I had one flying a EZ 25 size P51 had hundreds of flights. Love running it nice and rich at level flight and as soon as I pull G the engine just kicked into another notch of power all by itself, kinda like control line, fun times!
Hey David! Yeah, that's a sweet one. I'm hoping to get that Chinese ST45 to run something like that, but it has one of those composite carbs on it. The whole thing was all gummed up with old fuel when I got it. I did get the new bearings for it the other day. Perhaps I can delve into it once I return from vacation. But boy, you're right, this little SuperTigre G40 runs sweet.
I had the same engine on a small 40 size trainer, it was always trouble free for many flights. I was also impressed with the power, the airplane was fast for what it was. Everyone was welcomed to fly it and then signed the wing. It is still going today only the 8 year old in our group owns it now. Flys solo. Happy new year, hope it is a great one for you and yours!
Happy New Year and Congrats to this G40. It will increase in rpm after the ring is set (takes several tanks). If you want to run it in with in-flight rpm you can use a 9x6 APC sport prop. This is one really powerful .40 engine and if you are willing to invest a magic muffler will give access to its real potential (I recommend the Jett "Stream" muffler by personal experience).
The very best wishes David!! Many good runs and engine sessions! This one is a real beast! Its not the same as the old real orginal Super Tigres, made in Italy, but still a great performer!
Happy new year David. The ST 40 GS 40 is a great engine, in fact its one ofthe strongest engines in the 40 range as far as I know. You can expect around 13.800 to 14 K after fully broken in. Mine turn in this range Regards
Hi Dave - I’m cleaning up an old Italian made GS-40 engine. Do you happen to know what the small hole on the top of the piston near the outside of the piston is for? I’m thinking it may be for pressure compensation or perhaps to allow a small amount of fuel to get into the crankcase for lubrication, but I’ve not been able to find any online reference that mentions it. - Thanks - Jim
David McIntire : This web page shows the piston top: www.gravesrc.com/supertigre-piston-gs-40-ring.html (Small, machined hole at the 11 o’clock position)
Well it is a ringed piston. It seems logical that is where the pin would be positioned to keep the ring from rotating. So it is used as a reference for the pin location or so the pin can be replaced. That is the best I can come up with.
David McIntire : Thanks, Dave. Your hypothesis is quite reasonable. The engine is running well so my question was motivated by curiosity. - Take care - Jim
I notice you're always running like a 5 % glow fuel and when I buy glow fuel. That always give me 15% can u do a video to explain them and why I might want to use a different % thanks
Here is one video. I compare fuels on several videos but you will just have to search my channel for them. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EM6YVJJ1A-A.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UUNbufOXhTE.html
Have a google at taking DB readings ,think it's a waste of time doing it, prop size, hard concrete standing, grass, all make a big difference I think you are meant to be 7 metres away and take 4 reading front, back, left and right side and the average the 4 readings. Happy new year David ,Take a day off and rest that back . P.s get yourself a 45 ABC 25% more power.
