Supercar Showdown: Lambo Balboni vs. TT Ford GT vs. Supercharged R8

We've featured two supercharged R8's on the show in addition to this one, neither has crashed. The only other crash on the show was the Evo last week.

the exterior mounts, we use Contour HD's and the suction cups they come with. on the inside we use a 6" mount with a canon HFS11, and our primary external is a Panasonic HVX200

No, the 458 doesn't have a manual option, if that's what you mean. And double clutch gearboxes do eliminate MOST of the weight transfer that happens when you shift in a corner. However, some companies think that having paddles mounted on the column discourages the bad driving habit of shifting in corners, and that they are always in the same place when you need them. if you want to shift with the wheel cranked over, in some cars, you might accidentally hit the wrong paddle.

Interesting that you mention that. I ran about 10 hot laps around willow springs, and the temperature went from the normal 220 up to about 260. I parked it and let it idle, and a minute or two later it was back to normal. I thought it was normal, because the temperature went up a bit in the canyons too, but if owners are reporting that, I would definitely believe it.

you aren't really supposed to be shifting while turning. Racing schools, driving instructors, and anyone who knows how to drive a car properly will tell you to choose the gear for your corner exit while your braking into the corner. I mentioned that it's possible with the paddles to not upset the chassis if you shift while cornering, but Ferrari, Lambo, Nissan, Aston Martin, Mistubishi, and probably some others that I'm forgetting, all put their paddles on the column, probably for that reason.

it's not about power loss as much as it is about sudden weight transfers that can come from shifting gears mid-corner, which can easily cause a spinout if you time it badly.

Some people do that, others do a "twincharged" setup that peaks at about 1200hp, but is better around town. The TT setups peak at 1500 or so, but with less low end torque.

Yes, the hard top is about 0.4 seconds faster to 60 because it's got a bit less weight on it.

Have you ever even tracked a car before? I'm not talking about sprockets moving around inside the transmission, who cares about that? i'm talking about the weight of the car shifting back and forth between the steering and drive wheels, which happens if you shift gears or lift off the pedals during cornering.

I don't read road and track anymore, and the brakes didn't catch fire when I drove it, so I only go on what I experience.

that's insulting. Everyone's so quick to judge. Isn't it possible that I genuinely liked the car? I'll admit, after a few more days of driving, I did find a few faults: rear visibility is scary bad with the top up, and Tom, who is a bit shorter than me, had a really hard time seeing where the front corners of the car are while parking. The keyless go also only unlocks the drivers side when using the door buttons, which is annoying. Besides that, an absolutely stellar car.

the ZR1 may put down a faster lap time, but everywhere else, the GT has it by a mile.

I don't know anyone with an ABT R8. Since you've driven one, tell that person to email me and we'll test the car.

that's exactly the point. lap times are boring and way too obvious, and also mean I'd have to push a borrowed car way too hard in the corners to win. Straightaway speed is a much safer contest to have when using borrowed cars.

Depends on where you live. If you live somewhere where you can drive with the top down at least 60% of the time, then go for the roadster. But with the top up, the rear visibility is awful, so if you plan on driving with the top up, go for the coupe.

as I said in the video, the GT has more horsepower in a straight line, but because the Balboni is a factory car with arguably better handling, I was able to carry more speed onto the straight itself, resulting in a close top speed run.

I wouldn't look for dealerships to test drive cars. Look at tuner shops and their respective customers, your friends, parents, family members, anyone you know who will let you borrow their car for a few hours.

The scud could be considered that, but considering the 458 is even better, there will have to be a new one now :) No, this GT is a straight TT setup. I've seen the twincharged setup too, it's better for around town, whereas the straight TT is better for the track and standing mile.

i was taking a side in an argument that was set up. it was a staged debate between the cars, and we each randomly drew a side.

Not so, not so. Larger manufacturers, even Lamborghini, Ferrari,etc, have "press fleet cars" which are designed for media and potential customers to drive. These cars are very difficult to schedule from the manufacturer, but they make the rounds from dealer to dealer, and if you happen to be in the same place at the same time as one of the cars, the dealership's owner can give you permission to drive it. Press cars don't exist for Caterhams, so we'd have to find an owner. I don't know any.

you guys are not only making judgements without driving either car, you're misinterpreting what I said. I said "better than the last Z4 I drove," which was an '07 M Roadster. I have not driven the brand new Z4. I hear it's good, but even with the smaller engines is more expensive than a fully loaded Z. And if the Z is more expensive in Europe than the BMW, well that's hardly our problem.

You don't have to get on a company's good side to keep getting press cars most of the time. As long as you don't totally trash the car for no good reason, it doesn't really matter what you say. Some companies, say, GM and Chrysler, are more worried about negative press than anything else right now, so if you say bad stuff, they take your privileges away. So far, everyone else has been cool.

as I've said before, get a video camera, find a car, and go to it. there is literally nothing stopping you.

True but then again there are alot of sports & supercars of such caliber as well. I mean look at it this way Valentino Balboni worked for Lambo for 40 years heavily contributing into the production of a lot of their car only to get recognized at his retirement. So a name is just that , a name.. the making to me is the key essence of what defines that specific car.

The Italians pronounce it "gayardo," but most Americans will accept "Guy-ardo" as close enough.

no, I wasn't kissing Nissan's ass if that's what you mean. At the time we shot that, I couldn't find anything about the car I didn't like. Later, I learned that, after about 10 laps on a track it gets really hot and needs to be cooled down, and that the rear visibility with the top up is embarassingly awful. Neither of which would be a dealbreaker for me, and I still love the car.

I love the Balboni Edition...and Balboni..got to interact with both the man and the car. i wish this guy would have done the test with the 6 speed manual not the E-gear

The LP550-2 VB and that Ford GT are the two of the sexiest cars I've ever seen. They look good next to each other. And that really sucks for the R8 driver.

Even if I said I didn't like it, as long as I had good reason, that would be fine and they would continue lending me cars. Isn't it possible, that I actually like the car? It does happen from time to time. I didn't have any problems with how it drove or functioned as a car, and I found myself smiling most of the time behind the wheel. That makes it a commercial? Come on....

A worked twin turbo V8 Ford GT. Stick two turbos on the Lambo and see how it goes! You can search "Underground Racing" and they've got a twin turbo Gallardo for you to have a look at!

I haven't found a video where a GT lost yet. except for a revving competition, in which the GT sounded a lot cooler anyway.

I told him if I ever did it I would call it a guerrilla car review. Wonder if I can get the dealer to hold the camera for me? Meh I doubt they would let me off the lot. I can hear the salesman now "Whaduhyuh mean you just wanna review it? You aint gonna drive it unless there's a chance you'll buy it." LOL

Stock, the GT has about 550hp. Stock, the Gallardo LP550-2 has, you guessed it.. 550hp. Stock, the cars would lap a track around the same time. When you start bolting snails and stuff onto them, you change the game. This GT in the video would be dusted by the UR Aventador TT with like 1200+ hp. But, at the end of the day, it always comes down to who has the most cash because if you just thump as much cash at it as you can, eventually you'll win.

at higher speeds, weight becomes much less relevant, and only horsepower and aerodynamics really matter. so although I'm fat, even if you're half my weight the car wouldn't go much faster.

a "schumacher edition" ferrari is what the enzo basically was and an "aryton senna edition" honda is what the acura nsx basically was and those were both fanominal cars, as is the balboni...car manufacturers should take more inspiration from their drivers more often because they do wonders

actually the 370Z goes 0-60 in 4.6 seconds according to M/T and C/D. the auto Z was the one that hit that tim and the MT does it between 4.7 and 5.1 depending on the driver.

These guys on here fighting over which car is best and that top speed tests on the track are useless, are confusing this show with other car shows. This channel is meant for watching a guy having fun with great cars. Don't over-analyze the show or the cars, you enjoy both far more.

If you want to go that route then un-de-tune? the Ford GT back to it's 1100 rwhp and see how it goes again. A lot of people don't like to acknowledge the GT because it is American, but like the specialty Vipers and Vettes, it walks all over the European supercars.

also, though Fairlady Z series have cultivated a good racer image in Asia thank to the car culture in Japan. in the west however, it is just viewed as just another nissan despite of its performance. For some reason the GTR's racer image got transferred to west, but not the Z
