We met with Gur from Tiptop Audio to find out about their latest project called Art. Art produces a signal they’ve been working on for over a decade that fixes the tuning problems of Eurorack systems. With Art, they can link multiple modules together and play polyphonically. This led them to develop discrete polyphonic synthesizers that can be built from separate oscillators and filters, and they also revived the Vortex 6, a fully polyphonic module which is a clone of the PPG wave 2.0 with 8-bit converters from the '80s and has six built-in oscillators. Vortex 6 can use their newly developed cable, the Polytip cable, to patch the audio out from the Vortex 6 into the audio in of the octopus filter.
With the Polytip cable, they can patch up to eight signals that carry all the signals, such as the eight filters, eight envelopes, and six VCAs of the modules. This opens up a whole new world of sonic possibilities and Tiptop are continuously working on this project and plan to release more modules that use Art in the future.

Great to see companies innovating like this. So many beautiful machines.

I’m digging that “carbon fiber” finish on that Mantis case, is that a future product ?

this is an elegant solution for poly in eurorack. I'm glad to see them doing something new and taking risks. I hope it does well. I can see people buying this system just to have that 8 voice PPG inspired oscillator.

it reminds me that we really need midi 2.0. This is interesting though, I was confused and he should explain outright that it's a digital signal, not "like CV or gate" because those are analog signals that are interchangeable. To me the most interesting aspect about modular is there are no boudaries between audio/cv/gate/trigger signals and you can play with that to get unexpected results. This sorta go against that philosophy (not saying it's useless). also interesting that dreadbox releases its own take on polyphony at the same time

This was my first thought too. He explained that there was "no reason" to use the "more expensive" v/oct standard for pitch, but doing away with the ability to use any signal to convey pitch information misses the whole point of modular. I guess if it's used in addition to v/oct like on the oscillator that's a value add, but then you aren't getting the benefit of it being cheaper -- and things also get weird from a design perspective at that point. Like, if you're designing a poly filter you're going through the expense and hassle of building a panel with six analog filters but five of them are only controllable by ART (unless you also include six v/oct ports, which defeats the point). Big fan of Tiptop and glad they're innovating on poly euro, I'm just not quite convinced by this one yet.

Did I miss some new thing from Dreadbox that is similar ?
@valdir7426
@valdir7426 Год назад
@@symbiat0 it's not exactly similar but they released a mono synth voice that can be stacked with other via midi and form a poly synth with the first voice as a master interface. telepathy is the name.

@@valdir7426 Ah yes, I saw that (though I’m not sure I’d buy 8 of those to get 8 voices). I think the ART polyphonic modules are super interesting, they look and sound amazing.

Agree to 100% but polyphonic in modular is nothing new. Döpfer did it long time ago. I use a fully polyphonic system from döpfer and if you own a mordax data ( one of the most important modules ever built ) and use the lil yellow cabels all the tuning Problems are gone…. And if you go a step further and use the acl sinfonion you are gonne get an unbeatable patch. But i am a Tip Top fan. They are doing great modules for very good price. This System sounds very good, but nothing for me to jump on the bandwagon.

If by "change everything" you mean "give us the same sounds and control options we've had forever but with a different bus", then yeah, I guess it does.

Another set of standards that others may or may not follow. It's actually a great idea, but I hope others choose to follow this rather than coming up with competing, incompatible standards. I like the simplicity of control through continuous voltage signals. The digital part is what I wonder about.

You make a good point. It is very intriguing, but the cynic in me also wonders how proprietary and or expensive the polytip cables will be. I assume there will be lively debate between futurists and purists in the modular community, but I don’t know where I fall yet. I want to understand it more, and play with it a bit. I certainly like the fact that TipTop are pushing the envelope of what’s possible.
@jarls5890

It is a good idea - but it will depend on other manufacturers supporting this standard.

@@FileTransferProtocol They look like usb-c cables without any chip in them. So just a multicore cable with usb-c tip, It may be possible to use just cheap usb-c cables if thats the case

@@FileTransferProtocol I should say that nothing will stop me from buying one of these modules if I want one. And I have a fair number of Tip Top modules for a reason. I love that they are innovative and try to keep prices down. I just wonder how it will play out and if others will adopt this or try to put out another version. Even TRS MIDI quickly came in 2 standards. And also 1U.

I'm skeptical. A brand new tuning system and a brand new type of connection that uses proprietary cables? Even if the ART signal is as miraculous as they say it is and it will get adopted by third parties, it will create a giant rift in the Eurorack community because suddenly half the modules will be incompatible with the 25 years worth of existing modules, unless every module that will support ART will also support 1V/OCT but that defeats the point. The Polytip jacks and cables are interesting, but I want to see other companies integrating them into their polyphonic modules, and I want to see other companies making their own Polytip cables. Otherwise it will be a polyphony monopoly (which is a fun thing to say and a potential band name). We'll see.
@darkwraithcovenantindustries
This assumes someone won't come up with an adapter.

Interesting concept for a "closed system" (consisting of one manufacturers modules only) with a proprietary standard. I'm sure that will level up eurorack at some crucial points. Even if some manufacturers are going to pick that system up, I'll stay with the more unitarian mode, because I like the philosophy of not bothering with different cable-types. I'm currently interfacing MIDI-to-CV and vice versa, and would not like to expand to more standards in the rack. No offense still, I'm sure it's a great evolution to other users and if modules support "boring standard CV" as well, it's not a problem to maybe just not use it. :)
@xpump876

It appears to primally be a proprietary TipTop system ? There was some initial mention of using multiple oscillators (any make) to create polyphony, but nothing was shown to support this that I could see. That would be a good tool to have but it's not really being demonstrated here that I can grok.
