Thanks DYKG for giving me the opportunity to help with the research and for making this awesome video on my favorite game franchise of all time. LOL, that typo at 1:49 though 😂
One of the bigger reasons they can't get these brought over to the west? Well, a lot of them include Macross characters and mecha. Harmony Gold refuses to let them get brought over unless A) all Macross characters and Mecha get renamed to their Robotech equivalents and B) that Harmony Gold gets top billing in the credits. Oh, and an unreasonably large amount of money. So... yeah. Hopefully once HG's license lapses we'll see a few of these.
I think they hold accountable only the 3 series they merge into that .... since Macross (the very 1st) and Mospeda are 2 diferent series. But outside that they doesn't had any rights on things like Seven , Frontier , or Plus. Plus they can also do like Expell from Paradise for the music since the english release has an original song.
I have some real hate for Harmony Gold for this reason. Macross (and Do You Remember Love) are among the greatest anime of the 80s imo, and they butchered it and chopped it up and won't even let the real version be released in the west. What a sham. what an ass-terrible company. Anyways yeah. The real reason the west will never see these games on store shelves is because many of these series are in licensing hell
@@oceanmew Add to the fact most mecha that isnt Voltron, Robotech, Gundam, Evangelion, Gurren Lagan are virtually unknown in North America. Most "anime fans" in the US only know current shonen or whatever aired on Cartoon Network back in the day
This was also noted to be the reason why SRW Alpha was going to have an international release, but fell through. Imagine everyone in the wider mecha commmunity knowing about SKILL and GONG by 2010.
SRW is the reason why video game crossovers ever happened, it paved the way for crossovers like Smash, Capcom versus series, NamcoXCapcom, ProjectXZone etc. It is the greatest crossover franchise ever made.
@The Fantom Convoy Mecha, that genre that gave the west stuff like Transformers and Golion, two mainstays in western pop culture yet is one of the most shit on anime genres. Kinda funny isn't it.
The funny part about this is that more or less those crossovers mentioned are all canon to the SRW series by literally confirming the events of PxZ as canon in the latest OG game, the implications of that are just insane on their own.
@The Fantom Convoy Stuff like Franxx, Geass and Lagann should have gotten people more invested in it. But instead they use the 'Its not like other mecha' thing.
I always hate hearing people go "I don't like mecha" But you like Code Geass and Gurren Lagann "Yeah, but those are different" like piss off, give the shows a chance jfc
@@RayShadow278 Yeah. They say it's different but actually don't know the genre. Seriously, the genre has been around over 60 years since the original Tetsujin manga, but yet the past 20 year years is when the genre became intelligent and worthwhile. What a load of rubbish, they've been experimenting since it's inception Mazinger Z, in fact decontructed Tetsujin by being more serious and violent. Like someone said that Mecha is appealing to certain people because it requires no physical training. Tell that to Getter Robo. It required the pilots to be physically strong to withstand the affects of the Getter Machines. Newbie 'Oh Darling in Franxx is different and focuses on the relationship aspect' Me 'It's ironic how 02 is called waifu material and is always calling the main Darling, yet Anna and Go in Godanner fought in tandem and were actually married and went through married couple issues. Or how about Vandread were the men and women are forced to work together despite being from different planets and deals with Hibiki and Dita's relationship and their need to work together with their mechs.' Plus even hardcore mecha fans will learn more about the genre. I was surprised to find Giant Robo introduced the Rocket Punch before Mazinger, a common misconception for even those who are sure they know the genre.
Having worked alongside Steel Souls and Aeon Genesis on a few of these titles, it makes my heart glad to see the amount of support from the fan base for these titles! Thanks for the support everyone!
Thank you so much for said work. I found AGTP through some SNES translation, which led me to the SRW3 translation. Didn't know anything about it other than that something called Gundam existed, essentially. This must have been around 15 years ago. Also found Doukutsu Monogatari there. Compiled a nearly complete torrent of all ROMs and ISOs up until Z at one point. This obviously also led into reading up on and watching lots and lots of mecha. To put it simply: That SRW3 translation helped shape one of my biggest hobbies and I'm really grateful for the work out into it.
@@ssjcybersonic9255 I'm a little late, but the translation of A portable it's amazing, even the profiles are translated, it's like an official translation! Great job!
Well, one is built to be in cross overs, the other is more spontaneous. which kind is better? I don't know... I tend to lean toward the more spontaneous kind (Gurren Lagann, Shin Chan and Godzilla in one game?!? that's much more unexpected than a super hero team ups...), but I can see why people would prefer the other kind...
Glad to see SRW getting some recognition in the west. It truly is a hidden gem of a franchise. Everybody should go and try out the new games that are in English.
@@Reapermaskhybrid Oh man. I ve waitted for years for somthing like this. But i checked it. The last english version dont include my favorite franchise. Macross is not in them. What a shame.
Most of them, Puyo Puyo suffers this too, although for different reasons. T's cartridge being mostly made up of copyright owners shows that indeed up until this point, it was a copyright nightmare. Netflix was also a godsend in this regard as Expelled from Paradise wouldn't be featured at all if it weren't for the service giving it exposure to the west, and Bandai Namco choosing to let people vote on the series as well reducing legal headaches.
I can't believe you guys actually made a video on this. Here's hoping this sparks the fan-translation projects once more, resulting in even more games available to those who weren't able to experience them.
My two favorite Super Robot Taisen games deserve an honorable mention; Super Robot Pinball for Game Boy Color and Super Hero Retsuden for the Dreamcast. Neither follow the traditional format of the rest of the games in the series, but are exceptionally fun in their own right. I highly recommend them.
If you want SRW in the West, tell Namco Bandai themselves. I'm happy this video was made because it shows Namco Bandai that there clearly is an interest and market for it.
I've beaten A Portable, its a rough fuckin time by the end, Zweizergain is a bastard DAIMOS is ridic tho, Kazuya's Ace Bonus of 100% Parry Rate renders him functionally immune to over half the attacks in the game
It's more like "The West don't buy into the rest of the series in SRW." SRW isn't just about Gundam series, but it mostly uses their calendars for timeline purposes, even if some games fuck that to hell.
@The Fantom Convoy true but none have had the same strong following as Gundam had for the past decade. While Gundam has released a new series bi-annually/tri-annually, the other mecha series didn't because of multiple reasons.
It's like a cross of Fire emblem and every Mecha anime out there. It's an amazing long running series, fell in love immediately when i first played Super Robot Taisen Original Generation game on GBA :>
So you're telling me that only 3 out of the 50+ SRW games are actually had a western release because possible licensing? And they say Fire Emblem's 1-6 not localized was insanity.
It was in fact good reason. Banpresto could secure licences from major Japanese companies, but licencing of anime on west is literal shitfast, with common cases when no one exactly know who own what. As result of that it was literally impossible to release it outside Japan. Beside Original Generation what don't have licenced property.
@@TheRezro It didn't help either that at one point we NEARLY got the Dreamcast version of Alpha until Harmony Gold went nuts because of it having the original Macross in it. From what I understand they were the only obstacle to it getting released at the time but they weren't having it. So yeah, another reason to not like Harmony Gold
I've finish Super Robot Wars V. Thanks to your video now I understand why the translation is so good. Now playing Super Robot Wars T I'm still amaze. The game it's rock solid for me. If for some reason Bandai decide to re-release some of the old games or new ones for PC/Steam. It would be a blast.
I never got why a lot of anime fans I've come across are always like "i don't like mecha" despite never watching anything outside maybe the first episode of Gurren Lagann. Like what's there not to like about giant robots beating the shit out of eachother smh
TARDISES I know the OGs exist, but I think it’s safe to say I’d prefer licensed characters, and I kiiiinda want a physical release in America. However, the fact I can play them in English at all is a godsend that I very much appreciate
Thumbs up to you for making this video. As a player of SRW since the gameboy days, I am so glad to see the SRW series gaining popularity across the globe today. Back then I already thought it was cool to have such a game being a Japanese robot/anime fan.
Unfortunately as of July 2020, V and X are still restricted to the asian digital storefronts and T nowhere in sight on Steam. Not that I mind as I buy hard copies anyway.
With the Remaster craze going on, they can put out ASIA version remasters of their classic games that many fans want. Especially the OG games. Here's hoping.
It all started with Marth and Roy in Melee, to playing Fire Emblem Path of Radiance. Then discovering Disgaea, which lead me to look for more turn based strategy RPGs. As a young kid browsing through GBA emulators and I stumbled upon a SRW GBA game and I never looked back...it easily makes one of my top 3 favorite video game franchise all time. This genre went from “why would you waste a consoles processing power on these types of games” to one of the few types of video game genres I’ll play when I barely have time due to adulting lol Thanks for the video and the exposure! Supah Robot, Supah Robot Wars! Lol
I think Super Best Friends Play is one of the few none mech RU-vidrs that played SRW games. When four of them played Z3 only two knew what was going on while the other two only knew Gurren Lagann haha
@@teddyriggs1305 What happened is that the thumbnail of this video was changed some time after it was published. Originally, instead of T, it showed AE (a fan-made game) in the middle
Asian physical releases are super easy to import, too. Also, I love how the Patreon credits gave Duo a voice reminiscent of the Ugly One from the Teen Girl Squad series on Homestarrunner. Also, Gumdam is pronounced 'gundum', not 'gun-dom'.
Bryce McKenzie Robotech and transformers are the problem as they are made of multiple anime and held by very stingy controlling copyright holders in the west-_-
@The Fantom Convoy I know Transformers isn't in SRWs but some of the franchises that Hasbro bought mechs and robots from in the mid 80s to make G1 Transformers do have represenation in SRW games so that like Robotech being a hodge podge of multiple franchises make things a little harder to deal with copyright granted Hasbro would probably be willing to work with Namco on those IPs that were turned into transformers western rights if they'er franchise gets some representation in there the main problem is Harmony Gold seeing anything related to the shows they used to make Robotech espacly Macross a masive threat to their brand -_- which is pretty silly and childish in my eyes
Nice! I'm one of the few who actually fell in love with the OG games back on the GBA. If any English speakers want a taste of what these amazing SRPGs are like, try those out! Also, thanks for reminding that T's finally released. I'll just go to play-asia real quick...
I remember their was a tv show called robot wars were people built their own robot and battled it against someone elses and home robots (built by specialists) and they tried to break (kill) each other with chain saws or flame throwers etc
I wish there would be Super Jump Wars game. As in, the same turn-based strategy game style, but with Jump Characters. When i play a game based on anime, i prefer to kick back and watch my favorite attacks in turn-based mode, rather in real time battles, where i am forced to always be on edge, thus not being able to watch my favorite attack on game's graphical engine. I hope i am not the only one who sees appeal of turn-based games in this way.
i think a fun way to get SRW in the west is to make a game specifically with westerners in mind, so crossing over series that wouldn't have a hard time in the west. A few that come to mind are Transformers, Power Rangers, Gundam (for the history), etc
as of 5 days ago, I guess we can't say anymore that "no main Super Robot Wars game has an American release" since Super Robot Wars 30, oddly, will have a North American release on October 27
Thanks for this video! Didn't even know Super Robot Wars T existed or that it had an English localization. Went ahead and immediately ordered it after seeing this.
Super Robot Wars has been released outside Japan. OG and OG 2 for GBA were released in America. And a lot of the more recent games were released in Asia.
Thankfully with the V/X/T psuedo-saga being in full translation (and being relatively easy games) its the perfect chance for new players to get into the series. If you like mecha anime, you'll like these games. In some cases, the adapted story turns out better than the original work (lookin at you SEED Destiny).
@Irregular/ Hunter420 Yeah. Big O has appeared in: • SRW D • SRW Z • SRW Z2-1 • SRW Z2-2 • SRW Z3-1 • SRW Z3-2 Maybe it also appeared in a smart phone game (I'm not sure), but I usually don't count those anyway Edit: I'm pretty sure Jigoku-Hen is Z3 (not Z2) 👍
you guys forgot something, there was another anime based on super robot wars, not on the series, but on the elemental lords, characters, the anime is called Cybuster, named after the Lord of wind Mech.
Playing SRW T on Switch right now. First game I've played in the series so far. The stores here all have X and V in English, so I might pick those up later. Still not sure if I like it or not. I'm on like chapter 5 or 6, and haven't upgraded a single thing at all because I don't know what's important to upgrade yet and I don't see any way to go back and grind levels or resources... but I also haven't upgraded anything yet because nothing seems to be able to even hit me. I've never seen the main mech, the Tyrando get hit even once. I've had other characters get hit maybe one time in a fight, but they were never in danger of dying. Maybe I need to bump up the difficulty? I went for normal mode, but it seems to be putting battles in hard. There's also Expert and Super-Expert (or something like that). I figure I'm not an expert since I've never played the series. I also know very little about mech anime, though who doesn't like giant fighting robots? Still not sure if this series is worth going through without being an anime fan, but I'll keep going for now.
Bamco has also recently released Kamen Rider Climax Fighters in Asian regions with an English language option because unlike Super Sentai with Power Rangers and the Shout Factory officially subtitled DVDs, the franchise has zero representation over here.
Awesome! You guys did SRW! Just want to mention one bit. Depending on which robot series in the game, you can also change the pilots around. Fans of the Gundam series always wanted to see what happens if Amura Ray gets his hands on the Gundam NT. Or just for laughs, what if we put Boss in Mazinger? You can do that!
Ah yes, the Forbidden Fruit Theory The thing that is unreachable and locked, is more desired than the reachable , and available Luckily I'm learning Japanese
The games having an English translation and getting released in Asian territories is the closest we'll get to having these getting a western localization. Largely due to the licensing and the fact that an English dub will probably be demanded if this was to be tried to get released in the west, for a niche title it'll be way too expensive to risk. I'll glady stick with importing then at least we can still have it in English text.
YESSSS !!!!! Finally someone put out a video to acknowledge this underrated franchise !!!! Been playing the games since SRWF final chapter came out on PSX :)
Finally i been waiting for you to make a Video about Srw. Edit:Also for people who wants to play A Super Robot Wars game i Recommend Srw Z series those were the best.
