We spoke to Monojack from Beepboop at Superbooth 2023 about his new customizable tape machine Tape Rack. The product is 8 days old, surely the newest thing at Superbooth this year, and is the result of Monojack's obsession with experimenting with sound by experiencing it in the moment, rather than judging it. The idea of Tape Rack is to design your own custom tape machine using different parts and arranging them in your own order to capture a moment in time, use it as a delay, or a sound-on-sound recording device. During the interview, Monojack demonstrated the versatility of Tape Rack by adding different modules and effects, creating unique sounds.

One of the best things ive seen from the show so far. This and Korg Berlins electro-acoustic prototype. And a guy I glimpsed rubbing some glass or acrylic rods with a cool looking resonator plate on the front. I love to see these exciting and unusual ideas along with the more "mainstream" gear.

Loving all the stuff. I know he says the idea is to get off the grid, but in Eurorack it would be cool if you could choose to have one track on the tape to record some sort of clock on. Then send that back out to the system. The tape loop could theoretically become the systems master clock. Then playing with the speed of the tape your whole system would follow. Sort of how we used to use a track for timecode back in the day (to sync MIDI gear when multitracking to tape). It would mean adding at least a second track to the tape setup. A second track could also give the option of stereo, or two semi-independent loops running in the same timeframe. Having the unstable tape as a master clock could bring some fun wavering timing to sequences too I bet. Anyways loving how this guy thinks. Hope to see his stuff come available.

I absolutely love the enthusiasm and I know many love working with tape, but I hated it in the 80s and longed for steady state, instant access and high quality sound reproduction so this to me is like a movement to bring back outside toilets and newspapers for bog roll.

You are a mindreader. My mind too. Great idea. Kudos for hobbling that together. Genius. Would be nice if you added a collector box like in classic tapedelays for a couple of meters tape buffer so we get 20-60secs of real tape looping. Please make a 4 channel looper.
