In today's video we look at the story of Ultra Street Fighter 2 : The Final Challengers for Nintendo Switch. Why were people so outraged by the latest edition of Street Fighter 2. The 2017 game with Violent Ken in it is bizarre.

"Violent Ken" was named after his brainwashed version in the SF2 movie where he was super aggressive. CAPCOM never named him it was actually an SNK game that he appeared first, as they were inspired by The SF2 animated Movie. He was also insanely popular amongst fans in MUGEN in the mid 2000s

One thing that always looks odd in the HD remix and Ultra is that while the artwork is painstakingly redrawn in high resolution and characters look gorgeous, they still move as in the old game. That might be a plus because gameplay will be more similar to the original SF2, but I think the quality of sprites make the choppy animation stand out (animation of SF2 was stellar when it was released, of course)

Ultra Street Fighter 2 is probably my favourite iteration, due to a number of reasons: 1. The CPU A.I is not insanely hard like the US version of Super Turbo. The difficulty settings are what you get. If you want added tougher challenge, it’s there. 2. You can use the classic colours with Super Combos (I.e Ryu with white gi, red headband with Shinkuu Hadouken) ST you couldn’t do that unless you either use hacks. 3. Akuma is readily selectable as well as Shin Akuma and finally you also have Evil Ryu and Violent Ken. 4. The ‘lite’ control setting makes super combos much easier to pull off for different characters. Guile’s double flash for example and Evil Ryu and Akuma’s raging demon. It’s very tricky to execute

@hirumaryuei
@hirumaryuei Год назад
So much of this is wrong. SF4 was in development before the pitch for HD Remix. It's possible the success of the sloppy HF port on XBL encouraged them to make a new title, but it seems like SF4 was in the planning stages even before then. HD Remix was largely a pitch from Backbone (likely with pressing by Sirlin) based on the large success of HF for XBL and Puzzle Fighter HD Remix. Capcom never took the initiative for the HD Remix project, although they tried to take credit for it after it blew up in popularity.

If Capcom really wanted to justify that price point, Evil Ryu and Violent Ken was not the way to go. They wanted to add Shoto Characters, then Dan and Sakura should have been the "new" fighters. They have their own stages and theme songs, the Shoto animations are tweakable, and they are fan favorites. After all, Capcom was willing to tap into the CPS2 Engine code to tweak Evil Ryu and Violent Ken to fit inside Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo for Ultra Street Fighter 2, why stop there?

I always thought Violent Ken was a cool name. Ken's storyline is that he has captured all U.S. Martial Arts championships where there's a point system so he probably uses a 4th of his power, he's always shown restraint. So when brainwashed by Bison he became uninhibited... violent.

My initial issue with Ultra SF2 (as you mentioned) was that it felt overpriced at the time (for what you were getting) and took advantage of the Switch launch; where owners of the console were desperately looking for any good games and variety. I bought it digitally on it's initial launch, but I wanted at least a SF Collection for the Switch launch (which in typical Capcom fashion; we got a year later on all platforms). It also didn't help that Capcom seemed to heavily imply that if this game didn't sell well; Switch owners would not likely get any more Capcom support as a whole (which really rubbed consumers the wrong way). .... However, in retrospect; this version of SF 2 is the best and most well tweaked out of all the SF 2 games (specifically when playing with the classic graphics and music). It is much more forgiving in doing the moves, there are actually a bit more frames of animations, the timing of movements, jumps, spacing and just about every aspect of the core game itself; is very refined. Even the Netcode is pretty good compared to that found in the collection that came a year later! I did not notice all this at first, but only after I started playing it again later that year; it was a night and day difference. Still wished they added a true and rebalanced widescreen more (like it is when using the new graphics option) but this game really is a gem; despite the circumstances. It really is my favorite version (the classic mode specifically, the new default mode is good, but entirely different in it's balancing than the classic mode).

I'm no competitive SF player, but I think Ultra is probably the best iteration of SF2. The price tag is FAR too steep (Maybe $30 would be acceptable in some cases, but $20-25 would fit better). Its other issue is its locked to the Switch. Which makes it much less available to the public. If it was at least on Steam I'm sure there'd be more exposure.

After sitting on this a little longer, I had to add this… I cannot officially verify this, but based on experiences in actively being in parts of creative media projects, I’ve always had this take on the naming. The narrative of the naming “Violent Ken” rather than “Evil Ken”, Evil Ryu was already well established after being made official with the fact he became a player character in official SF game titles. Evil Ryu even has a fully fleshed background, and with the fact Satsui No Hado has a dark side, makes the “Evil” name more of a fit to add on to Ryu, as he has to accept into its evil intent. Being that names already was in issue in their earlier issues, being the original 4 bosses in swapping for regional differences, it has to be sure it will fit and stand for times to come. Now with the fact Capcom has never integrated an evil version of Ken, the games that same “Violent Ken” is without of a doubt based on the mind control of the movie, and SNK was well versed with that much of the title, and being they have the relationship with capcom, they got to have creative freedom to naming him how they want for that version. Going “Evil” on the naming for Ken didn’t seem to have a good fit, as his transformation was not induced to accepting into the darkness of the Satsui No Hado, but rather forcing his Psycho Energy into him, and gaining access to controlling him how his wanted, in which, he wanted a very strong fighting mind puppet. He knew how strong Ken was, and was hoping him to take down Ryu being that they are the best of sparring partners with history. Making Ken go overdrive with no mind control for himself would make him a pretty “violent” man…. That’s just my take I’ve always had.

One apt comparison I've heard for the original arcade upgrade editions is that it's kinda like those periodic content refreshes seen these days, particularly in service-based multiplayer games. I think that simile makes sense, given you don't go to the arcade to buy the game - you're just putting some change into the machine to play it for a while.

I actually found USF2 to be my favorite version of the game. It added some content and modes I wish was in more games. But I can understand why people don't like the game. It's a rather pricey port, I feel the price was made because of the art gallery. As said gallery is basically pages from one of capcoms most expensive art books that can be bought at the same price.

Not gunna lie tho , I love Ultra Street Fighter II and in my area of Long Island , NY it’s been in pretty high demand recently in the retro game stores and GameStops . I just love that I can play as any of the dark shotos openly and that’s including Akuma as well as the other 2 , especially selecting that classic sprite look not the remix style and play the story as if I was a Dark fighter from Alpha 3. Also it reminds me of alpha 3 with the dramatic battle mode which dramatic and survivals in a street fighter always hooks me in!

Can anyone tell me if the controls on Ultra SF2 are based on arcade or console ROMs? The only reason I ask is because I downloaded the SF 30th anniversary and the controls are based on the arcade and not the console which makes it difficult to be consistent in pulling off certain moves.

I love Ultra Street Fighter 2, but I wish lazy Capcom would give the game an update patch. I want the update patch to fix Violent Ken and Evil Ryu. By the way, you forgot to mention Shin Akuma/Shin Gouki. He is a hidden character in the game. Like Violent Ken and Evil Ryu, Shin Akuma/Shin Gouki is a broken fighter. I also want the update patch to allow Shin Akuma/Shin Gouki to be playable online.

I just picked this up second hand today. Call it the collector in me, but I do enjoy it. It was “more of the same”. It is really an amazing game, maybe revisions in this case was the way to go, not many games can pull off the “revision” card. I feel a game needs to be great and significant to justify this practice, and true it is “lazy” but the safer bet

But see Capcom did something awesome but yet so twisted at the same time with Capcom stadium collection 2 . If you play Street Fighter Alpha / Zero 3 . . . Because the boot screen that shows the title backsplash is already baby blue colored , you can hold your 3 kick buttons and drop in a coin to do dramatic battle and hold 3 punches and drop in a coin for survival mode! I havnt been able to do that on a version of Alpha / Zero 3 on console since PS2’s Street Fighter Alpha Anthology with unlocking Alpha 3 Upper. You can try running the cabnit for alpha 3 in the 30th anniversary collection but I do not think it ever changes from the original yellow background which shows that the cabnit did not run “X” amount of time which I think is about a months worth of operational running while powered on. I do not get how Capcom picks and chooses which versions of Street Fighter goes where with any new or exclusive content at all or even just a badly rushed port ? They are so weird
