Jamie from Rhodes played some licks on an amazing transparent edition of the new MK-8 Rhodes piano, and took us through some of the history and development of this lovely instrument.
Precision built in the UK with the finest hand-selected materials, the MK-8s keyboard is manufactured by internationally renowned Kluge Klaviaturen GmbH (Steinway Group), and each MK-8 is painstakingly put together and tweaked to perfection by hand. They can be ordered with a whole universe of different finishes and styles, which will add to the end price, or you can opt for the base model with a black tolex shell and black top.

Absolutely love the MK8, also love my MK1 that I fully restored (video on my channel) but damn, what a time to be a musician, we've got Modern Prophet's, Oberheim's, Moog's, and Rhodes. The whole build, preamp and effects together make a really special instrument. Especially that Sustain Pedal!! That's one thing I don't love about the MK1. But if you can't afford a MK8, don't hesitate from buying a MK1/MK2 out of someones garage and restoring it yourself. It's daunting, but not as difficult as you'd think; the Avion Studios Preamp is a beauty, pair it with some pedals and youv've got a forever instrument.

This is an analogue distortion tuned especially for the Rhodes. The way it interacts with the other controls is unique.

@@goldphinga It's one thing if someone already owns an MP11 or a home digital piano with great action, but all these things take space and are heavy and expensive. So it really seems the right feature for a modern Rhodes to have, thats my take.

One of my favorite effects on a Rhodes, is running it through a Leslie…I hope one of the effects will include a Leslie-simulator.

With the panning engaged and assigned to the expression pedal + the chorus on the Fx model you can get surprisingly close to a rotary speaker effect, using the pedal to speed the rate up and down.

@@Rialas It really would be cool if some Farfisa Mega Devotee with money would do this. Just replicating the look of those old designs would be extraordinary. Certain upgrades to the electronics could be accomplished I’m sure but still aiming for that sound. When I went through a major transistor organ phase I ended up with four Farfisa’s and a Vox Super Continental. The Farfisa’s include a Duo, Two like new Deluxe Combo Compacts, and a standard Combo Compact. I spent a small fortune to get them fixed in Seattle and at the time I was from Portland. Unfortunately problems occurred with a few right away and having to haul them to Seattle is just not in the cards. No one in Portland works on them and the whole thing becomes impossible after awhile if you can’t do your own work. So yeah, new ones with new electronics that are easily repaired would be the coolest. They are the coolest keyboards along with the Vox Continentals and Supers.

This all-black key version is a ltd edition to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Rhodes. We are only building 10 and and giving away one as part of our 75th Anniversary celebrations.

Even if I could afford one of these, I'd still go with a Vintage Vibe, those guys have an exponentially greater amount of experience actually building and selling pianos. These new "Rhodes" guys are just researchers compared to them. And you can save $2500....

What? Rhodes has been in business much longer and retain all the intellectual property, blueprints, and designs since the mid 1960’s. Our research, development, expertise, engineering, and understanding of the instrument goes back to the invention of the tine piano from Harold Rhodes whom we also worked with. We’ve also worked extensively with the original engineers and factory workers from the original factory in Fullerton, CA. Rhodes started in the 60s. Then relaunched in 2005, and again now in the UK. I have personally been with the company for 14 years. Please check your facts.

I received my mk8 two weeks ago and can say the sound and build-quality exceeded my expectations, but it catastrophically failed the first day. working with rhodes closely, but severely disappointed so far

I prefer matt keys for feel, they would look great in a matt or semi-gloss. Full gloss is a bit....... optimistic, for a touch surface.

what a load of sales hogwash. vintage rhodes are still reasonably priced so they have to come up with a lot of reasons why this is around 4x the price of an old one. vintage ones are not falling apart either, i have a 1972 mk1 which is funky as hell and still going strong.

of course its expensive to build a new rhodes and i dont doubt you are doing a great job. you are still talking sales hogwash in the video and that only discredits your efforts - like here you go again: in dont know where you live but in berlin you can easily find a good rhodes for 2k+ at the moment. i recommend you stick to the truth as its hard enough to find musicians that can afford almost 10k for an instruments anyways. just my twopence again.

That's very nice but the price is just prohibitive. It's pretty sad that most modern reissues of iconic keyboards from the past such as Oberheim, Rhodes, etc. are too expensive for real musicians and are probably targeted at rich geeks and snobs who are gonna use these wonderful instruments as collectible items. In the meanwhile, I'll keep using my Yamaha CP88 :) P.S. Glad there's Behringer. Wondering if they can also start producing electromechanical pianos for the masses ;)

Real instruments cost real money. Look at a symphony orchestra, the average price each musician paid for their instruments is about $50,000.00. Concert grand pianos, $100,000.00 to $150,000.00. A full time musician can easily afford $7000.00 for their instrument when accurate sound and playability is important to you.

Dude, old Rhodes sell for under $2500 here. Someone's trying to sell a Baldwin Electric Harpsichord for $1700, but it needs restoration. It's not even close to $8000 to get an authentic Rhodes. That price is for a brand new top of the line celebrity endorsed smooth as butter Rhodes. It's a luxury Rhodes, not a made to a price point Rhodes. If you're coming about the price if food, people will be sympathetic. If they find out you're talking about caviar prices, there might not be as much sympathy. No I'm not getting one. If someone asks me to tour and pays me enough and hires someone to carry it, then hell yeah I will. I'd always like something better of course, but for the most part I'm not held back by my gear, other than technological constraints (it can't translate my thoughts to music directly, but I don't consider that to be my gear holding me back😂)

@@GizzyDillespee old Rhodes pianos used to sell for $100 in garage sales. Because nobody used them and they fell out of fashion when the DX7 came out. It’s nostalgia that brought prices of old vintage keys to the sky and that applies to reissues too. Let’s not compare a concert grand to a Rhodes please :) Nobody can make a solo Rhodes concert before the crowd goes out. Even Bill Evans mixed solo Rhodes with a piano but abandoned Rhodes completely. As much as I love the Rhodes sound and pianos, it’s a specialized sound that is just a part of the arsenal of keyboard players. No keyboard player will use a Rhodes piano only even in a funk/fusion/jazz band. What I’m saying is, this Rhodes is great but I’m sure you won’t see many keyboard players using it on stage unless paid to do so. And studios have long ago switched to software even big ones. I’ll say it again, this is an instrument that will be bought by snobs and geeks mostly. That’s not a bad thing though. Maybe it was the business plan in the first place.
