We pit Lexus' first-ever supercar -- the $400,000 Lexus LFA -- against our long-term Nissan GT-R to find out which one is the king of the JDMs. Read the full story here: www.motortrend.... Shot by: Jim Gleason Edited by: Jim Gleason
Who’s here in 2020? Been 10 years! Who feels old?😂 Edit: Also 11 years. Time flies, 3 years since I last posted this comment, thanks for the likes everybody!
These kids don't know anything. Sometimes i feel like i'm reading comments from a 17-22 yr old me. The LFA is a masterpiece. Everyone i know who bought a GTR loved it and then sold it. No one's selling an LFA unless as an investment.
+lin2k4 A better question is "Why did they not use the GTR's launch control?". PS this race is literally a lie. The 2010 GTR goes the 1/4 mile in 11.6s and the LFA goes the 1/4 mile in 11.7s. They most likely turned off the launch control in the GTR to have it win.
I don't care which one is fater. That LFA is pure beauty and engineering perfection!!! And, god, that V10 sound is so good! Why does everything needs to have insane 1/4 mile time?
Black beast E550 Yes it gives u information about the acceleration from a stand. But why do u care about that? Driving a sporty car should be about fun
@@nikomoin7604 ok if is not fast is not fun am not saying other things are not important like handling brakes ect but let's be honest you can have a car that handle perfect brake perfect nice looking and everything but if is not fast is not fun...
Black beast E550 that’s bullshit. A Miata is more fun than an automatic mustang. It doesn’t matter if ur 0-60 time is 0,5 sec faster. What makes a car fun is the feeling it gives you
Current GTR Premium will wipe the floor with it, the 1/4 mile times for both the LFA and LC500 is sad. Even so Gtr has track edition and Nismo. I owned many Lexus in the past, they are great looking cars but very slow compared to the same class.
My two favorite JDM “supercars”. The simplicity of an NA FR verses the engineering genius of a grip-greedy Turbo AWD. Wonderful matchup for both competitors, and I’m shocked how close it was
+James Steve that's not true, you cant change the sound just by adding an exhaust, you need a different crankshaft to tweak the sound of an engine, also any v6 or inline 4 will sound like a v10 you need a v10 or an inline 5 to do that
FartParticles That's like people paying $200 dollars on a designer belt. "Oh its made with genuine high quality leather." I could go to any other store and buy a $5 belt made from polyester and it still would do the same thing as the $200. Trying to justify it saying it's got a bunch of Vella and whistles doesn't change the fact the fact that you can spend considerably less and get the same job done. Jo
***** don't get me wrong I think both are amazing beautiful pieces of work. I just saying that it's weird that a very limited expensive car that's full of the latest most inivative tech is barely faster (in a drag race) than a mass produced car. For me it's just that the GTR kinda breaks common sense. It's the practicality and the whole "bang for your buck" thing.
There are obvious reasons why the LFA costs so much more. It looks better, has a nicer interior, and it's damn reliable. It's like comparing a mustang gt to an ISF.
Trent Mclellan I love GTR but if you knew anything about it, you'd know that 2.7 seconds 0-60 can only be done a few times before the tranny breaks. You can't be using launch control in every race. I doubt that they used launch control in this race, which explains the 3.5 seconds. LFA looks, sounds, and in just about every way is better than GTR. It doesn't even compete with GTR. It's way out of GTR's league. It's not over priced. Any super car that has limited production will cost that much.
Rizwan Javed the GTR tranny doesn't break, after a certain point launch control will be disabled until it cools down requires a quick lap. This is not 2009 Lol
2010 GTR vs a 2012 LFA? Seriously? They couldn't go out and "rent" a 2012 GTR or borrow a 2012? Put of two of the same year models head to head and you'd see a diff result.
Cody Bowser They do some sort of drag racing/car show event near my house at the Floyd Bennett Airfield every few months so I see a lot of supercars and rare classics driving by my neighborhood. I've seen the Ferrari Enzo, Aventador, Porsche Carrera GT, R8 GT, a ton of GTR's, and a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder (rarest car I've ever seen but could have been a replica) just to name a few. I have yet to see an LFA. That alone shows you why the car is worth what it is.
Goosebumps I always think the world is coming to end when I hear the LFAs motorsound. It is still the unbeatable motorsound of the automotive world I‘ve ever heard
for everyone saying they'd rather buy x or y , you can but you can't buy the LFA because it's limited to 500 (170 in the US) and even a hardcore GTR fan has loads of respect for the LFA. it's 400k for a reason and very special to every automotive fan as one of the few cars that engineers built and not the board members!
people say a gtr is faster and cheaper yeah yeah, but the LFA is about the driving experience, they used a single plate clutch just to get a more mechanical feel, if I was to own any car I would own an LFA
I'm with you on this.. They could have also used the Lexus RC500. Lighten the cars weight up. Use a retro version of MK4 dash. Make a manual trans version.
@@ethanjensen1273 The car would have cost 80k. The LFA was a Super car. And they were selling for $250k. But the technology was their for Toyota to use some of it for a true Toyota Built Supra.
@@ethanjensen1273 I also just read a story that if Toyota didn't get the deal done with BMW. They would have built The Supra themselves in 2 more years. I would have rather waited then see this Wet the Bed car. Much rather see a Supra built by Toyota. Same story days they want to bring back the MR2. Who are they going to team up with now. VW They have rear engine technology too. Lol
I love me a GT-R, but nobody can argue the fact that the LFA sounds better and more aggressive than any stock car on the market (tunes and after-market exhausts excluded)
Considering the LFA is just one model, what model of gtr did they use cus there is many? There is two thing the LFA will always beat the GTR in, quality and the magnificent sound of that v10.
Just think about the GTR with a 3.8Ltr V6 competing with a 4 ltr V10...Its mind-blowing how that mighty R35 still manages to keep up with the LFA... Absolutely staggering 🙌🏻 Both a Masterpiece 🇯🇵❤️
Cool cars. But some things that I don't like about the gtr is how it looks. It does not look like a sports car and looks like a tank. And the other thing is how quiet it is compared to other supercars. But overall they are impressive cars.
I honestly hold both of these examples in the highest echelon of car making and to us car enthusiasts as the best in their segments, one for collecting(LFA kept new is fetching a million plus) and one for daily driving as I still see 1st gen on road, both are supreme.
The GT-R is a great and awesome car, however don't be sad about it. Porsche is just great German quality and looks great. If I had the money, it would be a really tough choice. But might actually pick the Porsche, for being a Porsche. But hey, i'm 18 lol
LFA is exclusive and will appreciate in price. So it's an investment. A GTR depreciates. The argument is literally like this. Should I get the bigger steak aka Nissan GTR. Or the more expensive better tasting but smaller steak aka LFA. A rich person doesn't care about a GTR because everyone has one. Especially in California. Why not be different and get something special ? Every journalist knows the LFA is spectacular. Every keyboard warrior needs to realize you can't compare the two cars. They weren't made to compete with each other.
The lfa is more so a masterpiece of how well developed Japanese motors has come! It was truly to show the word how technologically advanced a car can be, and that just so happens to come with a price !
Lexus LFA is actually asset not a liability. It will continue to rise in price over time if the owner take care of it. Same with the GTR but not nearly as much. So I’m picking the LFA if I have the choice.
Romel Leon And what would the point be in having it say "2.7" on the brochure instead of "3.2"? Unless you are throwing it on the track, which you wont, it might as well be a Prius. If you want a fancy car to fish up some gold digger to f**k, then they dont really care about 2.7 or 3.2 either but only how many Fanklins you got in your wallet. There are many *meaningful* ways the cars can be compared, but a drag race is not one of them. There are rotten civics with a couple hundred bucks worth of 2nd hand mods that run a 1/4 mile faster than either of these. Does that make them better cars? Surely not.
DDSloan96LP Listen, I'm tired of you butthurt gtr fagboys saying the car that beat the gtr is more expensive, a 50k$ Evo would beat the gtr and that's half the price, you don't just pay a supercars price for it's speed, you get much more than that in other supercars.
halabi97 did you really just say that wow you know nothing about cars the gtr was built for lap times circuit not for a straight line and my ass a evo even with 2 step would not beat a gtr its a fact if you claim its faster its like saying the evo is faster then a ferrari 458 italia thats just stupied and i would know about evo's since my friend has a evo 9 fully built egine pushing 560 hp to the wheel and he has beaten a gtr along with a r8 you can not beat a gtr stock on stock plane and simple also stop playing video games and read up on stuff before you start giving people false information
TheTaintedBeast An oval cicuit lap. Dont get that confused with a road track. There are a bunch of cars with less hp that can lay waste to a GTR on a road course.
halabi97 NO. NO. NO. At no point in time will any Evo be able to beat a gtr. And what the hell kind of damn Evo costs 50k?? Last time I checked they were around 35ish. The amount of money required to make a evo take out a gtr would cost more than just buying a gtr. So shut the fuck up and actually do some research before you start talking out your ass again.
94XJ wtf are you saying, all gt-r's are v6 twin turbo, and AWD. Do you know the amount of money and work they would have to do to convert that awd to rwd? You would have to disconnect alot of things, and do alot of welding. Nobody would ever do this, unless the gtr was meant for drifting. But that's just stupid because a r35 isnt meant for drifting. Maybe if you have the money. The engine in the r35 is worth more than your corolla ok? no ones going to take that out and put a fucking v8 in there with 400 horses. The r35 has 545 -600 horses.. stock, why would anyone downgrade. you have no clue what you are taking about
1/4 mile times aren't the deal breaker for any car let alone a Supercar. The technology, design and engineering that went onto the LFA is far superior to the Nissan. The GT-R is not a super car for those reasons, not it's speed capabilities. I would love to own a GT-R but if I had the money to spend upwards of $400k on a car, I would choose the LFA even it it was slower than the GT-R. Pretty sure you can make any Mustang or Camaro a better 1/4 mile and 0-60 car if you wanted to spend enough but it still won't be a Supercar or anywhere near as cool as an LFA, Ford GT, NSX, or top end Aston Martin and those who think so are just trying to justify thriftyness and value for the sake of simple speed. Ever been in a GT-R? It feels plasticity and cheap like a typical Nissan. It's fast, but that's about all it is really. Even if the LFA didn't move, it would still be worth more than a GT-R. Nothing about a true Supercar is value oriented. Shit, the sound of the LFA alone is worth $100k to anyone who's qualified financially to afford it.
Great cars, but I'd definitely go with the LFA. If I have enough money to buy one of those cars, money isn't an object. I like the exclusivity of the LFA. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVEEEEEEEEEEEE a GT-R, but as a Toyota fan, my heart belongs with the LFA. They are both great cars!!!
museapex The MK3 was very luxurious for it's time, and was the top class car of Toyota. MK4 sacrificed interior luxury for a very well equiped 2JZ. The MK3 is an absolute tank of a car, it lasts forever and is remarkably well built. The 7MGE with adjusted timing or the 1JZ variants last forever. Lots of owners have clocked 300k miles on those and are still running good. An underrated car that will cost more of a fortune when it becomes even older. But I get what you're saying, the LFA is in direct competition with the higher ups of European car-engineering and the Supra line, quality wise, never got as close as the LFA is now. When I glance at this LFA I get Supra vibrations all over the place and am sure most Mk4 fans agree. Call it a spiritual successor. Remember the MK3 exists as a Supra too! I am so defensive of this car because it's my favorite hehe, those hidden headlamps phiet phew. All in all, the Japanese are almost always ahead and the LFA proves it once more.
I remember seeing this video when it came out thinking to myself would I ever be able to afford a GTR. Well couple months ago I just got one. Never say never.
In acceleration and speed yes. The LFA's all round driving experience, you really do get your moneys worth, its control and driving atmosphere are just extra ordinary. You don't have to be even told twice about the sound that engine makes, pure music. The interior isn't marvellous but it is fime tuned and well finished, to be expected although not asss classy as some would like. Steering and cornering phenomenal as you'd expect from a Japanese car, very much like the gtrs steering just more precise I'd say. May not feel as raw and untamed as the gtr might sometimes feel, but for me, it hits at just close to perfect.
this is the exact gtr with supersiver i had in 2009 May 19th. Cannot believe I still watch back this video again. No more sport car now, father with 2 kids.
+Whun Chun why? the performance specs havent been drasticly changed in those two years. But yeah. The LFA is in a completly different pricerange. If Nissan would produce something in the pricerange of the LFA on the other hand..... oh jolly!
watched this video 12 years ago when i was a little boy and the nissan gtr was my fav car at the time. didn’t like that it lost to a lexus. i didn’t like the lfa back then. now it’s my new dream car , tht sound is something to be desired everyday.
Notorious HZ Not even close to $300,000 better. The reality is the LFA is a low volume selling car and they're passing on development costs to the customers.
