While Olympus may not have the simplest and easiest to use camera menu system, they did have Super Control Panel which is super useful for accessing important settings quickly. It is a single page layout of most frequently used, camera controls that can be activated with just a click of a button. This allows adjustments without deep diving into the camera menu system. The Super Control Panel is not unique to Olympus but I am sure Olympus was the first to implement this setup, and if you can take full advantage of the Super Control Panel, I guarantee you that it will make your life much easier!

There must be many people breaking the lockdown or some common vector spreading it. Are your flats or houses using a recirculating common air-con system? Something isn't right because if people are not in close contact then the virus should not spread from one person to another. Can you think of why there are so many cases even with the lockdown? How is the vaccination campaign going? Are any other prophylactic medicines or methods being used, like effective valveless masks when shopping, hand sanitisation and social distancing, or even the ivermectin product?

One thing you didn't note is that when you select a cell in the SCP you do not need to press OK to adjust the setting; you can immediately turn the dial to adjust it. This makes it very fast to use as you can simply tap a feature and turn the dial. You then half-press the shutter button to select your choice and exit the SCP, and presto -- you're ready to shoot with the new setting. It took me a while to appreciate what an ingenious feature the "Shortcut" button is for the small cameras without many customizable buttons; it basically becomes a "multi-function button" with the whole SCP to choose from. Whatever you last selected is remembered so you can simply press Shortcut and turn the dial. For example on my E-PL10 which has no ISO button I just leave ISO selected in the SCP and "Shortcut" becomes my ISO button.

Hello Robin I’ve recently acquired an Olympus OMD EM1 Mk ii and 12-40mm lens. Having previously used a DSLR system I am gradually understanding how to use the mirrorless system from.a DSLR one. People give Olympus cameras a bad rep for having too complicated menus. Ironically, the SCP is THE best and MOST intuitive way to control a large amount of exposure related settings in one location - it's a shame it's not turned on by default.

In the original Olympus 4/3 cameras, before micro 4/3 came out, the SCP was the default "menu".

Robin, later this evening, I was listening to an audio-book about the Royal Navy. It made a mention of Malaysians, which immediately made me think of you! Hi Robin this was an excellent tutorial! I recently bought the EM1 mk lll. having never used Olympus before I found the menu very confusing and had no idea that you could simply adjust all the settings on from SCP screen. this is brilliant! I watched loads of tutorials on the menus but no one mentions this feature or explains it so well now finally I can navigate my camera settings with ease very well done keep the content coming. Oh Could you please do a tutorial on Astro photography especially the settings using the stary sky AF feature on the EM1 mk lll not many tutorials out there go in-depth on which are the best settings cheers take care.

I've been using OMD cameras for some time now, but every time you put out one of these "info" videos, I find at LEAST one thing I have not played with...... so keep them coming Robin!! Maybe you could do a video on setting up custom function buttons with examples???? Like on my lenses I set up the lens function button (Lfn) to magnify so I can get my focus point right on the money (Yup, I know only the pro lenses have that button....). Thanks for another informative video Mr Wong!!!

Thanks Robin, now I really need this video!! Good news! I have just bought a used Olympus OM-D EM-1 Mark II. From a Swedish dealer, good price for what I get. I guess it arrives early next week. While at it, I also bought a used Olympus M.Zuiko ED 75-300mm f/4.8-6.7 II for my birds. As you might remember, I have a Lumix GH5, GM1 and GM5. Still in love with my OM-2n that sits on a shelf. My E-M1 has a SCP and LCP (Live Control Panel). They display the same info (AFAIK) but with the LCP you still see the image.

At least on the older models, it's a shame that the super control panel is not turned on by default. I have purchased many used models over the past several years and not one of them had the previous owner turned on the super control panel. It's such a handy feature. Great video as always, Robin.

It strikes me as odd that Olympus, despite decades of providing us with the SCP, has never programed in the ability to customise the thing. Even a cheap phone can do this, but we are stuck with what the engineers consider the most important functions to access in a hurry. How great would it be to design your own panel and perhaps have a different one for each custom slot? Or swipe between several, depending on your current requirements. At least the new OM-1 has a My-menu, which you can customize to your preferences, but why not go all the way and do this for the SCP? I don't see how this would be difficult.

I have used Nikon SLRs for many many years but recently defected to Olympus, in no small part due to Robin's videos. Great decision. I only bought an M10 and a 25mm 1.8 but am thinking of buying a Pro series zoom and another body before too long. The control panel is a really useful feature. Not perfect but very good. Is there a way to average 2 or more spot readings? A few cameras could do it decades ago so these days it would only be a very simple addition to the software.

What model you used for this review? I used Em10iii and I can see preview directly from LCD while add more or minus A,M,G or B. But for E-M5II, E-M5III I cannot see preview directly. I am not I missing something but it 's weird for higher model like E-M5.

Does anyone know if the OMD EM1 Original needs you to switch to video mode to record Video??? In one of the other Robin videos, he says you need to turn the dial to the video setting rather than merely pressing the record button. I notice in the settings that Video Mode is "linked" to the P (program dial), so thats a bit confusing. DOES anyone know whats going on??

Robin! we love yourd videos! We are a couple from Italy! We have 2x EM1-mk2 and 1x EM10 mk2 plus multiple lenses. I have a question for you, the scenario is about using the microHDMI video out of the camera EM1mk2 FW3.2. It's going to a VIDEO MATRIX for social media streaming purposes. The RECORDING MODE is checked in the camera menu as for HDMI output. So the HDMI output is clean for the MIXER operator to use it, and the CAMERA operator can move every parameter to control the camera. BUT when the CAMERA operator presses the MENU button to change any parameter, the ON-CAMERA LCD is BLACKED OUT and the MENU appears in the HDMI OUTPUT. This to me looks like WRONG. Because the preview MIXER monitor is - in our conditions - far away from the camera operator and unplug-replug the HDMI cable from the camera isn't really a solution. Do you know if there is a further option for this? a trick? an update?? thank you!

Hi! these devices read "HDMI output" as a new primary screen (I.e viewing on a TV or capture device) therefore I'd suggest trying 1. Use a standard set of parameters for each cam (I.e. one for closeup shots and one for wide angle shots, etc.) and pre-program them before filming, along with ambient settings, ligthing, sound checks etc to reduce changes during live transmission 2. I assume you might be using a streaming program such as OBS (open broadcaster software) in which you can set multiple scenes and select one or another. If this is the case, and you need to change the camera parameters mid-streaming, instruct the operator to change scenes in the program (seleecting a secondary input device, a prerecorded video/break, or a green screen etc) while he adjusts parameters 3. Most Olympus camera buttons can be reprogrammed to other functions. Even the "on/off" function can be assigned to any other button. Play along with the dials and extra buttons and configure them so that most exposure/film settings that you need can be adjusted by turning dials or buttons, without pressing "menu". Mr. Wong has a couple of videos about "button configs" and tricks to optimize your camera features 4. If all this doesn't help, is there any way of connecting a second MIXER monitor close to the camera operator? there are even some phone apps such as "remote control collection" that help achieve a secondary view of any computer screen projected to a phone paired via wifi hope this helps!

I have M10-IV version. On Super panel, some icons allow me to change variables while other like WB Auto do not do anything when I go on them. What do I have to change to work?

When you turn the wheel it should cycle through the options, sun, cloud etc. Unlike the other options you have to double tap with your finger to open the option fully. Not sure why.

If some particular modes and functions are selected, it will prevent others from working. White balance cannot be changed away from Auto when using iAuto shooting mode for instance. There are a load of other similar limitations made for good reasons.

Olympus is still in business but the camera business is separate from the original company which makes optical instruments etc. The new company has introduced a handful of new products including the very nice 8-25 Robin reviewed recently.

OK, Chris. But it feels not the same. And something like the 8-25 was in roadmap of real Olympus further. The new company has to show, in which direction they move. See Sony VAIO: it's now a "cheap product". So I have most equipment of Oly that I need. Now it is a "surprising egg" with OMD Digital Solutions...

@@wickie4801 It'll be interesting to see what they do over the next year or so but I don't think they will go down market because the lower end of the market has been largely replaced by smartphones. Cameras are now mostly bought by serious enthusiasts and professionals. Olympus have a niche which is distinctly different from Nikon and Canon (as they did with the 35mm OM system) and I think they'll try to build on that.

Surely your description of S-AF and C-AF is not correct. S-AF will select focus once and lock it while your shutter button is half pressed. C-AF will continually adjust focus if either subject or camera moves while you half press the button. Similarly for back button focus is selected.
