolis and Kong-rila being fairly more playable than Zootopia (not the movie, it’s awesome) and its 2D graphics.
